Luisangel Acuña News
New York Mets middle infield prospect Luisangel Acuna has been off to a sluggish start for Triple-A Syracuse. Acuna, who is the brother of Ronald Acuna Jr. was the big name acquired for Max Scherzer last season and hit .294 with nine home runs, 63 RBI, 57 stolen bases and 93 runs in 121 games with Double-A Binghamton and Double-A Frisco. Thus far for Syracuse, Acuna is still adjusting as he hitting just .211 with one homer, five RBI and seven RBI. Acuna has shown his ability on the basepaths, but he still needs to hit better offensively to make a big mark at the next level. For now, he remains best suited on the waiver, but could see a promotion to the big leagues before the end of the season, if he improves in the batter's box.
New York Mets shortstop prospect Luisangel Acuna is showing off the speed at Triple-A, but not much power yet. The 22-year-old hit a home run in his first game of the season, however, has not hit one since. Ronald's brother went 2-for-5 with a single, a triple, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored for Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, bringing his season slashline to a pedestrian .211/.253/.310. Acuna has stolen seven bases so far this year and 40 or more each of the past three seasons. Francisco Lindor is blocking his way to the majors at shortstop though, but he could make it to Queens as a second baseman or outfielder. He's not forcing the issue with his performance at the plate, however.
The New York Mets optioned infield prospect Luisangel Acuna and left-hander Kolton Ingram to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday and reassigned outfielder Drew Gilbert, right-handers Eric Orze, Cam Robinson, Christian Scott and Mike Vasil, catcher Kevin Parada, infielder Jett Williams and left-hander Danny Young to minor-league camp. Acuna, 21, is one of the Mets' top prospects, but he will begin the 2024 season in the minors, as expected. He was the headliner in the deal with the Rangers last year that sent Max Scherzer to Texas. The Venezuelan infielder hit a combined .294/.359/.410 with nine home runs, 63 RBI, 57 stolen bases and 93 runs in 121 games with Double-A Binghamton and Double-A Frisco. If Acuna, one of the younger brothers of Ronald Acuna Jr., tears it up at Syracuse this year, he could make his MLB debut later this year.

New York Mets infield prospect Luisangel Acuna, the 21-year-old younger brother of 2023 NL MVP Ronald Acuna Jr., endured two very different Double-A stints with two different organizations a season ago. Acuna raked with a .315 average, seven home runs, 42 stolen bases, and an .830 OPS in 84 games at Double-A Frisco before being dealt to the Mets as part of the Max Scherzer trade. He went on to hit just .243 with two home runs, 15 stolen bases, and a .621 OPS across 37 games with Double-A Binghamton. While he has displayed some pop in the minors to go along with his elite speed, his power projection at the MLB level is weakened by his 5-foot-8 frame. With Francisco Lindor set in stone at shortstop in Queens, Acuna received more reps at second base in 2023 and will likely see his first taste of Triple-A in 2024. Whether he can parlay that into a big-league look in 2024 remains to be seen but he will have to beat out stable veteran Jeff McNeil at the keystone or perhaps get a look in center field given his footspeed. A high average and elite speed would be enough for Acuna to hit the fantasy radar if he can gain second-base eligibility upon his big-league debut.
