Toronto Blue Jays utility player Darnell Sweeney has been outrighted by the Blue Jays to Triple-A Buffalo. By doing so, Sweeney is now off the teams 50-man roster. He had been previously been optioned on Monday. Originally called up on June 29 to provide depth after the Jays traded outfielder Steve Pearce to the Boston Red Sox, Sweeney did not receive any at-bats in this Major League stint. He has 98 career plate appearances playing both the infield and outfield, all coming for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015, and he slashed .176/.286/.353 with three home runs. Hell continue to provide minor league depth for Toronto, but clearly the chances are there wont ever be any fantasy value here.
Blue Jays Recall Lourdes Gurriel, Option Darnell Sweeney
The Toronto Blue Jays promoted second baseman Lourdes Gurrielto the majors once again on Monday. In a corresponding move, the team optioned second baseman Darnell Sweeney to Triple-A Buffalo. He did not receive an at-bat in the majors this season. Gurriel, the brother of the Houston Astros own Yuli Gurriel, has not impressed in his limited time in the big leagues this season. Hes hit to a .222 batting average, but the Blue Jays undoubtedly hope he can reach the heralded potential he had as an international prospect. That said, he can be left on the waiver wire in standard leagues for now, but dynasty players who picked him up will have to wait and see whether he can keep his starting spot this time around.
