Craig Stammen Named Padres New Manager

The San Diego Padres hired former right-handed relief pitcher Craig Stammen to a three-year deal on Thursday to be their new manager, according to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Stammen, who just retired from professional baseball three years ago, will take over for Mike Shildt. The Padres chose Stammen, who has no managerial experience, over Texas Rangers special assistant Nick Hundley, current pitching coach Ruben Niebla, and future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols. Stammen was mostly used as a reliever in his 13 big-league seasons, six of which came with the Padres from 2017-22. After retiring, he joined San Diego's front office, serving as a special assistant to the major-league staff and baseball operations. The Padres are still looking for their first World Series championship, although they have been to the postseason in three of the last four years.

Padres Announce Craig Stammen Has Retired

The Padres announced veteran right-hander Craig Stammen has retired. The 39-year-old suffered a right shoulder injury during spring training and hinted at retirement, so the update isn't surprising. Stammen was drafted by the Nationals in 2005. He appeared in 562 career games in Washington and San Diego, mostly out of the bullpen, amassing a 3.66 ERA and 108 holds.

Craig Stammen Removed From Friday's Game

San Diego Padres pitcher Craig Stammen (shoulder) was removed early during Friday's Cactus League contest. The veteran right-hander was forced to exit early due to discomfort in his pitching shoulder. This is not good news considering Stammen missed a majority of the second half of the 2022 campaign due to shoulder issues. It's likely that the organization has Stammen undergo further testing. However, there's a good chance that Stammen does require a trip to the injured list. Fantasy managers will have to check back for another update on his status.

Craig Stammen Returns To Padres On Minor-League Deal

The San Diego Padres re-signed right-hander Craig Stammen to a minor-league deal on Wednesday, according to a source. Stammen will be invited to major-league spring training with the Friars for the seventh straight season. The 38-year-old reliever has been solid for the Padres in middle relief the last six seasons and posted a 4.43 ERA (5.15 FIP), 1.35 WHIP and 19.8% strikeout rate in 33 outings (one start) over 40 2/3 innings in 2022. He wasn't as good as he was in 2021, but Stammen has been workmanlike out of the SD bullpen with a 3.36 ERA (3.76 FIP), 1.14 WHIP, five saves and a 23.0% strikeout rate in 394 1/3 innings over the last six seasons. Stammen dealt with injuries last year and will strictly provide the Pads with more relief depth in 2023.

Padres Exercise Options on Pierce Johnson, Craig Stammen

The San Diego Padres announced several roster decisions on Friday, exercising their contract options on relief pitchers Pierce Johnson and Craig Stammen and declining their contract options on outfielder Jake Marisnick and relief pitcher Keone Kela. Johnson and Stammen return to an excellent bullpen in 2022, one that may not feature Mark Melancon after the veteran right-hander chose to enter free agency. That leaves the closer role open, and while Emilio Pagan and Drew Pomeranz should have the inside track on the job, it would not be shocking for Johnson or Stammen to find themselves in some higher leverage situations.

Craig Stammen Fares Poorly As Opener

San Diego Padres reliever Craig Stammen allowed four earned runs in two innings as the opener Tuesday against the Miami Marlins. The 37-year-old encountered trouble from the get-go, permitting three runs in the first frame before getting tagged with another one an inning later. He allowed six knocks and fanned two without any walks. The right-hander has been a valuable bullpen piece for the Friars in 2021, registering a solid 3.18 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 25 percent strikeout rate in 65 frames while pitching in various situations. However, with long relief his key function, Stammen isn't actionable from a fantasy perspective.

Craig Stammen Could Join Starting Rotation

San Diego Padres relief pitcher Craig Stammen might end up joining the starting rotation before the regular season is over. Manager Jayce Tingler said the team isn't ruling him using Stammen as a starter. He went two innings during a spot start in June and will get the nod against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. The team will continue to let him go as long as possible, assuming he feels good on the mound. That means, Stammen could go four or five innings eventually if he is pitching well. It's unknown if the 37-year-old would have long term success as a starter at this point. Although, his fantasy value could be on the rise here soon.

Craig Stammen Activated From Paternity List

San Diego Padres relief pitcher Craig Stammen (personal) has been activated off the paternity list following a short stint away from the team. He ended up missing three games, but is back as a main piece in the Padres bullpen. Stammen is posting a 2.78 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 52/8 K/BB ratio across 55 innings this season. He doesn't have a ton of fantasy upside, but is certainly an asset in formats where relievers are valuable. Left-hander Daniel Camarena has been optioned to the minors in a corresponding move.

Craig Stammen Lands On Paternity List

The San Diego Padres placed right-hander Craig Stammen on the paternity leave list on Tuesday and recalled right-hander Miguel Diaz from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move. Stammen will only be away from the team for a few days. The 37-year-old reliever doesn't have much fantasy appeal in a middle-relief role, but he's been great for the Friars this year with his 2.78 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, one save and 52 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched. Diaz hasn't been bad either, posting a 3.38 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 32 punch-outs in 29 1/3 innings over 17 outings (two starts), but he's likely to head back to the minor leagues when Stammen returns later this week.

Blake Snell Scratched, Craig Stammen Making Spot Start

San Diego Padres starter Blake Snell (illness) has been scratched from Tuesday's start against the Cincinnati Reds. The left-hander is apparently under the weather and reliever Craig Stammen will make a spot start. Snell has endured a rocky season, carrying a 5.29 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 66 innings (15 starts). After shutting out the Los Angeles Dodgers over five frames in his last start, fantasy managers were surely hoping to see if he could continue the momentum. Expected to make his next turn, Snell's next chance will now likely come this weekend on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies. For DFS players, Stammen isn't a realistic pivot despite a 2.82 ERA this season as his workload will be limited to a handful of innings.
