Marcell Ozuna is Absent on Sunday

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Marcell Ozuna (rest) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Sunday's game against the New York Mets. This looks to be a routine rest day for Ozuna, who started the first two games of the season. Over that span, Ozuna is 1-for-9 with a walk, so a trip to the bench seems fair. Bryan Reynolds will cover left field, while Jake Mangum takes over as the designated hitter versus right-hander Nolan McLean on Sunday. Ozuna has good power upside, but is only worth a look in mixed leagues to start the season.

Oneil Cruz Out of Starting Lineup on Saturday Against Lefty

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Oneil Cruz is not in the starting lineup for his team's matchup with the New York Mets and left-handed starting pitcher David Peterson on Saturday. Switch-hitter Jake Mangum will take Cruz's spot in center field and bat ninth. Cruz's 2026 season got off to a rough start in Pittsburgh's opener against the Mets on Thursday, as he struck out three times in five plate appearances and misplayed a ball in center field that led to multiple runs for New York. The 27-year-old owns a slash line of .172/.247/.313 with a 38.4% strikeout rate in 401 career plate appearances against left-handed pitching. It appears that Pittsburgh is planning to deploy Cruz in a true big-side platoon role in center field, at least to begin 2026. Cruz's power/speed profile makes him a high-upside fantasy outfielder, but his ability to rack up counting stats is limited by his lack of everyday playing time.

Ryan O'Hearn Homers in Team Debut

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Ryan O'Hearn made his team debut versus the New York Mets on Thursday. He came ready to swing the bat on Opening Day. O'Hearn went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in the loss. He took right-hander Tobias Myers deep in the sixth inning and singled in the ninth inning. The Pirates signed O'Hearn to a two-year, $29 million deal over the offseason. The first time All-Star slashed .281/.366/.437 with 17 home runs and 63 RBI across 144 games with the Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres last season. The 32-year-old should get regular playing time in the middle of the order in Pittsburgh. He's someone worth monitoring in fantasy leagues, but is more of a deep league option at the moment.

Yankees Tried to Trade for Paul Skenes During Offseason

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes is arguably the best pitcher in baseball and has been a hot topic in trade rumors. The New York Yankees reportedly offered four prospects for Skenes during the offseason. It wasn't enough as the Pirates didn't even listen to the offer, according to Jon Heyman. The 23-year-old star pitcher isn't a free agent until 2030, so there's no urgency for the Pirates to move the right-hander. The organization made multiple moves this offseason to add offense in an attempt to build a better team around Skenes. It's not shocking that they weren't willing to trade him with the organization actively trying to be competitive right now. The Pirates didn't even entertain an offer of four prospects, so it's unclear what they'd even consider for Skenes.

Paul Skenes Greeted Harshly by Mets on Opening Day

It was not the Opening Day that Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes was expecting on Thursday on the road against the New York Mets. Skenes took the loss and didn't make it out of the first inning, allowing five earned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning. He was pulled after just 37 pitches in an eventual 11-7 loss. Most of the damage against Skenes came on a bases-loaded triple. It was just one of those days, and not even Skenes is immune to them. The reigning National League Cy Young winner and former Rookie of the Year will be well-rested for his second start of 2026, which will come next Wednesday, April 1, against the Cincinnati Reds. We think Skenes will bounce back just fine. He is already one of the most dominant starting pitchers in the league in just his third major-league campaign.

Brandon Lowe  • 2B  •  Pirates

Brandon Lowe Hits Two Home Runs on Opening Day

Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Brandon Lowe had a really nice debut with the Bucs in an 11-7 Opening Day loss to the New York Mets on Thursday, going 2-for-4 with two solo home runs and three RBI. Both of his home runs came off new Mets right-hander Freddy Peralta. It's nice to see for Lowe, who hit just 6-for-30 (.200) with no homers or RBI, six walks, and 12 strikeouts in 36 plate appearances over 13 Grapefruit League games in spring training. There's still a lot to like about the left-handed pop that Lowe can provide at the second base position, especially if he continues to hit near the top of the Pirates' batting order. However, the drawbacks are that Lowe is very injury-prone and that he has never hit lefties well (.695 career OPS). He's coming off his second career 30-homer season in 2025, though, and he's had at least 21 long balls in each of the last three seasons. The two-time All-Star's .326 career on-base percentage doesn't scream two-hole hitter.

Bubba Chandler Carrying Some Momentum Into 2026

Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Bubba Chandler appears set to open the season in the team's starting rotation, though no official confirmation has been made yet by the team. Right now, RosterResource projects the Pirates' top-ranked pitching prospect as the team's No. 3 starter. The right-hander didn't have the cleanest of springs, but looked sharp his last time out, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out eight batters and walking only one over five innings of work. The 6-foot-3 hurler finished 2025 on a high note as well, allowing just two earned runs over his final three starts while recording a pristine 19:0 K:BB in 16 2/3 innings pitched. Hopefully he can carry that momentum into 2026, and if he can, then the 23-year-old could end up as a real value pick in fantasy drafts, currently going around pick No. 160, whereas RotoBaller ranks him at 145 overall.

Dennis Santana  • RP  •  Pirates

Dennis Santana Won't be Pirates' Primary Closer

Jose Negron of DK Pittsburgh Sports reports that the Pittsburgh Pirates aren't expected to have a designated closer going into the 2026 regular season. Manager Don Kelly said that right-hander Dennis Santana will get a lot of time in the ninth inning, but "he won't be the only one." "Gregory Soto has closed, we've got guys on the back end that can handle it with the stuff they have," Kelly said. Santana is still probably the best fantasy bet for saves in the Steel City, but Soto and Isaac Mattson could also see opportunities, especially if Santana hits a rough patch at any point. The 29-year-old Dominican had a strong 2.18 ERA (3.21 FIP), 0.87 WHIP, a career-high 16 saves, 60 strikeouts, and 17 walks in 70 1/3 innings in a career year with the Bucs in 2025. Santana saw 10 of the team's final 12 save chances last year after they traded away David Bednar. This news further cements the fact that Santana remains a risky fantasy closer despite the fact that he's the favorite for saves to begin the year.

Hunter Barco Cracks Opening Day Roster

According to DK Pittsburgh Sports, Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed pitching prospect Hunter Barco has made the Opening Day roster. However, the team has yet to decide on Barco's role for the start of the season. In the minor leagues, he developed as a starter, but during his first taste of MLB action last summer, he came out of the bullpen. In spring training, Barco logged 9 1/3 innings to the tune of a 2.89 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP. In 2025, Barco logged only three innings in the majors but did not allow a run and struck out three hitters. In the minor leagues, he logged 99 1/3 innings with an impressive 2.81 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. Managers should continue to monitor his usage, as he could have some streaming upside if given spot starts throughout the summer.

Konnor Griffin to Start the Year at Triple-A

It was announced on Saturday that Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin would not be on the team's Opening Day roster, and on Sunday, Milb Central reports that Griffin will start the year at Triple-A Indianapolis. It was looking like the 19-year-old phenom might become the first teenager to start on Opening Day since Ken Griffey Jr. did it back in 1989. He hit just .171 (7-for-41) in 16 Grapefruit League games, but Griffin also had four home runs, nine RBI, a stolen base, five runs scored, and a .749 OPS this spring. The former ninth overall pick in 2024 impressed his teammates with his physicality and his maturity in spring training. In three minor-league levels in 2025, Griffin excelled with a .333/.415/.527 slash line, .941 OPS, 21 home runs, 94 RBI, 117 runs scored, and 65 stolen bases in 122 games played. Griffin can do it all on the diamond and should be up in Pittsburgh for his major-league debut sooner than later in 2026. Even though he'll start in the minors, fantasy managers should be stashing the potential once-in-a-generation talent.

Carmen Mlodzinski Makes the Pirates' Opening Day Rotation

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski has made the starting rotation out of camp, according to Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Manager Don Kelly said that Mlodzinski will open the year in the No. 3 spot, putting him in line to start on Sunday, March 29, against the New York Mets. Mlodzinski split the last three years between the Pirates' bullpen and rotation, ultimately logging a career-high 99 innings of work last year. Across those 99 frames, he posted a respectable 3.33 FIP with 8.09 K/9, 2.45 BB/9, and a 47.5% ground ball rate. If he sticks in the rotation for a while, he could end up commanding some fantasy consideration in deeper leagues.

Konnor Griffin  • SS  •  Pirates

Konnor Griffin Assigned to Minor-League Camp

The Pittsburgh Pirates have assigned top infield prospect Konnor Griffin to minor league camp earlier on Saturday. The top prospect in the sport was in serious consideration to crack the Opening Day roster but will instead begin his 2026 campaign in the minor leagues. Even though he has yet to take a Triple-A at-bat, Griffin held his own in camp and was nearly named the team's Opening Day shortstop. Across 16 spring training games, the former first-round pick held a modest .173 AVG but hit four long balls with one stolen base. Last summer, Griffin made his professional debut and held an elite .333/.415/.527 line with 21 home runs and an eye-catching 65 stolen bases across 122 contests split between Low-A, High-A, and Double-A. Fantasy managers should expect Griffin to potentially begin the regular season with Triple-A and may only need a brief taste before reaching the Steel City. He is a top stash candidate in all formats ahead of Opening Day.

Braxton Ashcraft  • SP  •  Pirates

Braxton Ashcraft Has Late-Round Sleeper Appeal Heading into 2026

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Braxton Ashcraft put up quality numbers across 26 games (eight starts) in his first taste of the big leagues in 2025, posting a 4-4 record with a 2.71 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 71 strikeouts across 69 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old appears to be locked into a full-time rotation role heading into 2026, and he could be on the verge of a breakout campaign. Across 13 1/3 innings this spring, Ashcraft has recorded 16 strikeouts while allowing just one walk. He also did a nice job limiting hard contact in his MLB appearances in 2025, allowing just a 38.5% hard-hit rate and posting a 0.39 HR/9. For fantasy managers searching the late rounds of drafts for starting pitchers with upside, Ashcraft could be a name to target.

Konnor Griffin Survives Latest Round of Pirates' Roster Cuts

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin survived the team's latest round of cuts from its MLB roster, per Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. With less than a week remaining before the team's opener on Thursday against the New York Mets, Griffin breaking camp with the big-league club is starting to look more and more likely. The 19-year-old is widely considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball, and he dominated minor league pitching to a .333/.415/.527 slash line with 21 home runs, 94 RBI, 117 runs scored, and 65 stolen bases across 563 plate appearances in 2025. However, Griffin did not reach Triple-A and has just 98 Double-A plate appearances to his name. If he opens 2026 as the starting shortstop in Pittsburgh, he'll likely experience some early-season growing pains as he adjusts to big-league pitching. Still, Griffin carries sky-high upside with the potential to deliver five-category production for fantasy managers as soon as this season.

Pirates Talking Extension With Konnor Griffin

The Pittsburgh Pirates have discussed a possible long-term contract extension with shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin, a source told Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. Griffin is MLB Pipeline's consensus top prospect in baseball, and even though he hasn't had his 20th birthday yet, he could be the team's Opening Day starting shortstop next week. Talk has been around a deal for as long as nine years and more than $100 million, according to Mayo's source. If Griffin starts on Opening Day, he'd be the first teenager to make his MLB debut on Opening Day since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1989. Griffin is hitting just .206 (7-for-34) in 13 Grapefruit League games, but he has an .859 OPS with four homers and nine RBI, and he has impressed his teammates with his raw power and maturity. He made it look easy at three minor-league levels in 2025, slashing .333/.415/.527 with 21 homers and 65 steals. It was just the fifth 20-60 season in minor-league history. Griffin might just be one of those generational talents that don't come around too often. Even if he doesn't start the year in the majors, Griffin is going to produce for fantasy managers in all formats in 2026.

Konnor Griffin Avoids Another Round of Roster Cuts

After another roster cutdown by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin remains in big-league camp and is one step closer to making the 2026 Opening Day roster. If the Pirates go with the best player at the shortstop position this spring, it would be Griffin, a 19-year-old phenom who is trying to be the first teenager in the big leagues since Juan Soto. The former ninth overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft made it look easy in three minor-league levels in 2025 in his first professional season, hitting .333/.415/.527 with a .941 OPS, 21 home runs, 94 RBI, 117 runs scored, and 65 stolen bases in 122 total games (563 plate appearances) with Single-A Bradenton, High-A Greensboro, and Double-A Altoona. With an advanced approach at the plate, impressive strength, and high-end power/speed abilities, Griffin has the makings of a once-in-a-generation player that could really make a difference in his first MLB season without any experience at Triple-A. All signs are pointing to Kriffin being on the Opening Day roster, and he'll certainly have an impact in all fantasy baseball formats in 2026.

Paul Skenes  • SP  •  Pirates

Pirates Officially Name Paul Skenes Their Opening Day Starter

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Thursday that right-hander Paul Skenes will start on Opening Day on Thursday, March 26, on the road at Citi Field against the New York Mets. It's not the easiest of opening matchups, but fantasy managers should never be benching the mighty Skenes. The 23-year-old former first overall pick out of LSU in 2023 made a quick rise to the big leagues and has quickly established himself as one of the most dominant arms in the game in just two MLB seasons. He's been an All-Star in both of his big-league campaigns, won the National League Rookie of the Year in 2024, and the first of likely many Cy Young awards in 2025. Skenes has gone 21-13 with a 1.96 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 386:74 K:BB in 320 2/3 innings over his 55 starts for the Bucs. He looked great pitching for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic and will look to get his year started on the right foot in New York next week.

Braxton Ashcraft Stars in Pirates' Victory

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Braxton Ashcraft struck out eight in 5 1/3 strong innings on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers. The 26-year-old appeared in 26 games (eight starts) in his first taste of the majors last season, logging 69 2/3 innings and compiling a 2.71 ERA and 2.78 FIP. He looks ready to anchor a key spot in the Pirates' rotation going into the season and is an underrated part of the Pirates' exciting young rotation. If you need a late-round starting pitcher, Ashcraft can be an intriguing sleeper pick and can definitely be a streaming option to consider early in the season if he goes undrafted in mixed leagues.

Edward Florentino  • OF  •  Pirates

Edward Florentino a Powerful Bat to Keep an Eye on in 2026

Pittsburgh Pirates outfield prospect Edward Florentino broke in with the team as a 17-year-old playing in the Dominican Summer League in 2024, then dominated the Florida Complex League in 2025 to the tune of a .347 batting average, six home runs, and a 1.085 OPS in 29 games before earning a promotion to Single-A. The Pirates' fourth-ranked prospect showed off his power stroke there, belting 10 more home runs in 54 games for Bradenton as an 18-year-old, while also drawing walks at a 13.9 percent rate. The 6-foot-3 slugger could spend much of the 2026 season at High-A, and with a strong showing, he could see at-bats at Double-A by season's end. The 19-year-old is still likely a couple of years away from the majors, but has the tools to make for an intriguing fantasy asset in dynasty leagues, so interested managers should keep an eye on his progress in the upcoming campaign.

Konnor Griffin Avoids Next Round of Roster Cuts

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin was not listed among the team's latest batch of roster cuts on Tuesday. As the Pirates inch closer to trimming their Opening Day roster to 26 players, it appears that Griffin remains in the mix for a spot. It would be a remarkable story if he ends up making the team, as he's just 19 years old and was drafted out of high school less than two years ago. Griffin tore up the minors to the tune of a .333/.415/.527 slash line last year, and he also added 21 home runs and 65 stolen bases. He plays terrific defense at shortstop with some additional pro experience in center field. His slash line has dropped to .206/.270/.588 against big-league pitching this spring, but he has still jolted four homers with an above-average 110 wRC+. Media projections have been torn on whether Griffin will break camp with the major league squad, but the fact that he survived Tuesday's cuts is another step in the right direction. As it stands, the Pirates have 13 more cuts to make within the next nine days. Even if Griffin doesn't make the Opening Day roster, he'll start the year in Triple-A and should mount a pretty quick push to make his MLB debut.
