Mason Montgomery Is Worth Chasing for Saves

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Mason Montgomery picked up his fourth save of the season Friday, getting the final out of an 8-4 win over the Boston Red Sox. Kirby Yates opened the ninth with no save opportunity but gave up three straight two-out singles, bringing Montgomery in with two runners aboard and the tying run on deck. The left-hander struck out Adley Rutschman to finish it. Three of Montgomery's four saves have now come over his last seven appearances. Montgomery has been rolling lately, posting a 1.32 ERA, 0.66 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts across his last 13 2/3 innings. Pittsburgh still hasn't settled on one closer, with Gregory Soto and Luke Weaver also getting late-inning looks. Montgomery keeps finding his way into save chances, though, and the strikeouts give him something to offer even when the ninth goes elsewhere. At 10% rostered on Yahoo, he's worth chasing in deeper leagues for managers who need saves.

Mason Montgomery Emerging as Potential Waiver-Wire Target

Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever Mason Montgomery allowed one hit and struck out the side in his inning of work on Monday to pick up his third save of the year in the 4-3 win on the road against the division-rival Milwaukee Brewers. The 26-year-old southpaw was used in this contest after both left-hander Gregory Soto and the newly-acquired Camilo Doval, and all three of his saves this season have come since July 11. Montgomery has been strong at the back end of Pittsburgh's bullpen since the start of July, giving up just two earned runs with five walks, 26 strikeouts, two wins, three saves, and a hold. In just his third major-league season and first with the Bucs in 2026, Montgomery has gone 4-3 with a 3.72 ERA (2.75 FIP), 1.19 WHIP, and 72:21 K:BB in 46 innings across 47 appearances (five starts). Montgomery has become more intriguing as a deep-league source of saves, but his opportunities figure to dwindle after the Pirates acquired right-handed reliever Luke Weaver from the New York Mets at Monday's trade deadline. Weaver is expected to become Pittsburgh's primary closer the rest of the way.

Mason Montgomery Earns Second Save as Fantasy Value Continues to Rise

Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Mason Montgomery earned his second save of the season in the team's 8-7 win over the division-rival Chicago Cubs on Sunday, although it didn't come easily. Montgomery allowed two earned runs on two hits (one homer) while walking none and striking out two. The 26-year-old southpaw is getting more run in high-leverage, late-inning situations, and he got the call in the ninth in this one over left-hander Gregory Soto, who has been the team's primary saves option for the majority of the 2026 season. Montgomery is now 3-3 on the season with two saves, a 4.04 ERA (2.92 FIP), 1.23 WHIP, and 65:19 K:BB in 42 1/3 innings across his 43 appearances (five starts) in his third year in the majors (first in Pittsburgh). While the Pirates seem to be trusting Montgomery more now that reliever Dennis Santana is out of the picture, Soto is still the better option for saves in the Pirates' bullpen for fantasy managers. Montgomery is currently rostered in 4% of Yahoo leagues, although he's an option for those desperate in deeper leagues.

Mason Montgomery Is Pittsburgh's Best Saves Stash

Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever Mason Montgomery struck out two in a clean eighth inning against Cleveland on Sunday. Make that seven straight scoreless appearances, 6 1/3 innings in all, with one hit allowed and 12 strikeouts. He picked up his first save of the season during that run. Montgomery's 3.92 ERA and 1.26 WHIP are not exactly closer numbers. Fifty-eight strikeouts in 39 innings tell a different story. The ninth is not his, at least not yet. Pittsburgh started him Saturday, then used him with a four-run lead Sunday. Gregory Soto could not protect the lead in Saturday's nightcap, and Dennis Santana gave up the walk-off homer. It is still a committee, and a messy one. Montgomery is missing the most bats and has the momentum. RotoBaller has him in the 12-team range, which makes him the Pittsburgh reliever to stash for future saves.

Mason Montgomery Emerging as a Top Waiver-Wire Target?

Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever Mason Montgomery worked around a walk to finish Saturday's 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 2 of a doubleheader, striking out two in a hitless ninth for his first save of the season. Gregory Soto had closed Game 1, so Pittsburgh is still splitting late work. Montgomery has put himself squarely in the picture, though. He has allowed no runs with five strikeouts and one walk over his last three appearances, and his season total is up to 55 strikeouts in 37 innings. The 4.14 ERA is not pretty, but a 34.8% strikeout rate and 3.21 xERA make the profile more interesting than the surface number. RotoBaller now lists Montgomery alongside Soto atop a volatile committee and recommends him in 12-team leagues. With only a 2% Yahoo roster rate, he is one of the better speculative saves adds available, even if calling him Pittsburgh's closer would be premature.

Mason Montgomery the Next Closer to Roster in Pittsburgh?

Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever Mason Montgomery is pushing into the ninth-inning conversation as the club mixes its late-inning assignments. Montgomery struck out the side in a non-save ninth against Philadelphia on July 2, one inning after Gregory Soto handled the top of the order. The 26-year-old has a 4.50 ERA and 1.35 WHIP through 34 innings, but his 50 strikeouts are the main reason to speculate on him. No one has taken control of the job. Montgomery still has zero saves, Soto owns 11, and Dennis Santana has two, so fantasy managers are betting on the next opportunity rather than a settled role. FanGraphs lists all three in the closer committee, while RotoBaller recommends Montgomery in 12-team leagues. He is rostered in only 1% of Yahoo leagues and is worth adding for saves speculation, though managers should expect uneven ratios and a committee for now.

Mason Montgomery Worth a Look in Evolving Pirates Bullpen?

Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever Mason Montgomery and right-hander Dennis Santana have risen up the closer depth chart in Pittsburgh with lefty Gregory Soto struggling of late. Montgomery was afforded a couple of save opportunities in June, but the problem is he blew both of his save chances and struggled to a 6.52 ERA (3.00 FIP) with seven earned runs allowed on 11 hits (one homer) while walking six and striking out 16 in 9 2/3 innings with a 1-2 record, two blown saves, and a hold. Overall in 2026, the 26-year-old former sixth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021 out of Texas Tech University has gone 2-3 with a 4.68 ERA (3.35 FIP), 1.41 WHIP, and 46:16 K:BB in his 32 2/3 innings pitched across 33 outings (four starts) for the Bucs. While Montgomery is a late-inning option for the Pirates in their constantly evolving bullpen, he just hasn't been consistent enough in high-leverage situations for fantasy managers to trust as a source of saves in mixed leagues. Montgomery is rostered in just 1% of Yahoo leagues.

Rays Demote Mason Montgomery

The Tampa Bay Rays report that left-handed pitcher Mason Montgomery has been sent down to Triple-A. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Mason Englert was recalled to the big-league squad. Montgomery pitched well in 2024 when first called upon, but compiled an ugly 5.74 ERA and 1.77 WHIP through 40 appearances (31 1/3 innings) in 2025 despite good swing-and-miss stuff. He'll get some time to work things out in the lower levels. Englert pitched for Tampa Bay earlier this season, but hasn't since mid-June. He performed much better in the minors (1.23 ERA) this year than he did in the majors (4.84), so maybe his demotion was a productive one. He'll slot into the former's vacated spot in the bullpen.

Rays Promote Mason Montgomery To The Big Leagues

The Tampa Bay Rays selected the contract of left-handed pitching prospect Mason Montgomery from Triple-A Durham on Thursday and also recalled infielder Austin Shenton from Durham. In corresponding moves, the club designated catcher Alex Jackson for assignment and optioned left-hander Tyler Alexander to Durham. Montgomery began the 2024 season in the minors as a starter, but since being shifted to the bullpen recently at Durham, the 24-year-old southpaw has been much better, tossing 9 2/3 scoreless frames out of the bullpen with 20 strikeouts and only five walks. The former sixth-round pick in 2021 out of Texas Tech went 1-7 overall for Durham with a 6.26 ERA, a 1.61 WHIP and a 105:36 K:BB in 31 outings (14 starts). He'll most likely start in a relief role but could be an interesting arm in holds leagues in 2025 if he works his way into a high-leverage role in Tampa's 'pen.

Mason Montgomery Looks To Improve On Tuesday

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitching prospect Mason Montgomery will look to improve in his fourth start of the season on Tuesday for Triple-A Durham. The left-hander has been off to a rocky start this season with a 10.80 ERA in three starts and has gotten worst in each outing. The lefty is the Rays top pitching prospect and has quickly risen through the system. Walks have been an issue for him in the past, but this year he has just three in 10 innings with 10 strikeouts. Despite being the clubs top pitching prospect, he is just inside their top 10 prospects overall. With his struggles and the Rays set with their rotation at the moment, Montgomery can remain on the waiver wire in all formats.
