The Kansas City Royals agreed to sign right-hander Daniel Mengden to a minor league deal on Tuesday. In addition to Mengden, the Royals signed former Houston Astros swingman Brad Peacock to a minor league deal on Monday, giving them some rotation depth for the 2022 season. Mengden, 29, had a 3.60 ERA with 104 strikeouts in 120 innings while pitching in Korea last year. In five major league seasons with the Oakland Athletics before that, he had a 4.64 ERA and 1.31 WHIP while striking out 224 and walking 102 in 302 2/3 innings over 60 appearances (48 starts) from 2016-20. In the shortened 2020 campaign, Mengden allowed five earned runs in 12 1/3 innings over four outings (one start) for the A's.
Oakland Athletics pitcher Daniel Mengden was optioned to the team's alternate training site over the weekend and passed through waivers on Tuesday afternoon. The 27-year-old posted a combined 12-8 record with a 4.31 ERA across the 2018 and 2019 seasons, but a positive COVID-19 test derailed his 2020 season. The team had no room for Mengden on their roster, but the assumption is that another club will take a chance on him during the offseason. He has shown flashes of effectiveness at the MLB level.
Oakland Athletics right-handed pitcher Daniel Mengden was placed on the injured list Thursday due to a positive COVID-19 test, which paves the way for left-handed pitcher Mike Minor to join the active roster. Mengden has been utilized primarily as a long reliever this season after making one start in July; all told, he has produced a 3.65 ERA across 12 frames with 10 strikeouts to his credit. Spots on the As staff are presumably up for grabs with Minor entering the fray, while No. 3 prospect A.J. Puk nears a return within the next week. Mengden holds little season-long fantasy intrigue at this stage, with Oakland set to return to play Friday.
Daniel Mengden Will Be Ready For Second Spring Training
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Daniel Mengden (elbow) said he is fully recovered from elbow surgery in February and will be ready to report when camps open up July 1. Mengden had surgery before spring training to remove bone spurs from his elbow. Mengden is expected to compete for a rotation spot when camps open up again next week, but he's a long shot to make an impact in standard fantasy leagues during the 60-game season. Mengden has just a 17.3 percent strikeout rate, and his 5.73 xFIP was higher than every qualified pitcher last season.
Daniel Mengden Expects To Be Ready When Baseball Resumes
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Daniel Mengden(elbow) said he expects to be ready for the start of the season whenever MLB is ready to resume play. Mengden had two surgeries on his digestive system this offseason and arthroscopic surgery on his pitching elbow in February. The right-hander would've missed the first few months of the season anyway, but he has been throwing in the bullpen and feels he is on track to start the season with the team. Despite being healthy, Mengden is an unappealing fantasy option. His 5.73 xFIP was worse than every qualified pitcher last season and he won't rack up strikeouts, either, thanks to a low 16.2 percent strikeout rate.
Oakland Athletics starter Daniel Mengden is expected to move to the bullpen or get optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas in the coming days after the team acquired starting pitcher Tanner Roark from the Cincinnati Reds at Wednesday's trade deadline. The 26-year-old made nine starts for the Athletics in 2019, going 5-2 with a 4.85 ERA and 41 strikeouts over 55 2/3 innings. Mengden could be ignored across all formats while Roark's value is likely to increase on a contending team.
Oakland Athletics starter Daniel Mengden allowed four runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings of work during Sunday's 7-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins. He struck out two batters while walking five. Before the game, Mengden had not allowed a walk in his previous 18 innings. The 26-year-old owns a 5-1 record this season to go along with a bloated 4.65 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 36/21 K/BB rate. Mengden is a valid option in AL-Only formats, but he is tough to roster in standard leagues. He'll look to bounce back in his next projected start against the Texas Rangers.
Oakland Athletics starter Daniel Mengden allowed one run on four hits across seven innings of work during a 9-2 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday. He struck out three batters without issuing a walk. It was an impressive appearance for the 26-year-old, who now owns a 5-1 record on the season to go along with a 4.21 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and a 34/16 K/BB rate. Despite the respectable outing, Mengden is tough to trust in his next projected start against the high-powered Minnesota Twins.
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Daniel Mengden allowed five earned runs, eight hits and no walks with two homers allowed and five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in a win against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. He threw 61 of his 85 pitches for strikes, including 16 first-pitch strikes to the 24 batters he faced. Despite the shaky outing, Mengden has won back-to-back starts for the first time since winning four straight outings from May 15-31, 2018. He'll look to make it three in a row on Sunday in Seattle.
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Daniel Mengden will draw the start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. Frankie Montas (suspension) is out 80 games after testing positive for PEDs. Mengden will be given another chance, but his 5.09 ERA is hard to ignore. He won't be worth looking at in most formats until he turns it around.
