Paul Sewald, Kevin Ginkel, Ryan Thompson Could All See Save Chances

The Arizona Diamondbacks don't have a clear idea of who their closer will be in 2026, but manager Torey Lovullo mentioned relievers Paul Sewald, Kevin Ginkel, and Ryan Thompson as potential options in the ninth inning, according to Alex D'Agostino of Sports Illustrated. Sewald was the team's closer in 2023 as they made a run to the World Series, and Ginkel and Thompson were the only incumbent veterans heading into camp before Arizona brought Sewald back. Lovullo wants a defined closer, if possible, and he's stated his preference for having that arm repeatedly. The skipper also said he will consider "migrating" any young arm capable of doing so into a high-leverage role with both Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk starting the year on the injured list. None of Arizona's current options are great, so it seems more likely that the D-backs enter 2026 with a closer-by-committee situation. It's a situation that fantasy managers should avoid, if possible.

Zac Gallen Chose Diamondbacks Deal Over Multi-Year Offers

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen said that he chose to re-sign for one year despite having several multi-year offers on the table from other organizations, according to Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com. "I've always bet on myself," Gallen told the media. "I felt like I owed it to myself, owed to my family, I even owed it to the organization, to the fans here to come back and have a good year." Gallen's free agency lasted into spring training, as he didn't re-sign with the Diamondbacks until Friday. The veteran starter is coming off a 33-start season, during which he posted a 4.50 FIP and 4.12 xFIP. He also had 8.20 K/9, 3.09 BB/9, and 1.45 HR/9 with a 43.6% home run rate. He slots right back into the Diamondbacks' No. 2 starter spot behind Merrill Kelly.

Tyler Locklear Will Miss At Least Three More Months

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Tyler Locklear (elbow, shoulder) is expected to be sidelined through at least the middle of May or early June, manager Torey Lovullo told Jack Sommers of SI.com. Locklear hasn't played since September when he landed on the injured list with left elbow inflammation. The young corner infielder was traded from Seattle to Arizona at the trade deadline last year, but he injured himself within the coming months after a collision on the field. He ultimately needed season-ending surgery on both his shoulder and elbow, and now, he's going to miss the start of the 2026 season. That's rough news for a fringe roster player who had been looking for any opportunity to make his mark. He struggled across 31 big-league games last year, slashing .175/.267/.262 with three home runs, an 8.6% walk rate, a 37.1% strikeout rate, and 52 wRC+. Presumably, he'll end up on the 60-day injured list, creating less competition at first base. Veteran first baseman Carlos Santana should crack the starting lineup while Ildemaro Vargas and Tim Tawa offer depth at the position.

Merrill Kelly  • SP  •  Diamondbacks

Merrill Kelly to Start on Opening Day for Arizona

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that right-hander Merrill Kelly will be the team's Opening Day starter, per Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic. Kelly, 37, began last season with the D-backs before being traded to the Texas Rangers. In 32 total starts (184 innings), he went 12-9 with a 3.52 ERA (3.76 FIP), 1.11 WHIP, and 167:48 K:BB. Kelly was much better in Arizona before the trade, recording a 3.22 ERA (3.58 FIP) and 1.06 WHIP with 121 K's and 38 free passes in 128 2/3 frames over 22 starts. Kelly doesn't have overpowering stuff and is nearing the end of his career, but he can still be effective as a starter, as he frequently uses his stellar changeup to generate weak contact. In addition to regularly getting weak contact, Kelly has excellent control, with a 7.2% walk rate in his seven MLB seasons. Kelly can provide some stability to the back end of a rotation in deep fantasy leagues. He's ranked at RotoBaller as the No. 64 starting pitcher in fantasy.

Jordan Lawlar  • SS  •  Diamondbacks

Jordan Lawlar Could Earn Everyday Playing Time Early in 2026

Arizona Diamondbacks infielder/outfielder Jordan Lawlar struggled in his first taste of big-league action in 2025, hitting .182/.257/.288 with zero home runs, five RBI, nine runs scored, and two stolen bases across 74 plate appearances. The 23-year-old also posted below-average defensive metrics while bouncing around between third base, second base, and shortstop. Over the offseason, Arizona announced that the majority of Lawlar's 2026 Spring Training reps would come in the outfield. The position change may end up leading Lawlar to an early-season starting role in the big leagues, as star Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll (hand) underwent surgery on a broken hamate bone on Wednesday and may miss the start of the season as a result. Arizona outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (knee) will definitely be sidelined for Opening Day, so the team has a significant need for help in the outfield. Lawlar mashed Triple-A pitching to a .313/.403/.564 line with 11 home runs, 52 RBI, 50 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases across 300 plate appearances in 2025. With a current average draft position of pick 336, Lawlar could be worth a late-round dart throw in fantasy drafts heading into 2026.

Zac Gallen  • SP  •  Diamondbacks

Diamondbacks Re-Sign Zac Gallen

The Arizona Diamondbacks re-signed right-hander Zac Gallen for around $22 million on Friday night, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. He rejected Arizona's $22.025 million qualifying offer back in November, but he'll end up making around the same amount in 2026 as he looks to bounce back in a familiar environment. Gallen will return to the desert after the 30-year-old veteran had a career-high 4.83 ERA (4.50 FIP) and 1.26 WHIP with 175 strikeouts and 66 walks in 192 innings over 33 starts in his walk year in 2025. His 31 home runs were easily a career high as well. In addition to being much more hittable last year, Gallen's strikeout rate fell to a career-low 21.5%. Gallen's cutter and sinker, which he threw more of, were just not effective enough. He could rebound by keeping the ball in the yard more often, but there's also a good chance we've already seen peak Gallen.

Adrian Del Castillo Held Back by Calf Issue

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Adrian Del Castillo (left calf) "has been off to the side" and is absent from several catching drills as spring training gets underway, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. The 26-year-old is dealing with a left calf issue and will be delayed in his return to drills. Manager Torey Lovullo confirmed that Del Castillo will resume catching once he's healthy, as the team isn't considering a position switch for the young backstop. He spent 28 games at designated hitter and five at catcher last year, posting 0.2 FRM and 1 FRV behind the dish at the big league level in 2025. Holding the bat in his hands, he slashed .242/.290/.392 with four home runs, a 6.1% walk rate, a 35.9% strikeout rate, and 87 wRC+. Del Castillo is not a lock to make the 26-man roster, since the Snakes already have Gabriel Moreno and James McCann atop their depth chart.

Ryan Waldschmidt  • CF  •  Diamondbacks

Ryan Waldschmidt has Easier Path to Make Opening Day Roster?

Arizona Diamondbacks top outfield prospect Ryan Waldschmidt could have an easier path to crack the Opening Day roster following the injury to Corbin Carroll (hand). With the team's top outfielder on the shelf with a fractured hamate bone and in serious danger of missing the start of the season, Waldschmidt could emerge as a top replacement if he has a productive spring training. Entering camp, Waldschmidt was identified as a potential candidate to make the Opening Day roster, and now, with a starting outfielder injured, his path becomes much clearer. The Kentucky product joined the Diamondbacks in the 2024 MLB Draft and quickly progressed through the system last summer. Through 134 games (shared between High-A and Double-A), Waldschmidt held a .289/.419/.473 line with 18 home runs and 29 stolen bases. Even though he does not have experience at Triple-A, a strong showing in camp could be enough to earn a spot in the Opening Day lineup.

Corbin Carroll  • RF  •  Diamondbacks

Corbin Carroll has Surgery on his Hand

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll (hand) had surgery on Wednesday on his hand after breaking the hamate bone on his right (non-throwing) hand while taking a swing during live batting practice on Tuesday, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. It's not clear how long Carroll will be out, but in a best-case scenario, he could return to action around Opening Day in late March. He will not be able to play for Team USA in next month's World Baseball Classic. The 25-year-old has been a key player for Arizona since making his MLB debut in August of 2022, winning National League Rookie of the Year honors in 2023 while helping the team get to the World Series. The two-time All-Star hit .259/.343/.541 with an OPS+ of 140 in 2025 while leading baseball with 17 triples. Carroll's fantasy stock takes a bit of a hit with this news, but he's still considered a top-25 overall player at RotoBaller since he might not miss much time at all to begin the season.

Diamondbacks Bring Back Paul Sewald on One-Year Deal

The Arizona Diamondbacks signed right-handed reliever Paul Sewald to a one-year, $1.5 million deal on Thursday, pending a physical, according to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic. Sewald was Arizona's closer in 2023 and had a career-high 34 saves that year, but he lost the role the following year before pitching with the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers last season. The 35-year-old veteran only threw 19 2/3 innings in 2025 due to injuries and posted a 4.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, two saves, 20 strikeouts, and six walks in 22 appearances with Cleveland and Detroit. The D-backs will be thin in the bullpen to begin the 2026 campaign with both Justin Martinez (elbow) and A.J. Puk (elbow) on the shelf, which could open the door for the declining Sewald to see some save opportunities. At best, he'll be a desperation source of save chances for fantasy managers in deeper leagues.

Corbin Carroll Suffers Broken Hamate Bone, in Danger of Missing Opening Day

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll (hand) suffered a broken hamate bone during live batting practice on Tuesday and is set to miss significant time this spring. Given this injury, Carroll's status for Opening Day is now in serious question. The star outfielder is a consensus first-round selection in all fantasy formats. Last summer, the former top prospect enjoyed a massive power surge, hitting a career-high 31 long balls with a .259/.343/.541 line. The 25-year-old also swiped 32 bags while generating an elite .372 xwOBA, .529 xSLG, and a 49.9% hard-hit rate, all of which are well above the average marks. Additionally, Carroll drew walks at a stong 10.4% rate, boosting his value in points leagues. With Carroll potentially at danger of missing Opening Day, Jordan Lawlar could carve out a prominent role early in the campaign in the outfield.

Pavin Smith  • 1B  •  Diamondbacks

Pavin Smith to Primarily Play First Base in 2026

According to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith is expected to play primarily at first base in the upcoming season. In 2025, Smith drew 36 starts at first base while seeing a much higher 47 starts at the DH spot. In 2024, Smith spent most of his time in the outfield, but now appears to be moving to first base for the foreseeable future. Last summer, the 30-year-old was typically deployed on the strong side of a platoon and held a .258/.362/.434 slash line with eight home runs and two stolen bases. However, he generated a strong 46.1% hard-hit rate with an 11.7% barrel rate, suggesting he could see some positive regression in the power department. With Carlos Santana joining the Diamondbacks, managers should expect Smith to continue to operate as a platoon bat and hold solid streaming upside in deeper leagues.

A.J. Puk Expects to be Back Before July

Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed reliever A.J. Puk (elbow) said he would "love" to be back by early May, but that's unlikely to happen, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. Puk does expect to be back before July, though. Meanwhile, fellow high-leverage reliever Justin Martinez (elbow) is targeting a late-August return in 2026. Puk, 30, underwent an internal-brace procedure on his left elbow last June, which isn't as serious as Tommy John surgery. Barring a setback, Puk should return before the All-Star break and get a shot at save chances before Martinez makes his season debut. Before his elbow injury in 2025, Puk had a 3.38 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, four saves, 12 strikeouts, and two walks in just eight innings out of the bullpen. The 6-foot-7 hurler has lots of upside as a high-leverage reliever, but durability issues make him a question mark in fantasy baseball.

Corbin Burnes Hoping to Return Around All-Star Break

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes (elbow) said that he hopes to rejoin the team's starting rotation around the All-Star break as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. Burnes is also expecting to throw off a mound before the end of spring training as he continues to recover from TJ surgery that he had last June. The 31-year-old four-time All-Star and former National League Cy Young winner made the All-Star team from 2021 to 2024 but then made only 11 starts for Arizona in 2025 due to his right-elbow injury. When on the mound, though, he was his usual dominant self, posting a 2.66 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 63 strikeouts and 26 walks in 64 1/3 innings. Fantasy managers shouldn't just expect Burnes to return around the All-Star break and be his former dominant self right away.

Justin Martinez Tentatively Targeting an August Return

Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed reliever Justin Martinez (elbow) said he's tentatively targeting an August return from elbow surgery, according to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic. Martinez is recovering from Tommy John surgery that he had last June, although he did start a throwing program in the middle of last month. The 24-year-old Dominican hurler broke out in 2024 with a 2.48 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, eight saves, 91 K's, and 36 walks in 72 2/3 innings for the Snakes and was their primary closer last year before injuring his right elbow. Martinez had a 4.11 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, five saves, 22 K's, and 12 walks in 15 1/3 innings in 2025 before he was shut down. Until Martinez and left-hander A.J. Puk (elbow) return in 2026, Kevin Ginkel could get the majority of save opportunities in the desert, with Ryan Thompson and Kade Strowd potentially also in the mix for saves.

Ryne Nelson  • SP  •  Diamondbacks

Ryne Nelson Preparing for Full Season as a Starter

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson was the team's most consistent starting pitcher last year, compiling a 3.39 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 132:41 K:BB, and 127 ERA+ in 154 innings over 33 appearances (23 starts). Nelson wasn't in the Opening Day rotation, but he quickly joined the rotation after Corbin Burnes' season-ending Tommy John surgery in May. Arizona didn't let Nelson throw 100 pitches in a start until Aug. 5 last year as the team looked to keep him healthy. According to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert, Nelson made it a priority this offseason to get physically stronger so he can "handle the rigors of making 30 or more starts." He's added muscle and reduced some body fat while also working to develop his slider and curveball. The 28-year-old should be a rotation lock for at least the first half of 2026, and he could become more of a top-of-the-rotation arm for the D-backs if his secondary offerings take a step forward.

Andrew Saalfrank Undergoes Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery

Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed reliever Andrew Saalfrank (shoulder) posted a photo of himself on Monday on his Instagram account and announced that he underwent shoulder surgery, according to Alex D'Agostino of Sports Illustrated. MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports that Saalfrank will miss the entire 2026 season. The 28-year-old southpaw was a key bullpen piece during the team's 2023 run to the World Series. The former sixth-round pick made a career-high 28 relief appearances for the Snakes last year, posting a 1.24 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, his first three career saves, five holds, 19 strikeouts, and 10 walks in 29 innings pitched. Saalfrank's injury is another blow to a banged-up Diamondbacks bullpen that will also be without relievers Justin Martinez (elbow) and A.J. Puk (elbow) for a good chunk of the 2026 season.

Jordan Lawlar  • SS  •  Diamondbacks

Jordan Lawlar to Mostly Work in the Outfield

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen confirmed on Thursday that the majority of work for Jordan Lawlar will come in the outfield this spring, but the team isn't closing off infield work for him, according to Jody Jackson of The Arizona Republic. The D-backs previously stated that the 23-year-old former top prospect would see work in center field in spring training, but that was before they traded utility man Blaze Alexander to the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. Alexander's departure seemingly opens up playing time at third base going into the 2026 season, but Arizona has their sights set on Lawlar trying his hand in the outfield. There is also a need in the outfield, though, with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (knee) injured and Jake McCarthy no longer in town. Lawlar has only played in 42 big-league games for Arizona and hasn't lived up to his prospect hype, slashing .165/.241/.237 with no homers, five RBI, and 37 K's in 108 plate appearances. His bat showed promise in September, though, giving hope to fantasy managers in dynasty/keeper leagues that he can be a post-hype breakout type in 2026.

Kade Strowd  • RP  •  Diamondbacks

Diamondbacks Pick Up Kade Strowd, Two Minor-Leaguers

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired pitchers Kade Strowd and Wellington Aracena, and infielder Jose Mejia from the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday in exchange for infielder Blaze Alexander, a source told The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro. Strowd is the primary return for the D-backs in this swap. The 28-year-old right-hander was a former 12th-round selection by the O's in 2019 out of West Virginia. Strowd was impressive in his MLB debut last year, recording a 1.71 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 24 punchouts and 13 walks in 26 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. He has a good chance to open the 2026 regular season in Arizona due to injuries to bullpen arms A.J. Puk (elbow) and Justin Martinez (elbow), and Strowd could be a sleeper for holds in deeper fantasy leagues in his sophomore campaign.

Corbin Burnes  • SP  •  Diamondbacks

No Setbacks for Corbin Burnes, Aiming for July Return

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes (elbow) has not had any setbacks during his rehab from Tommy John surgery, and the Diamondbacks' ace is still aiming to return in July of this year. "We put an aggressive timeline on it from the get-go. We were looking at the 12 1/2, 13-month mark. We're still on pace with that," Burnes said. It's the same timeline that the 31-year-old veteran gave back in late September, but it's still good news that he's on track after having right-elbow reconstruction in June of 2025. The four-time All-Star signed a six-year, $210 million contract with Arizona in December of 2024 but ended up only making 11 starts in his first year in the desert, posting a 2.66 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 63:26 K:BB in 64 1/3 innings. Before the injury, Burnes was one of the most consistent high-end starters in baseball over the previous five seasons. Fantasy managers can stash Burnes in an IL spot in 2026 in hopes of him being an ace in the second half, but expectations should be tempered as well.
