Corbin Burnes News
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Corbin Burnes had a poor showing in his second spring training start as the White Sox beat the Brewers 5-2. The ace pitched 3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk with no strikeouts. He has only pitched 5 1/3 innings this spring, but Burnes has a 6.75 ERA to this point. Fantasy managers shouldn't worry, as he should still be a top fantasy pitching option after going 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 30.5% strikeout rate in 202 IP in 2022.
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Corbin Burnes is expected to pitch two innings in his Cactus League debut on Wednesday against the Texas Rangers. It will also be Burnes' first time working with new catcher William Contreras in a game setting. RotoBaller's No. 2-ranked starting pitcher has made the All-Star team in each of the last two seasons and went 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA (3.14 FIP), 0.96 WHIP and 30.5 percent strikeout rate in a career-high 202 innings over 33 starts for the Brew Crew last year. He's as safe as they come in fantasy from a pitching perspective, but his relationship with the organization was tarnished this offseason when he went to a salary arbitration case and lost.
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Corbin Burnes said he wishes the Brewers would have handled his salary arbitration hearing on Wednesday with a little more respect. "There's no denying that the relationship is definitely hurt," Burnes said. Milwaukee will pay Burnes $10.01 million in 2023 instead of the $10.75 million salary he requested. It's business, and we're sure Burnes will eventually get over it. The 28-year-old has made the All-Star team in back-to-back seasons and has become one of the best pitchers in baseball after winning the National League Cy Young in 2021 and following it up with a 2.94 ERA and NL-leading 243 strikeouts last year. Regardless of how much he's making in 2023, he should be considered a top-five fantasy ace.

It was not reasonable to expect a repeat of the Cy Young season Burnes gave us in 2021, and indeed that repeat did not come to fruition. Burnes' lost more than half of a point on the ERA and saw his strikeout rate drop five points. Despite those losses, Burnes still delivered an "ace" season, putting up a 3.07 ERA with a 0.97 WHIP and a 30.5% K% across his 33 starts. There were no changes to his pitch mix, and his cutter remained one of the game's best pitches, racking up a superb 17.4% swinging-strike rate. A lot of the bloating in the ERA came from a five-start stretch later in the year where he put up a 5.29 ERA while giving up a very unusually high home rate for him (1.7 HR/9 over that stretch). Even during that bad stretch, he was posting a K%-BB% above 20%, which is great. There are no good reasons to doubt Burnes is still one of the game's best, and he can be drafted with confidence to anchor your fantasy team's rotation in 2023 - you might even get a slight discount on him this season!
