Marlins Designate Daniel Castano For Assignment

The Miami Marlins designated left-hander Daniel Castano for assignment on Thursday to make room on the 40-man roster for the recently signed Johnny Cueto. The 2022 season was a tough one for Castano, as he suffered a concussion and also had a small labrum tear in his left shoulder in September. He ended up making just 10 appearances (seven starts) for the Fish, allowing 20 runs (16 earned) on 42 hits (five homers) while walking nine and striking out 20 in 35 2/3 innings pitched. Because there's a good chance he won't be ready for the start of spring training, he could go unclaimed on waivers, at which point he'd be free to sign with any MLB club. Castano has a 3.89 ERA (4.86 FIP) and 1.42 WHIP in three big-league seasons with Miami.

Daniel Castano Dodges A Bullet

A CT scan came back normal on Miami Marlins left-hander Daniel Castano (concussion) on Thursday after he was hit in the forehead by a 104 mph comebacker in his outing against the Cincinnati Reds. Castano got the start and allowed an earned run on two hits in just two-thirds of an inning before departing the contest. The 27-year-old southpaw was diagnosed with a mild concussion and forehead contusion, but it could have been much worse. Although he may not be out for an extended period of time, there's still a good chance he'll go on the seven-day injured list. Coming into the day, Castano was 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 20 strikeouts and nine walks in 35 innings over nine outings (six starts).

Daniel Castano Hit In The Head By A Comebacker

Miami Marlins left-hander Daniel Castano (forehead) was involved in a scary incident during Thursday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. He was hit in his head by a comebacker off the bat of Reds infielder Donovan Solano. The hit was clocked off Solano's bat at 104.3 mph. Castano was removed from the game and he was able to walk off the field under his own power. As he walked off, a massive bruise on his forehead was on full display. The initial evaluation from the team was that he suffered a mild concussion and a forehead contusion. He will still be evaluated further and we should have more updates on his status later.

Daniel Castano Called Up Then Immediately Unavailable

Miami Marlins left-handed pitcher Daniel Castano was called up on Monday and then immediately unavailable due to a shoulder issue. Castano was brought up to aid the bullpen in what was planned to be a bullpen game (the Marlins will likely have to have another one on Wednesday) but was unavailable once the game started. According to the always eloquent Don Mattingly, Castano "felt something" before the game and was not available to pitch. It's unclear at this point if it's an issue that will require a stint on the injured list, but Castano has no business on fantasy rosters anyway. The Marlins pitching staff is in trouble.

Daniel Castano Lasts Just Four Innings Again On Saturday

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Daniel Castano was called up to make Saturday's start against the Milwaukee Brewers and lasted just four innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, striking out five. The five strikeouts was a season high for Castano and actually doubled his season total. He simply doesn't make batters swing and miss often enough. Castano profiles as a back-of-the-rotation innings eater type of soft-tossing lefty, but he's yet to throw more than five innings in a start. He'll take a 5.19 ERA into his next start and is not even on the streaming radar at this point.

Daniel Castano Optioned On Thursday

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Daniel Castano was optioned to the alternate training site on Thursday. No corresponding move has been announced yet. Castano was forced into the starting rotation after the injury to Elieser Hernandez (biceps) earlier this season. Castano started three games but pitched just 13 1/3 innings, putting up a 4.73 ERA and five walks with five strikeouts. He's a pitch-to-contact guy who should be able to eat innings, but there's very little upside here from a fantasy standpoint. The Marlins will likely call up an extra bullpen arm for their weekend series against the Nationals.

Daniel Castano Doesn't Get Through Four Innings On Tuesday

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Daniel Castano couldn't get through four innings against the Milwaukee Brewers in Tuesday's loss. Castano started the game and made it through 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three. He gave up two solo home runs, including one to the opposing starting pitcher. Castano is a guy who pitches to contact and rarely misses bats. He has no overpowering pitches and profiles as a back-of-the-rotation guy at best. He'll likely need to continue making starts for the Marlins until their injured starters are ready to go.

Daniel Castano Settles In After A Rough First Inning

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Daniel Castano settled in after a rough first inning in Thursday night's game against the San Francisco Giants. In total, Castano ended up pitching five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two. All three runs scored in the 3-0 game came around in the first inning. It wasn't a great start overall from the lefty, but it was impressive to see Castano keep his composure and keep his team in the game despite the bad inning right at the start. Castano is likely sticking in the rotation for a while, but his lack of swing-and-miss stuff doesn't make him a particularly attractive fantasy asset.

Daniel Castano Solid In His First Start Of The Year

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Daniel Castano was solid in his first start of the season on Friday. Facing the San Francisco Giants, Castano threw five innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks. He managed to pitch well and mostly keep the Giants off the board despite not recording a single strikeout. Castano has never missed many bats, but he induces weak contact and has been good at avoiding big innings. He's a decent "real life" pitcher but likely shouldn't be rostered in most fantasy formats.

Daniel Castano Pitches Well On Sunday

Miami Marlins left-handed pitcher Daniel Castano pitched well in a Grapefruit League game against the New York Mets on Sunday. He tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits without issuing a walk and striking out five. Some reports had him touching 95 mph on the radar gun, which would be impressive for Castano. He's never been a huge strikeout guy, but he's been good at keeping runs off the scoreboard for the most part thanks to excellent and control and a knack for inducing weak contact. The Marlins have a long list of solid mid-to-back-end rotation starters, so Castano will need to start the season either in the bullpen or in a minor league rotation. He should be one of the first pitchers asked to start if any of the starting five go down.
