Henry Davis News
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Henry Davis will join Endy Rodriguez and Jason Delay as a catcher for spring training next year, according to general manager Ben Cherington. Davis, the No. 1 overall pick in 2021, was promoted to the big leagues on June 19 as a right fielder because they believed his bat could help. But Cherington said the Pirates were "very clear" in an exit interview with Davis that he is going to report to spring training next year as a catcher. The 24-year-old is going to need to improve defensively, but it's a move that will surely boost his fantasy appeal going into Year 2 in the majors. In his first 62 games with the Bucs, Davis struggled at the plate with a .213/.302/.351 slash line with seven homers, 10 doubles, 24 RBI, three stolen bases and 27 runs scored in 255 plate appearances.
The Pittsburgh Pirates reinstated catcher/outfielder Henry Davis (hand) from the 10-day injured list ahead of Friday's 7-5 loss to the New York Yankees. They optioned infielder Vinny Capra to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Davis was not in the lineup upon activation against right-hander Gerrit Cole, which was somewhat of a surprise given he went 8-for-13 with a home run in his four rehab games. Even so, fantasy managers can expect him to operate as Pittsburgh's primary right fielder going forward. The 23-year-old former No. 1 overall pick strained his right hand in late August, but he'll look end his rookie year on a high note. Davis is slashing .213/.306/.339 with five home runs, 18 RBI, and three stolen bases in 209 plate appearances overall.
Pittsburgh Pirates catcher/outfielder Henry Davis (hand) might begin a rehab assignment at some point this weekend. The 23-year-old handled batting practice a week ago and about looks ready for the next step in his recovery from a right hand strain. It's been a up-and-down rookie year for Davis while slashing .213/.306/.339 with five home runs, 18 RBI, and 24 runs scored, but he could play every day in the outfield upon his return with Andrew McCutchen (Achilles) done for 2023. The 2021 No. 1 overall pick's appeal is far more pronounced in dynasty settings, but Davis should be kept on redraft watchlists while the fantasy playoffs approach. Jack Suwinski and Connor Joe have been sharing time in right field during Davis' absence.
