Endy Rodriguez Might Have to Play Second Base or Outfield

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez (elbow) might have to move to second base or the outfield this season, according to Kevin Gorman of TribLIVE. Rodriguez was developed as a catcher and made his MLB debut in 2023, but injuries limited him to just 18 minor league games and 18 major league games across the last two years. At the big-league level in 2025, he slashed just .173/.246/.250 with an 8.8% walk rate, a 24.6% strikeout rate, and 38 wRC+. It's not like his glove was enough to justify putting his bat in the lineup, either. He threw out just two of 10 baserunners and finished the year with -2 FRV. As Gorman notes, Joey Bart and Henry Davis are Pittsburgh's primary catchers right now. The spoils of the starting role will belong to whichever backstop has a better spring, while the other catcher slots into a backup role. That doesn't leave much clarity for Rodriguez and fellow depth catcher Rafael Flores. Presumably, only one of Rodriguez or Flores can make the team. In the past, first base would have been a natural Plan B for either player. However, Pittsburgh is all set there with Spencer Horwitz and Ryan O'Hearn, forcing the club to get creative. As of now, Gorman projects that it'll be Rodriguez who makes the team. He has a little more defensive versatility and is expected to make appearances at second base and in the outfield. His disappointing results at the plate leave him off the fantasy radar in most leagues.

Endy Rodriguez Has Season-Ending Surgery

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez (wrist) underwent successful season-ending surgery this week, according to Alex Stumpf. This is a shame considering Rodriguez underwent Tommy John surgery last year. He only managed to play in 18 games for the Pirates this season, but figures to be ready for spring training. The Pirates do have high hopes for Rodriguez who does offer good upside with the bat. However, he figures to compete for playing time with Joey Bart and Henry Davis for playing time in Pittsburgh next season.

Endy Rodriguez Feeling Residual Soreness In Elbow

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie catcher Endy Rodriguez (elbow) has been doing low-level strengthening and range-of-motion exercises in Florida as he recovers from right elbow inflammation. Elbow issues have plagued the 25-year-old throughout his career, and he has been on the 60-day injured list since the middle of June. Rodriguez is currently dealing with some residual soreness, and his surgeon, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, would like to take a slower, concerted effort before performing any more procedures. Rodriguez was a former prospect, but hasn't been healthy enough to make an extended big-league impression. He slashed .173/.246/.250 with no home runs and two RBI in 57 plate appearances this season with the Pirates before his injury.

Endy Rodriguez Exits with Trainer

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez (elbow) was forced to make an early exit from Friday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Rodriguez exited the contest with right elbow discomfort while warming up in the second inning. It's never good to see a player leave with an elbow injury. The expectation is that Rodriguez will undergo further testing to determine the severity of the elbow issue. Henry Davis took over behind the plate and should see additional playing time if Rodriguez ends up on the shelf.

Endy Rodriguez Comes Off 10-Day Injured List

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Wednesday that they reinstated catcher/first baseman Endy Rodriguez (finger) from the 10-day injured list and placed catcher Joey Bart (concussion) on the seven-day concussion injured list in a corresponding move. Rodriguez isn't in the starting lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the hosting Arizona Diamondbacks, but he figures to split playing time with Henry Davis behind the plate for the Bucs while Bart recovers from his head injury. The 25-year-old switch-hitting Dominican backstop played in eight games with Triple-A Indianapolis during his rehab assignment and went 4-for-26 (.154) with two home runs, four RBI and four runs scored. Most of Rodriguez's playing time came at first base before his injury, but that's probably going to change now that Spencer Horwitz is back.

Endy Rodriguez Playing Catch

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman/catcher Endy Rodriguez (finger) has shed his cast and has been cleared to begin playing catch. Rodriguez has been recovering from a laceration on his right index finger since April. It appears the 24-year-old has progressed well and can begin ramping up his baseball activity. Through his first 15 games of the campaign, Rodriguez held a .178/.260/.244 slash line with three doubles, two RBI, and a 12:5 K:BB. Under the hood, he generated a solid 45.5% hard-hit rate and was able to draw walks at a 10.0% rate. If he continues to progress well, Rodriguez could be cleared to embark on a rehab assignment before the end of the month. When he is cleared to return to Pittsburgh, fantasy managers should expect Rodriguez to compete for time at first base and as the No. 2 backstop behind Joey Bart.

Endy Rodriguez Lands On Injured List

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed catcher Endy Rodriguez (finger) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday after he exited Monday's contest against the Washington Nationals with a right index-finger laceration that required stitches, sources told MLB.com's Alex Stumpf. In a corresponding move, the Pirates recalled right-hander Chase Shugart from the minors. Shugart threw 3 2/3 scoreless relief innings for the Bucs in his first stint with the team. With Rodriguez now on the IL and Joey Bart still nursing a back injury, Henry Davis got the start behind the dish on Tuesday and went 1-for-3 in the 3-0 loss. The fact that the Pirates didn't call up an additional catcher suggests that Bart is getting close to a return. The 24-year-old switch-hitting Rodriguez started the year 8-for-45 (.178) with no home runs, three doubles and two RBI and will be a backup catcher/first baseman when he returns from the IL.

Endy Rodriguez Removed Early On Monday

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez (finger) was forced to exit early during Monday's game against the Washington Nationals. Rodriguez was removed after being hit in the wrist by a deflected ball. Ouch, the Pirates can't afford to lose another catcher with Joey Bart (back) injured as well. The team is calling Rodriguez day-to-day with a right index finger laceration. Henry Davis took over behind the plate on Monday and figures to see more playing time with the team shorthanded at catcher. It doesn't sound like Rodriguez or Bart will require a trip to the injured list.

Endy Rodriguez Not In Saturday's Lineup

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher/first baseman Endy Rodriguez is not in the starting lineup on Saturday afternoon against the Miami Marlins. Rodriguez started the first two games of the season at first base. Instead, the Pirates will turn to Jared Triolo to cover first base and will bat seventh. Across his first two games of the season, Rodriguez has gone 0-for-6 with a 2:4 BB:K. Fantasy managers should expect Rodriguez to return to the starting nine on Sunday afternoon, for the final game of the four-game set against the Marlins. Triolo held a .216/.296/.315 slash line across 125 MLB contests last season in Pittsburgh. He went deep 10 times and went deep nine times. Given his offensive inconsistencies, he is not worth targeting in DFS facing Miami right-hander Valente Bellozo.

Endy Rodriguez Expected To Begin Season With Triple-A

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez is expected to begin the season at the Triple-A level. Alex Stumpf of MLB.com noted that the team wants to give Rodriguez at-bats on a daily basis. With Joey Bart slated to be Pittsburgh's primary backstop, Rodriguez will be able to further his development with more playing time in the minor leagues. Last season, Rodriguez was only able to play in 10 minor league games due to an elbow injury. He made his MLB debut during the 2023 season and posted a .220/.284/.328 line with seven doubles and three home runs across 57 contests. He held a 17:49 BB:K. Through 77 career games at Triple-A, the 24-year-old has posted a .285/.362/.450 slash line with 19 doubles and eight home runs. He is worth monitoring in NL-only leagues as he should return to the majors later in 2025.
