Spencer Horwitz Posts Six-RBI Game

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz put together an outstanding game at the plate during Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies. He got the fun started with a two-run home run off right-hander Bradley Blalock in the second inning. Horwitz followed up the fun with a three-run shot off southpaw Ryan Rolison in the sixth inning. He finished his day 3-for-5 with two homers and six RBI in the win. This was an awesome performance for Horwitz, but he's not consistent enough at the plate to warrant rostering in most fantasy formats.

Spencer Horwitz Homers from the Leadoff Spot

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz went 2-for-4 on Monday night in a 7-0 win over the Cardinals. He homered on the second pitch of the game from Erick Fedde, giving him two long balls on the season. Over his 36 games, the 27-year-old lefty is hitting .258 with a .310 wOBA. Monday was his first game all season in the leadoff spot after bouncing around the middle of the order in most matchups lately. He has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games, going 18-for-55 (.327) with six doubles and Monday's home run. With another right-handed pitcher on the mound on Tuesday, it will be interesting to see if the Pirates stick with Horwitz in the leadoff spot or go in a different direction. Especially if he's at the top of the lineup, Horwitz is starting to work his way onto some deep-league radar with his recent stretch of production.

Spencer Horwitz Absent on Thursday

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz is out of the starting lineup ahead of Thursday's game against the Houston Astros. This is a rare off day for Horwitz who has started in every game since May 20. Horwitz has good power potential, but hasn't done much at the plate this season. He's slashing .230/.299/.328 with one home run and five RBI this season. That being said, Horwitz isn't someone worth rostering in most fantasy formats. Jared Triolo will cover first base and bat eighth versus left-hander Framber Valdez on Thursday.

Spencer Horwitz Homers on Thursday

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz had a productive game in his team's 8-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. Horowitz went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI in the losing effort. The veteran blasted his first homer of the season off Brewers starter Aaron Civale in the fourth inning, a shot that traveled 409 feet with an exit velocity of 104.8 MPH. Horowitz has appeared in just six games for the Pirates after missing the majority of the first two months of the season following right wrist surgery. He will look to stay hot as the Pirates' regular first baseman.

Spencer Horwitz to Rejoin Pirates Friday

Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pittsburgh Pirates will activate first baseman Spencer Horwitz (wrist) from the injured list on Friday. Horwitz has been shelved since spring training after he underwent surgery to repair an extensor tendon in his thumb. Pittsburgh acquired him by trade last December in hopes that he'd solve their issues at first base, and he projects to be their everyday option there for the foreseeable future. The 27-year-old has only appeared in 112 games, with a bulk of that experience coming last season with the Blue Jays. He was solid for Toronto with 12 home runs, 19 doubles, 40 RBIs, and a .790 OPS over 97 contests. Horwitz didn't do anything too special during his rehab stint in the minors, but he did bat .323 with a double and a homer over 31 Triple-A at-bats.

Spencer Horwitz Moves Rehab Assignment To Triple-A

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz (wrist) has moved his rehab assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis. Horwitz has been sidelined since spring training to repair an extensor tendon in his right thumb. Horwitz began his rehab assignment at Double-A and needed just five games to earn the call to Triple-A. Through his first eight rehab appearances, Horwitz has held a .143/.200/.214 slash line with two doubles with a 5:2 K:BB. Last season, Horwitz appeared in a career-high 97 games for the Toronto Blue Jays and posted a solid .265/.357/.433 slash line with 19 doubles and 12 home runs. When he does return to the majors, fantasy managers should expect Horwitz to be the everyday first baseman in Pittsburgh.

Spencer Horwitz Batting Leadoff For Double-A Altoona

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz (wrist) begins his rehab assignment on Sunday, batting leadoff for the Double-A Altoona Curve. The Radford alum has yet to suit up in 2025 as he battled back from wrist surgery that was performed to address "chronic issues." Horwitz hit well the last time we saw him in the big leagues, slashing .265/.357/.433 with 12 homers, 19 doubles, 40 RBI, and 46 runs scored across 328 at-bats. He consistently hit for a high average during his time in the minors and should boost fantasy managers in that department once his rehab program is complete. The 27-year-old has also displayed excellent plate discipline throughout his career.

Spencer Horwitz Has Sutures Removed, Starts One-Handed Swinging

Pittsburgh Pirates senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said that first baseman Spencer Horwitz (wrist) had his sutures removed from his surgically-repaired wrist earlier this week and has started left-handed swinging with one hand only, fielding ground balls and doing conditioning work. Horwitz is still on track to return in six to eight weeks. The 27-year-old will most likely open the 2025 regular season on the injured list, which will open the door for Jared Triolo and Billy Cook to see most of the action at the cold corner early on. Whenever Horwitz is able to return, he's expected to see most of the playing time at first for Pittsburgh in his first year with the Bucs. The left-handed hitter was a bright spot for Toronto in 2024 in 97 games, slashing .265/.357/.433 with 12 home runs, 40 RBI and 46 runs scored.

Spencer Horwitz To Miss 6-8 Weeks

According to Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz (wrist) is expected to miss six to eight weeks. Hiles noted that Horwitz underwent a procedure on his right wrist last week to address "chronic symptoms" and is expected to make a full recovery. As a result, the 27-year-old will likely miss time during the start of the regular season and could open the 2025 campaign on the injured list. While he will be sidelined, fantasy managers should expect Jared Triolo to see most of the opportunities at first base, with Billy Cook or Bryan Reynolds potentially operating as the backup option. The Pirates acquired Horwitz earlier in the offseason via a trade from the Cleveland Guardians. Last season with Toronto, the 27-year-old posted a .265/.357/.433 slash line with 19 doubles and 12 home runs. He should see most of the starting opportunities at first base when he returns.

Spencer Horwitz To Miss Time In Spring Training With Wrist Injury

Sources tell Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Andrew Destin that Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz (wrist) will miss time in spring training with a right-wrist injury. The severity of Horwitz's wrist injury is unclear, but it will certainly put his status up in the air for Opening Day in late March. The 27-year-old was dealt from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Cleveland Guardians and then to the Pirates this offseason. If healthy, he's expected to serve as the Bucs' primary first baseman in 2025 after hitting .265/.357/.433 with a .790 OPS, 12 home runs, 40 RBI and 46 runs scored in 381 plate appearances over 97 games in Toronto in 2024. If Horwitz's wrist injury is serious enough to keep him out for the start of the regular season, it's possible that Jared Triolo will slide across the diamond and start at first base for Pittsburgh. Stay tuned for more information on the severity of Horwitz's injury.
