Corbin Burnes News
One executive has speculated that the Los Angeles Dodgers could make an attempt to land both Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes and shortstop Willy Adames in the same deal this offseason. Both Burnes and Adames are eligible for free agency next offseason. The Dodgers are fully expected to pursue starting pitching in the offseason with Walker Buehler (elbow) coming off Tommy John surgery and with Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) on the open market. LA is likely to pursue both Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani (elbow), the two big-ticket free-agent options this winter, but Ohtani won't be able to take the mound at all in 2024. The Brewers are heading into a rebuilding phase and are listening on all of their players.
Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes explained why he and the club have not had any contract extension talks as he approaches his final season of club control. Speaking to Foul Territory TV, Burnes essentially explained that his ace-level results over the last few seasons priced him out of the small-market Brewers' range and both he and the club separately figured there was little point in discussing a short-term deal or a low-dollar figure offer just one year before free agency. As a result, Burnes' name will swirl in trade rumors this winter after he worked to a 3.39 ERA in 32 starts in 2023 while posting sub-3.00 ERA figures from 2020-2022. The Chicago Cubs are one club that has been rumored to have trade interest in the 29-year-old.
Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes will take the ball for the Brew Crew in Game 1 of the wild-card series on Tuesday against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. He'll be opposed by rookie right-hander Brandon Pfaadt. With Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) now unavailable to pitch in this series due to injury, the Brewers will need Burnes and Freddy Peralta to step up. The 28-year-old Burnes has been solid all year for Milwaukee, going 10-8 with a 3.39 ERA (3.81 FIP), league-low 1.07 WHIP, 66 walks and 200 strikeouts in 193 2/3 innings over 32 starts. The three-time All-Star (each of the last three years) allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits (one homer) while walking just two and striking out 11 in 13 innings in his two starts against Arizona this year.

It was not reasonable to expect a repeat of the Cy Young season Burnes gave us in 2021, and indeed that repeat did not come to fruition. Burnes' lost more than half of a point on the ERA and saw his strikeout rate drop five points. Despite those losses, Burnes still delivered an "ace" season, putting up a 3.07 ERA with a 0.97 WHIP and a 30.5% K% across his 33 starts. There were no changes to his pitch mix, and his cutter remained one of the game's best pitches, racking up a superb 17.4% swinging-strike rate. A lot of the bloating in the ERA came from a five-start stretch later in the year where he put up a 5.29 ERA while giving up a very unusually high home rate for him (1.7 HR/9 over that stretch). Even during that bad stretch, he was posting a K%-BB% above 20%, which is great. There are no good reasons to doubt Burnes is still one of the game's best, and he can be drafted with confidence to anchor your fantasy team's rotation in 2023 - you might even get a slight discount on him this season!
