Willson Contreras to Take Part in Home Run Derby

Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras will take part in the Home Run Derby on Monday, July 13, during next week's All-Star break, becoming the first Red Sox player to participate in the event in 15 years, since Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz participated in the event in 2011 in Phoenix. In his first year in Boston, the three-time All-Star is in the midst of a career season, slashing .287/.381/.545 with a career-best .926 OPS, 20 home runs, 16 doubles, 61 RBI, 46 runs scored, and two stolen bases in 87 games played and 362 plate appearances. Contreras' 20 home runs in the first half match his home run total from a year ago in 2025 in 135 games played in his final season with the St. Louis Cardinals. He's easily on pace to shatter his career high in the category of 24, which was set in 2019 with the Chicago Cubs in his fourth year in the league. The former catcher won't be one of the favorites in this year's Home Run Derby as a first-time participant.

Sonny Gray  • SP  •  Red Sox

Sonny Gray Unlikely to be Dealt at Trade Deadline

There are complications in Boston Red Sox right-hander Sonny Gray's contract that make it unlikely he'll be dealt at this year's trade deadline, according to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan. For one, Gray has a no-trade clause. Secondly, on top of the $10 million he'd be owed in salary for the final two months of the season, his restructured contract after his trade from the St. Louis Cardinals includes a $10 million buyout on a $30 million mutual option for 2027. It makes Gray a pretty pricey deadline pitching acquisition, which makes it unlikely that he's dealt unless Boston is willing to pay down a significant portion and convince Gray to accept a deal. Despite below-average velocity, the 36-year-old veteran continues to find ways to get hitters out with his cutter-shaped fastball as his primary weapon. His deep arsenal has allowed him to have a fantastic first year in Boston in 2026, going 10-1 with a 2.61 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 82 strikeouts in 89 2/3 innings over his 16 starts. If Gray were to be traded, his best fits would be with the Braves, Padres, Cubs, Brewers, or White Sox.

Anthony Seigler  • 2B  •  Red Sox

Anthony Seigler Emerging as a High-Floor Waiver-Wire Target

Since being promoted to the big leagues in early June, Boston Red Sox infielder Anthony Seigler is hitting .298/.375/.456 with one home run, three RBI, 10 runs scored, and two stolen bases. The 27-year-old has emerged as Boston's near-everyday second baseman and leadoff hitter in recent games. Seigler may not carry much power upside for fantasy managers, as he owns a 2.2% barrel rate across 137 career MLB plate appearances. Still, he logged a 16.4% walk rate across 159 Triple-A plate appearances before his promotion this season and a 16.9% walk rate across 307 Triple-A plate appearances in 2025. Seigler also stole 23 bases across 72 minor league games last season, so he carries some speed upside to go along with his stable batting average and on-base production. In deeper league formats, Seigler could be a worthy waiver wire target for fantasy managers.

Red Sox Hopeful That Ranger Suarez Can Avoid the Injured List

The Boston Red Sox are hopeful that left-hander Ranger Suarez (groin) can avoid landing on the injured list, and they'll see how he's feeling on Tuesday, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Tightness in his left groin caused Suarez to be pulled in the third inning of his start on Sunday in the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels, which puts his next scheduled start in the air for this Saturday against the New York Mets. With the All-Star break coming next week, fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised if Boston plays it safe and skips Suarez's turn in the rotation to close out the first half of the season. The 30-year-old Venezuelan southpaw has been very solid in his first year in Beantown in 2026, going 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA (2.62 FIP) and 1.16 WHIP with 97 strikeouts and 27 walks in 91 1/3 innings across his 17 starts. Suarez has a career-high 25.8% strikeout rate and a solid 6.9% walk rate. If he's cleared to pitch this weekend, he'll be a no-brainer must-start against the last-place Mets.

Garrett Whitlock  • RP  •  Red Sox

Garrett Whitlock a Top Reliever Stash to Target on the Waiver Wire

Across 29 innings (30 games) so far in 2026, Boston Red Sox right-hander Garrett Whitlock has recorded a 4-1 record with a 2.48 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 34 strikeouts, and one save. To this point, Boston has largely utilized Whitlock in a setup role in front of veteran closer Aroldis Chapman. However, Chapman has allowed six earned runs over his last seven appearances (six innings), which could open the door for Whitlock to see more save opportunities. Boston could also look to move Chapman at the upcoming trade deadline. Even if Whitlock remains limited to his current role, he could carry some value in deeper fantasy leagues. The 30-year-old owns a sterling 24.6% K-BB rate, and his frequent high-leverage usage puts him in position to rack up more wins than the typical reliever. Fantasy managers looking for relief upside on the waiver wire may want to prioritize Whitlock.

Jake Bennett  • SP  •  Red Sox

Jake Bennett Can be a Big Boost to Your Rotation Off the Waiver Wire

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jake Bennett has been one of the few bright spots in his team's season this year, and he can be a nice boost for your fantasy team if you need help from the waiver wire. The Red Sox acquired the towering 25-year-old lefty from the Nationals in exchange for Luis Perales this offseason, and Bennett got off to a fast start by posting a 1.60 ERA in his nine starts in Triple-A. He made a couple of starts for the Red Sox in May but has solidified his spot in the rotation with an excellent run over his last four starts. He has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last four outings, posting a 1.78 ERA and 2.68 FIP with 23 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings. He dominated the Yankees and Angels to win his last two starts, and he'll be back on the bump this Wednesday against the White Sox for one more start before the All-Star break. While he doesn't have the high strikeout ceiling of some of the flashier prospects, Bennett has been effective enough to be a strong streaming option in all formats and potentially a long-term solution, especially if the Red Sox move starting pitchers at the deadline, opening more opportunities for him down the stretch.

Trevor Story  • SS  •  Red Sox

Trevor Story Participating in All Baseball Activities

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (abdomen) is participating in all baseball activities, but not quite at full speed, according to MLB.com. The general timetable for his recovery from sports-hernia surgery (on May 21) is eight to 12 weeks, but Story thinks he'll be closer to eight. The Red Sox put Story on the 15-day injured list on May 16 after having surgery, and he was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 4. Even if he continues to progress in his recovery from hernia surgery, the 33-year-old veteran and two-time All-Star won't return before the All-Star break from July 13-16, and he might not be reinstated until August, depending on when he's cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment. Before his injury, Story was struggling with a .206/.244/.303 slash line with only three home runs, 19 RBI, 16 runs scored, and four steals in 165 at-bats. He turned back the clock in 2025 with 25 homers, 96 RBI, and 31 steals in 157 regular-season games, but Story's lengthy injury history has caught up with him again in his 11th year in the big leagues. Story is currently rostered in 38% of Yahoo leagues.

Roman Anthony Set to Visit With Hand Specialist

Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony (fingers) is set to visit with Dr. Gary Lourie, who is a hand specialist, in the coming week, according to The Boston Globe's Tim Healey. Interim manager Chad Tracy said on Sunday that Anthony's scheduled visit with a hand specialist is "for peace of mind" and to get Anthony to "a spot where he can focus each day on just pounding away at getting that hand healthy." The former top prospect has been out for nine weeks with a partially torn ligament in his right ring finger. He has yet to resume swinging a bat and doesn't have a timetable for a return. The 22-year-old former second-round selection in 2022 is quickly developing an injury-prone label after finishing his rookie season on the injured list last year. Anthony has played in just 30 games in 2026 and has hit .229 (25-for-109) with a homer, five RBI, 12 runs, and two steals in 130 plate appearances. His power/speed upside makes him a hold in all fantasy leagues, but at this point, it seems unlikely that Anthony will be ready to return from the 60-day injured list until August. He's rostered in 79% of Yahoo leagues.

Ranger Suarez Leaves Sunday's Start Early With Groin Injury

Boston Red Sox left-hander Ranger Suarez (groin) was pulled from his start early on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels in the third inning with left-groin tightness, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. Suarez was seen shaking his leg and grimacing before being pulled. Before getting hurt, Suarez allowed three earned runs on six hits while walking none and striking out five in just 2 2/3 innings pitched. The 30-year-old Venezuelan southpaw is now in danger of missing his final start before the All-Star break, and he probably won't be cleared to pitch in the Midsummer Classic, either. Going into Sunday's series finale against the Halos, Suarez was 4-3 with a 2.94 ERA (2.71 FIP) and 1.13 WHIP with 92 strikeouts and 26 walks in 88 2/3 innings across 16 starts in his first year in Beantown. Suarez should be held until we know more about the severity of his injury. He has a 25.5% strikeout rate, which is the second-highest of his career, and a 7.2% walk rate. Suarez is rostered in 90% of Yahoo leagues. Fantasy managers should prepare for the possibility of him not making another start until late July.

Connelly Early to Have Second Opinion on his Elbow

Boston Red Sox left-hander Connelly Early (elbow) will be getting a second opinion on his elbow after an MRI exam showed that he has posterior elbow inflammation, per MLB.com. It came a day after he left his start early against the Washington Nationals after four scoreless innings pitched on June 30. The Red Sox placed Early on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday, and he won't be eligible to rejoin Boston's starting rotation until after the All-Star break from July 13-16. Barring a more serious diagnosis after a second opinion, the young southpaw could have a chance to jump right back into the rotation to start the beginning of the second half of the season. In his first 17 starts in 2026 in his first full year in the majors, Early went 7-5 with a 3.44 ERA (4.62 FIP) and 1.25 WHIP with 93 strikeouts and 34 walks in 91 2/3 innings. The former fifth-round pick in 2023 out of the University of Virginia could be a sneaky waiver-wire pickup before he returns from the IL for the second half. He's rostered in exactly half of Yahoo leagues after his elbow injury.

Payton Tolle Worth a Waiver Pickup After Recent Short Outing?

Boston Red Sox left-hander Payton Tolle is 4-6 with a 3.39 ERA (3.53 FIP) and 1.12 WHIP with 74 strikeouts and 23 walks in 13 starts across 74 1/3 innings pitched in just his second year in the big leagues in 2026. The 23-year-old southpaw and former second-round pick out of Texas Christian University in 2024 broke a stretch of three straight outings with three earned runs or fewer on Wednesday, when he allowed a season-high six earned runs on seven hits (two homers) while walking three and striking out five in just three innings for his sixth loss of the year. It was the first time since May that Tolle failed to go at least five innings in what was his shortest outing of the season. Despite the poor showing this week, Tolle remains one of the more intriguing young lefty arms in baseball and is still worth a pickup off the waiver wire with an upcoming matchup against the Chicago White Sox, a team that ranks seventh in OPS (.739) but fourth in strikeouts (777). Tolle ranks in the 79th percentile in chase rate and the 62nd percentile in strikeout rate despite giving up plenty of hard contact. He's currently rostered in 60% of Yahoo leagues.

Caleb Durbin  • 3B  •  Red Sox

Will Caleb Durbin's Hot Streak Last?

Boston Red Sox infielder Caleb Durbin has emerged as a waiver-wire target after a hot month of June at the plate. In 25 games and 92 plate appearances during the month, Durbin went 28-for-86 (.326) with six home runs, six doubles, 13 RBI, 16 runs scored, and five stolen bases. The 26-year-old is now hitting .229/.286/.387 with a .674 OPS, seven home runs, 36 RBI, 31 runs scored, and nine stolen bases in 78 games across 278 plate appearances in his first year in Beantown and his second overall in the majors. It was an incredibly hot month of June, but Durbin, who stands at just 5-foot-6 and 183 pounds, isn't your typical third baseman, both in stature and power potential. He hit .256 (114-for-445) with 11 homers, 53 RBI, 18 stolen bases, and 60 runs scored in 136 regular-season games with the Milwaukee Brewers in his rookie campaign last year. Fantasy managers considering Durbin off the waiver wire should be targeting him for his speed and not his recent power surge. He has a weak .234 xBA, .324 xSLG, and .277 xwOBA, suggesting that his power outburst last month isn't sustainable.

Willson Contreras Appealing his Seven-Game Suspension

The Athletic's Evan Drellich reports that Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras is appealing the seven-game suspension that Major League Baseball handed down on Thursday, according to a source. Until the league hears Contreras' appeal, he will be allowed to play, so fantasy managers should expect him to be in the team's starting lineup for Friday's series opener in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels and left-hander Reid Detmers. The league gave Contreras a suspension for his role in a benches-clearing incident last Sunday against the Washington Nationals in the series finale. The 34-year-old veteran Venezuelan has been great for fantasy managers this year in his first season with Boston, as he will take a .283/.377/.529 slash line with 18 homers, 53 RBI, 42 runs scored, and two stolen bases into Friday's game against the Angels. Contreras has been hot of late, too, going 10-for-34 (.294) with two homers, three doubles, nine RBI, six runs, and a stolen base in his last 10 games. Keep him in your starting lineups to start the holiday weekend.

Willson Contreras Suspended Seven Games

Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras has been suspended for seven games for his actions during and following a benches-clearing incident against the Washington Nationals on Sunday, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI. It's unclear if Contreras will appeal the suspension, but if he doesn't, he won't be eligible to return for the BoSox until just before the All-Star break on July 11. Boston has a scheduled day off on Thursday and are set to begin a weekend series on Friday in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels. The 34-year-old former catcher is having a fine first full season in Beantown, hitting .283/.377/.529 with a .906 OPS, 18 home runs, 53 RBI, 42 runs scored, and three stolen bases in 293 at-bats. In his last 10 games, he's gone 10-for-34 (.294) with two homers, three doubles, nine RBI, six runs, and a stolen base in 38 plate appearances. Fantasy managers will need to check back on Friday to see if Contreras is appealing his suspension. If he appeals, he'll be allowed to continue playing until the league makes a decision.

Connelly Early Dealing With Posterior Elbow Inflammation

Boston Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said that left-hander Connelly Early's (elbow) imaging only showed "posterior elbow inflammation in the area that we thought it was... that was kind of the area that he was complaining about last night. So we got some good news there." The Red Sox placed Early on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday after he was forced to leave his start early on Tuesday night after four innings against the visiting Washington Nationals at Fenway Park. The 24-year-old southpaw will be out through the All-Star break, but it sounds like he could be ready to rejoin Boston's starting rotation to begin the second half, barring a setback when he resumes throwing. In 17 starts (91 2/3 innings) in the first half of 2026, Early went 7-5 with a 3.44 ERA (4.61 FIP) and 1.25 WHIP with 93 strikeouts and 34 walks. He was impressive in his MLB debut last year, too, allowing six runs (five earned) while walking four and striking out 29 in just four starts. Fantasy managers looking for rotation help to begin the second half will want to consider adding Early if he's ready to go, and he's only rostered in 54% of Yahoo leagues after his elbow injury.

Jake Bennett a Priority Waiver-Wire Addition With Opportunity to Stick in Rotation

Boston Red Sox rookie left-hander Jake Bennett, who is ranked as the team's No. 6 prospect at MLB Pipeline, has pitched well in his first six major-league starts and should have a long leash in Boston's starting rotation going into the second half of the 2026 season, with both Garrett Crochet (shoulder) and Connelly Early (elbow) on the injured list. In his first 33 innings pitched in the majors, Bennett has posted a 3.27 ERA (3.11 FIP) and 1.06 WHIP with 25 strikeouts and seven walks for a 2-3 record. The 25-year-old could end up being a steal after Boston acquired him in a trade with the Washington Nationals over the offseason. The former second-rounder in 2022 out of the University of Oklahoma has been much sharper in his last three starts, giving up just three earned runs with two walks and 17 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings pitched after he allowed nine earned runs with five walks and eight strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings in his first three big-league starts. With great command of his pitches and an opportunity to stick in Boston's rotation the rest of the year, Bennett is a priority waiver-wire pickup for fantasy managers in need of rotation help. Bennett is currently rostered in under 20% of Yahoo leagues.

Red Sox Place Connelly Early on Injured List With Elbow Inflammation

The Boston Red Sox announced on Wednesday that they placed left-hander Connelly Early (elbow) on the 15-day injured list with left-elbow inflammation and recalled left-hander Alec Gamboa from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Early threw four shutout innings with two walks and five strikeouts on Tuesday night against the visiting Washington Nationals before the BoSox pulled him early with elbow discomfort. The 24-year-old southpaw will now miss at least the next two weeks and won't be able to rejoin the Red Sox's starting rotation until after the All-Star break in late July, in a best-case scenario. Once Early undergoes tests, we'll have a better idea of whether he'll be ready to return from the IL when eligible after the break. In his first full year in the majors, Early has gone 7-5 with a 3.44 ERA (4.61 FIP) and 1.25 WHIP with 93 strikeouts and 34 walks across 91 2/3 innings and 17 starts. He's had a decent 23.8% walk rate and 8.7% walk rate, but he ranks in the 15th percentile in barrel rate and has allowed 15 homers in his 17 starts.

Connelly Early Pulled Early on Tuesday With "Left-Elbow Discomfort"

Boston Red Sox left-hander Connelly Early (elbow) was removed from his start early on Tuesday night against the Washington Nationals in the fifth inning with "left-elbow discomfort," according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Before leaving, Early looked good at Fenway Park, throwing four scoreless innings with three hits allowed, two walks and five strikeouts in a no-decision in the eventual 8-1 loss. It's unclear how serious the 24-year-old southpaw's elbow injury is, but with the All-Star break quickly approaching in mid-July, this might be the last we see of Early until late July. Fantasy managers will want to check back on Wednesday for an update on his condition. In his second year in the majors with Boston in 2026, Early entered his outing on Tuesday with a 7-5 record, 3.59 ERA (4.72 FIP) and 1.25 WHIP with 88 strikeouts and 32 walks in 87 2/3 innings across his 16 starts. His strikeout rate has come down from 36.7% in four starts as a rookie in 2025 to 23.5% this year, but he remains one of the more intriguing young left-handed arms in the game, and he's rostered in 63% of Yahoo leagues. Don't be surprised if Early requires a trip to the IL.

Garrett Whitlock  • RP  •  Red Sox

Garrett Whitlock Earns his First Save of the Season, is he a Top Stash for Saves?

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Garrett Whitlock could be a great source of saves, depending on where all the pieces land at the MLB trade deadline in a few weeks, and he delivered his first save of the season on Monday night in Boston as the Red Sox won their fifth straight game. Whitlock had two strikeouts and gave up one hit while he was filling in the closer role for Aroldis Chapman, who had pitched in three of the last four games, throwing at least 20 pitches in each appearance. Chapman is still an elite closer and will keep the job in Boston if he stays there, but if he's moved at the deadline, Whitlock could become Boston's primary closer. If you're in a deep league and looking to get ahead of the possible reshuffle, Whitlock is a solid stash for saves since he has a 2.60 ERA, 2.85 FIP, and 32 strikeouts in his 27 2/3 innings this season.

Caleb Durbin a Must-Add Off the Waiver Wire as he Continues to Rake?

Boston Red Sox infielder Caleb Durbin has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball recently, and he went 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, a run scored, two stolen bases, and a strikeout in the team's 5-4, 10-inning win at Fenway on Sunday to help Boston complete a four-game sweep over the division-rival New York Yankees. Durbin's overall numbers in 2026 in his second year in the majors (first with the BoSox) don't look very enticing from a fantasy standpoint, as he's hitting just .230/.283/.381 with a .664 OPS, six home runs, 34 RBI, 30 runs scored, and nine stolen bases in 75 games and 267 plate appearances. However, he has become a strong waiver-wire addition in fantasy leagues of late due to his hot streak at the plate, and he's eligible at both second and third base in most leagues. In his last 11 games, Durbin has gone 17-for-39 (.436) with three home runs, eight RBI, and four stolen bases. Durbin had 11 homers and 18 RBI in 136 games in his rookie campaign with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2025, and he's Boston's starting third baseman. He's available in 70% of Yahoo leagues right now.
