Trevor Story Could Make His Big-League Return on Friday

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (abdomen) said he could be active "as early as Friday," per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. Cotillo reports that the team's plan for Story is to have him rehab at Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday and Wednesday before being re-evaluated. Story has been on the injured list since mid-May after undergoing sports hernia surgery, but he appears to be on the doorstep of a return to Boston. The 33-year-old got off to a terrible start to the 2026 season before getting injured, hitting .206 with three home runs and a 32.4% strikeout rate across his first 176 plate appearances of the year. Still, Story hit 25 home runs and stole 31 bases across 654 plate appearances in 2025 and remains a very valuable fantasy player when healthy and going well. Once Story returns, he should be rostered across most fantasy formats.

Red Sox Promoting Outfield Prospect Justin Gonzales to Double-A

The Boston Red Sox are promoting outfield prospect Justin Gonzales to Double-A Portland, an MLB source told Ari Alexander of 7 News. Gonzales gets the call to Portland after hitting .271 with 17 home runs, 58 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and 68 runs scored in 89 games across 350 at-bats at High-A Greenville this year. The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder is ranked as Boston's No. 2 prospect at MLB Pipeline, behind only shortstop prospect Franklin Arias. The 19-year-old Dominican bats from the right side of the plate and has some of the most raw power out of any of the team's position-player prospects. Gonzales generates tons of bat speed, which in turn lights up his exit velocities, and he's not hitting as many ground balls in 2026. He projects for 30-plus home runs at the major-league level and is extremely athletic and agile despite his hulking size. Gonzales has average speed and will most likely settle into a corner-outfield spot or at first base long-term. At just 19 years of age, nobody should be expecting Gonzales to make his big-league debut in Boston next year.

Roman Anthony to Begin Rehab Assignment on Tuesday

Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony (finger) is set to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Tuesday, according to Sean McAdam of MassLive.com. It appears that Anthony is finally making progress with his finger injury that has kept him sidelined since early May. He has been rehabbing a partially torn tendon in his finger, but appears ready for game action. Given he hasn't played in months, Anthony will likely require a lengthy rehab assignment. He should return by the end of the month, but will likely require at least a week of rehab games. Fantasy managers should check back for an update on his status over the next week.

Roman Anthony Making Significant Progress, Rehab Assignment Coming

Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony (finger) is making significant progress with his hitting program in Fort Myers, Fla., and is closing in on a minor-league rehab assignment, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. Interim manager Chad Tracy said Anthony won't go on a rehab assignment this weekend, but it could happen next week. The former top outfield prospect last played on May 4, when he suffered a partially torn tendon in the joint that connects to his right ring finger. He improved to the point where he could reinitiate a hitting program a couple of weeks ago, and he's been doing all other baseball drills such as running and fielding. Anthony has hit off the Trajekt machine recently, and "everything's going well so far," Tracy said. If the 22-year-old starts a rehab assignment early next week, he could be back with the BoSox by next weekend. Having Anthony's power/speed threat would be huge for Boston as they attempt to get into the playoffs down the stretch. Although he was hitting just .229 (25-for-109) with one homer before his injury, Anthony is one of the better young power/speed outfield threats in baseball and is absolutely worth stashing now if he's floating around on your league's waiver wire.

Willson Contreras Remains in Red Sox's Lineup on Wednesday

Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras (hamstring) has been battling a hamstring issue of late, but he's starting at first base and is batting cleanup for Boston against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays and right-hander Jose Soriano at the Rogers Centre on Wednesday, per MLB.com. The 34-year-old four-time All-Star has been one of the team's best offensive producers in 2026 in what has been a career year, as he's currently slashing .280/.389/.523 with a .912 OPS, 23 home runs, 70 RBI, 58 runs scored, and three stolen bases across 375 at-bats. However, the Venezuelan former catcher has struggled at the plate recently, and it might have something to do with his hamstring. After going 0-for-4 on Tuesday night, Contreras has gone just 4-for-24 (.167) with no extra-base hits in seven games so far in the month of August. He will look to start to turn things around on Wednesday against a pitcher that he has never faced.

Willson Contreras Playing Through Sore Hamstring

Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras (hamstring) hasn't looked right lately and was seen grabbing at his hamstring after flying out in his first plate appearance on Tuesday against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays, although he stayed in the game, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Contreras has been one of the team's most consistent hitters all season long, but he has just one home run in an 18-game stretch, dating back to July 20, after going 0-for-4 with a strikeout on Tuesday night. Fantasy managers will want to check in on Contreras to see if he's active for Wednesday's contest in Toronto against right-hander Jose Soriano. The 34-year-old Venezuelan veteran and former catcher has a .280/.389/.523 slash line and a career-best .912 OPS with 23 home runs, 70 RBI, 58 runs scored, and three stolen bases in 109 games and 447 plate appearances in his first year in Beantown. Since July 25, Contreras has gone 7-for-40 (.175) with a homer, four RBI, six runs scored, 10 walks, and 17 strikeouts in 14 games. It's possible that his offensive production has suffered of late while playing at less than 100%.

Roman Anthony Nearing a Rehab Assignment

According to Tim Healy, Boston Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said outfielder Roman Anthony (finger) is getting closer to a minor-league rehab assignment. Anthony is hitting off a high-tech pitching machine, which is normally the last step before facing live pitching. He has been hitting in the batting cage and seems extremely close to getting back into game action. Anthony has been out since early May due to a partially torn tendon in his right ring finger. Barring any setbacks, Anthony has a chance to return to the Red Sox lineup by late August or early September.

Adley Rutschman Expected to be Activated on Tuesday

Boston Red Sox catcher Adley Rutschman (wrist) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, according to Chris Cotillo. It looks like Rutschman is nearing his highly-anticipated team debut after being acquired in a blockbuster move at the trade deadline. The 28-year-old figures to get the bulk of the playing time behind the plate, which means reduced roles for Connor Wong and Jake Rogers. Rutschman has been out since July 20 due to wrist inflammation, but is finally nearing his return. Fantasy managers looking for help at the catcher spot should check the waiver wire to see if Rutschman is available.

Kristian Campbell Heating Up at Triple-A, Could be Nearing a Return to Boston

Boston Red Sox second baseman/outfielder Kristian Campbell has been heating up at Triple-A Worcester and could be on the verge of returning to the big-league roster for the first time since his rookie season in 2025. Campbell, a fourth-rounder in 2023 from the Georgia Institute of Technology, hit .223/.319/.345 with a .664 OPS, six homers, 21 RBI, 24 runs scored, and two stolen bases in 67 games as a rookie last year after being signed to an eight-year, $60 million extension last April. The 24-year-old struggled in spring training this year, though, and has spent the entire 2026 season at Worcester, where he has hit .250/.377/.351 with a .728 OPS, five home runs, 38 RBI, five stolen bases, and 39 runs scored in 90 games across 384 plate appearances. After recording three hits for the WooSox on Sunday, Campbell is batting .269 (7-for-26) with a homer and five RBI in seven games so far in August. With eligibility at second base and the outfield, Campbell is a stash candidate in deeper fantasy baseball leagues ahead of his potential return to the big leagues for the last month and a half of the regular season.

Adley Rutschman Traveling With Boston, Won't Return on Monday

Boston Red Sox catcher Adley Rutschman (wrist) will travel with his new team to Toronto for a series against the division-rival Blue Jays, according to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. However, he will not be activated from the 10-day injured list on Monday. Rutschman will run through a series of workouts with the team, and the club will assess the next steps from there. The 28-year-old switch-hitting backstop has yet to debut with his new team after the BoSox acquired him in a blockbuster trade last Monday from the Baltimore Orioles, but he's nearing a return from the IL. He started a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Saturday and has gone 1-for-5 at the plate with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored in his two games. Depending on how his workout goes on Monday, Rutschman could make his debut as Boston's primary catcher as early as Tuesday at the Rogers Centre. Rutschman has been battling injuries the last two years and only has eight home runs with a .251 average (62-for-247) in 2026, but he will be a massive upgrade at the catching position in Boston and could finish out the year strong for fantasy managers if he's completely healthy. He's rostered in just over 70% of Yahoo leagues.

Wilyer Abreu  • RF  •  Red Sox

Wilyer Abreu Returns to the Lineup on Sunday

Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (calf) is serving as the designated hitter and is batting third for the Red Sox in Sunday's series finale against the visiting Athletics and right-hander J.T. Ginn at Fenway Park, per MLB.com. Abreu got a much-needed day off in Saturday's loss to the A's after he was dealing with swelling in his calf and shin following Friday night's game. He'll get a day off his feet as the DH in his return to action on Sunday against a pitcher he has yet to face in the big leagues. Fantasy managers will want to get the Venezuelan outfielder back in their starting lineups in traditional leagues with Abreu hitting .409 (9-for-22) with a 1.500 OPS, four home runs, a double, nine RBI, nine runs scored, and a stolen base so far in six games in August. The 27-year-old left-handed hitter is returning to a .256/.331/.462 slash line with a .793 OPS, 20 home runs, 62 RBI, 64 runs, and seven stolen bases across his 433 at-bats in 2026 in his fourth year in the league with the Red Sox.

Wilyer Abreu Out on Saturday With Calf/Shin Swelling

Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu's calf/shin is swollen from Friday night, so interim manager Chad Tracy said it felt like a good time to give Abreu a day off on Saturday against the Athletics, according to Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald. The Red Sox had been looking for the right time to give the outfielder a day off during the team's 16-game stretch without a day off. Eli White is making the start in right field on Saturday and will hit sixth against A's rookie left-hander Gage Jump. Fantasy managers should consider Abreu day-to-day for now with an injury that shouldn't send him to the injured list. Check back on Sunday to see if he's ready to return for the series finale at Fenway Park. Abreu is having another fine season for the BoSox in 2026, slashing .256/.331/.462 with a .793 OPS, 20 home runs, 62 RBI, 64 runs scored, and seven stolen bases in 113 games across 492 plate appearances. He's three homers shy of setting a new career high. After slumping to a .186 average (18-for-97) with six homers and 14 RBI in 25 games in July, Abreu has gone 9-for-22 (.409) with four homers and nine RBI so far in six games in August. UPDATE: Tracy said that Abreu is feeling better and is "hopeful" to return to the lineup on Sunday.

Willson Contreras Back in the Lineup Saturday

Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras (illness) is back in the lineup and batting fourth on Saturday after missing the last two games. The 34-year-old left Wednesday's game early with dizziness and a high temperature, but now, three days later, he is back in the starting lineup and batting fourth for the surging Red Sox. The 11-year veteran is having a career-best season, already hitting 23 home runs, which is one shy of his career-best total of 24 in 2019. He is looking to continue his personal-best hot streak while helping the team keep its winning streak alive and is a must-start in all formats when healthy.

Adley Rutschman to Begin a Rehab Assignment on Saturday

Boston Red Sox catcher Adley Rutschman (wrist) will start a minor-league rehab assignment on Saturday, according to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. Rutschman has been on the 10-day injured list since July 20 due to inflammation in his wrist, but now that he's on the verge of a rehab assignment, the 28-year-old switch-hitting backstop could be in line to make his debut with Boston at some point next week, barring a setback. Once he's back in the big leagues, the former first overall pick from Oregon State University will be the Red Sox's starting catcher as they look to stay hot and earn a berth in the playoffs. Boston gave up quite the prospect haul to acquire Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, so they are banking on him returning to the form he had in Baltimore in his first couple of years in the majors. Rutschman has been an injury disappointment the last two seasons, and he has hit .251/.331/.433 with a .764 OPS, eight home runs, 47 RBI, and 30 runs scored in 67 games and 284 plate appearances in 2026. He's rostered in 70% of Yahoo leagues after fading since the start of the 2025 season.

Payton Tolle  • SP  •  Red Sox

Payton Tolle Dominant Against A's, Strikes Out 14 Batters

Boston Red Sox left-hander Payton Tolle was absolutely dominant in Friday night's 13-1 beatdown of the Athletics at Fenway Park and flirted with a perfect game early on. Tolle allowed just one earned run on two hits (one homer) while walking none and fanning a career-high 14 batters in six innings of work to pick up his seventh win of the season and lower his ERA to 3.20. Tolle's perfect-game bid was ended in the fifth inning when he allowed a solo home run to Tyler Soderstrom, but that was all the 23-year-old southpaw would allow. He had his swing-and-miss stuff going, as he generated 24 swings and misses on just 84 pitches. It was Tolle's second straight quality start. Tolle will face the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays for the third time this year in his next scheduled outing. It will be a challenge for him to earn a third straight quality start, as he's allowed seven runs (five earned) with a walk and seven strikeouts in 11 innings against the Rays in his previous two starts against them in 2025. After Friday's strong start, Tolle has a nice 3.20 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP in his 107 innings pitched over 19 starts in his first full year in the majors.

Willson Contreras Still Under the Weather on Friday

Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras (illness) is missing a second straight game on Friday in the series opener against the Athletics at Fenway Park due to an illness, per MLB.com. Nick Sogard will make another start at first base for the BoSox while batting leadoff on Friday against A's right-hander Jack Perkins. Contreras was pulled from Wednesday's contest early due to an illness and hasn't played since, but he should be back at some point for the series this weekend against the A's. When the 34-year-old Venezuelan returns, he'll need to be reinserted into all fantasy lineups in traditional formats as one of Boston's best all-around hitters in 2026 in his first year with the team. Contreras is currently batting a steady .288/.395/.540 with a .936 OPS, 23 home runs, 70 RBI, 57 runs scored, and three stolen bases in his 361 at-bats in 2026. Since the beginning of July, Contreras has hit .319 (23-for-72) with a 1.056 OPS, five homers, four doubles, 17 RBI, 16 runs, and a stolen base in 23 games.

Adley Rutschman Hits in the Cages on Thursday

Boston Red Sox catcher Adley Rutschman (wrist) hit in the indoor cage aggressively on Thursday after throwing to the bases on the field, according to MLB.com. Rutschman has been on the 10-day injured list since July 20 with inflammation in his left wrist. The 28-year-old switch-hitting backstop is making progress, although he will still likely need a minor-league rehab assignment before making his Red Sox debut, which probably won't come until around mid-August, barring a setback. The Red Sox sent a big package of prospects to the Baltimore Orioles for Rutschman at the trade deadline on Monday, giving them a major upgrade at catcher whenever he's fully recovered from his wrist injury. Rutschman has battled injuries since last year and is hitting .251/.331/.433 with a .764 OPS, eight home runs, 47 RBI, and 30 runs scored in 67 games across 284 plate appearances this year. The BoSox are hoping the three-time All-Star can return to his pre-injury form and help the team get into the postseason. He has just 17 homers in the last two seasons combined after hitting 52 long balls in his first three years in the league with the O's.

Garrett Crochet  • SP  •  Red Sox

Garrett Crochet Unlikely to be Stretched Out by End of September

Boston Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said that left-hander Garrett Crochet (shoulder, lat) stretching out to six innings by the end of September is "probably not feasible," according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. "If he's healthy and right, and he looks like Garrett Crochet, I think we'd be foolish not to consider that," Tracy said when asked if Crochet could be used as a reliever. The Red Sox plan on getting the 27-year-old two-time All-Star back before the end of the regular season, but it could come as a reliever instead of a starter, which is bad news for fantasy managers who have been stashing him in single-year formats. After finishing second in the American League Cy Young voting in 2025 in his first year in Boston, Crochet has made only six starts in 2026 and allowed 23 runs (21 earned) while walking 11 and striking out 37 in 30 innings pitched. Even if Crochet makes it back as a starter in the final month of the regular season, he won't have much time to help fantasy managers, and he'll have an extremely limited ceiling if he's not stretched all the way out.

Willson Contreras Still Out Sick on Thursday

Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras (illness) remains out sick for Thursday's series finale at Fenway Park against the visiting Chicago White Sox, per MLB.com. Nick Sogard will make the start at first base for the BoSox and will hit leadoff against White Sox right-hander Luis Castillo. Contreras was feeling under the weather on Wednesday and left the contest early, and now he'll take a seat the following day as he tries to rest up. Fantasy managers will want to check back on Friday to see if the right-handed slugger is feeling good enough to return for the series opener at home against the visiting Athletics. The 34-year-old Venezuelan veteran has been a must-start in all fantasy formats in 2026 in his best season as a pro in his first year in Boston. The four-time All-Star and 11-year veteran is currently slashing .288/.395/.540 with a .936 OPS, 23 home runs, 70 RBI, 57 runs scored, and three stolen bases across 105 games and 430 plate appearances. Contreras had one of his best months in July, hitting .323 (20-for-62) with a 1.117 OPS, five homers, four doubles, 14 RBI, 14 runs, and a stolen base in 20 games played.

Triston Casas  • 1B  •  Red Sox

Triston Casas Undergoes Successful Wrist Surgery

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (wrist) underwent successful surgery on his left wrist on Thursday, according to Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. This most recent wrist issue is the latest in a string of injury setbacks for Casas. He ruptured the patellar tendon in his left knee in May 2025, resulting in season-ending surgery. Casas also suffered an intercostal strain while working his way back from the knee injury earlier this year and is now set to be sidelined for a significant stretch while he recovers from wrist surgery. All in all, the 26-year-old has logged just 355 MLB plate appearances since the start of the 2024 season. He was productive in a 63-game sample size in 2024, hitting .241 with 13 home runs and a 13.3% barrel rate. Still, his extensive injury history makes his future fantasy value difficult to project.
