Joey Bart News
San Francisco Giants catcher Joey Bart, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft, appears unlikely to make the team's Opening Day roster out of spring training and is out of minor-league options. As a result, it makes him a candidate to be traded or dropped from the 40-man roster in late March. The 27-year-old backstop has hit a disappointing .219/.288/.335 with 11 home runs, 38 RBI and 178 strikeouts in 162 games played for the Gigantes in four seasons since making his big-league debut in 2020. He dealt with a groin injury last year and played in only 30 games, hitting .207 in 95 trips to the plate. Patrick Bailey took over the starting duties behind the dish in 2023, and Tom Murphy was brought in over the winter to serve as his backup. Bart's dynasty/keeper appeal is waning, but perhaps a change of scenery will do him some good.
San Francisco Giants catcher Joey Bart (groin) played through right-groin tightness in April, but he started to experience a similar issue on his left side on May 17, and an MRI exam showed a Grade 1 strain, causing him to land on the 10-day injured list on May 19. Bart was scheduled to start baseball activities in San Francisco on Monday and will start running in the coming days. In his absence, prospect Patrick Bailey and Rule 5 draft pick Blake Sabol are splitting catching duties behind the plate for the Giants. Barring a setback, Bart has a chance to be back before the end of May, but he had been a disappointment at the plate so far for fantasy managers. The 26-year-old has no home runs and is hitting just .231 (18-for-78) in his first 26 games in 2023.
The San Francisco Giants placed catcher Joey Bart (groin) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 18) on Friday with a left-groin strain and recalled former first-round catcher Patrick Bailey from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. The team also designated outfielder Cal Stevenson for assignment and placed outfielder Heliot Ramos (oblique) on the 60-day injured list. The 26-year-old Bart has hit just .231 (18-for-78) with five doubles, no home runs, four RBI and eight runs scored in 26 games played this year. With him out, Bailey, the team's No. 11 prospect per MLB Pipeline, and Blake Sabol figure to share catching duties in San Fran. Bailey was hitting a weak .196 with two home runs and four RBI in 51 at-bats for Sacramento.

Arguably the best offensive catching prospect in baseball a title that may soon be taken by the Orioles' Adley Rutschman Bart had a rough introduction to the Major Leagues in 2020. His 37% strikeout rate through the first 33 games of his career is a concern especially since he struggled to make contact with pitches in the strike zone almost 10% less often than the MLB average. Bart can handle a fastball but he really struggled with off-speed pitches and breaking balls last year. He'll need additional reps to correct this issue, which means he probably won't be ready to take away significant playing time from incumbent Buster Posey until mid-2021. The good news is that once he's a little more polished as a hitter, Bart's plus power potential should shine through. Even during his MLB struggles last season, he generated a slightly-above-average Exit Velocity and had a 48% Hard Hit rate, which was well above the league average of 35%. Unless Posey enters the year on the disabled list, Bart is a name you'll want to stick in your back pocket for a little later in the season.
