Colin Poche News
Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Colin Poche (elbow) completed his rehab in the last couple of months and was cleared to return in the fall instructional league after not pitching in a game since the 2019 playoffs. Poche injured his left elbow during spring workouts leading up to the shortened 2020 season and spent last year rehabbing from his second Tommy John surgery. "It's killing me," Poche said. "It's definitely been a long time, and it's itching at me to get back out there. I missed being able to compete. Obviously, it hurts being delayed right now. I would love to be out there competing." The 28-year-old southpaw had a 4.70 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 72 strikeouts, 19 walks and two saves in 51 2/3 relief innings in his rookie season with Tampa in 2019.
Tampa Bay Rays left-handed reliever Colin Poche (elbow) was put on the 45-day injured list on Tuesday with a torn left ulnar collateral ligament, and he'll miss the 2020 season. Tommy John surgery has been recommended, putting his 2021 season in jeopardy as well. Poche had a 4.08 FIP and struck out 72 hitters in 51 2/3 innings in his 51 appearances out of the bullpen last year. He was projected to be an important piece of Tampa's bullpen once again this year, so his loss is a blow to the relief corps. Lefties hit just .167 off of Poche last year, and righties also hit below .200 against him. If Poche winds up having Tommy John surgery, it will be the second time in his career that he had the procedure, with the first coming when he was in college in 2014. Aaron Loup and Jose Alvarado will be the two lefties the Rays will lean on even more now.
The Tampa Bay Rays have a number of exceedingly interesting pitchers in their minor league system, and on Saturday, they chose to promote one of the more intriguing ones. Colin Poch has been a strikeout machine in the minors the past three-to-four years and last season, he was exceptional across the board at Double-A and Triple-A, going 6-0 with a 0.82 ERA and 0.79 WHIP. This year, however, he's struggled greatly to limit hits and runs with a 6.26 ERA and 1.50 WHIP through 27 1/3 innings. Regardless, his 48 strikeouts during those 27 1/3 innings ensure that there's still some nasty strikeout potential looming. Casey Sadler, meanwhile, has been bouncing up-and-down between the majors and Triple-A all year and he's done a solid job when called upon by the Rays with a 1.76 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. There's a good chance he'll be up again soon. Both pitchers should be left on waivers as they have undefined roles with the team.
