Diamondbacks Place Pavin Smith on 10-Day Injured List With Elbow Inflammation

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Monday that they placed infielder Pavin Smith (elbow) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to March 29) with left-elbow inflammation and recalled infielder Jose Fernandez from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Veteran Carlos Santana is starting at first base on Monday against the visiting Detroit Tigers and right-hander Justin Verlander, and he should see most of the playing time there with Smith on the injured list. Meanwhile, Ildemaro Vargas is the designated hitter and will bat eighth on Monday. Expect the Snakes to rotate at DH among Vargas, Tim Tawa, Fernandez, and Jorge Barrosa with Smith on the shelf for at least 10 days. Smith isn't dealing with any structural damage in his elbow, but it's something that has been bothering him since spring training. It's unclear if he'll return when eligible on April 8. In his two games played in the opening series against the Dodgers, Smith went 1-for-6 with an RBI, run scored, two walks, and two strikeouts at the plate.

Pavin Smith Returning to Lineup After Missing Opening Day

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith (elbow) is back in the starting lineup after taking batting practice for Friday's contest on the road against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers and right-hander Emmet Sheehan, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. Smith will serve as the team's designated hitter and will bat fifth after he missed the Opening Day loss on Thursday due to elbow soreness. An MRI exam on the 30-year-old left-handed hitter came back negative, allowing him to return to action. Smith is entering his seventh MLB season and has only had double-digit home runs once, back in 2021, when he had 11 homers and 49 RBI in 145 games played. That year was also the only time in six seasons that Smith has played in over 100 games. In 2026, he will compete for playing time between first base and designated hitter, and he's likely to continue to sit against lefties, which will keep his fantasy ceiling limited. Smith has never faced Sheehan in his MLB career.

Pavin Smith Scratched on Thursday Evening With Elbow Soreness

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith (elbow) has been scratched from the Opening Day lineup on Thursday evening against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers due to left-elbow soreness, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. The Diamondbacks don't believe that Smith's elbow injury is serious, so he could be right back in the lineup on Friday night in L.A. Tim Tawa will make the start at designated hitter in place of Smith for the Snakes versus Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Smith has earned regular at-bats in Arizona between first base and designated hitter after hitting .262/.357/.475 with an .832 OPS, 17 home runs, 64 RBI, and 62 runs scored in 147 games and 446 plate appearances over the last two seasons. However, he had a career-high 31.9% strikeout rate in 2025 and has just a .597 career OPS against left-handed pitchers. It's a limited fantasy ceiling for Smith. UPDATE: Smith will have an MRI exam on his left elbow on Friday.

Jordan Lawlar  • SS  •  Diamondbacks

Jordan Lawlar Starting in Left Field for Arizona on Opening Day

Arizona Diamondbacks infield/outfield prospect Jordan Lawlar is officially an Opening Day starter in 2026, batting ninth and playing left field for his team's first game of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lawlar has long been considered one of the Diamondbacks' top prospects, but he's struggled with injuries and hit just .182/.257/.288 with a 35.8% strikeout rate across 74 plate appearances after making his MLB debut in 2025. Lawlar also had some defensive issues while spending time at every infield position other than first base, leading the Diamondbacks to shift him to the outfield this spring. Still, Lawlar will not turn 24 years old until July and posted a .967 OPS across 300 Triple-A plate appearances in 2025. With Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (knee) currently working his way back from a torn ACL, Lawlar could have an extended run of everyday playing time to open 2026.

Ketel Marte  • 2B  •  Diamondbacks

Ketel Marte Active, Leading Off on Opening Day

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte (lower leg) is in the lineup and batting leadoff for his team's Opening Day matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday. Marte was scratched from Arizona's exhibition finale on Tuesday due to lower-leg soreness, but it appears the 32-year-old has avoided a serious issue. Marte is coming off an excellent 2025 season in which he hit .283/.376/.517 with 28 home runs, 72 RBI, 87 runs scored, and four stolen bases across 556 plate appearances. When healthy, Marte is arguably the premier second baseman in all of baseball. However, the veteran switch-hitter does have a fairly extensive injury history, reaching 600 plate appearances just twice in 11 MLB seasons. Fantasy managers can breathe a bit easier now that Marte is officially good to go for the start of 2026.

Paul Sewald  • RP  •  Diamondbacks

Paul Sewald the Favorite for Saves in Arizona?

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he'd be "foolish" not to consider veteran right-hander Paul Sewald for save chances this year with both Justin Martinez (elbow) and A.J. Puk (elbow) on the injured list to begin the 2026 season, according to 12 News' Cameron Cox. Lovullo mentioned Sewald's experience at the back of the bullpen in his career, as the 35-year-old has 86 saves over his nine major-league seasons with five different teams. He certainly isn't a slam-dunk saves candidate for the D-backs or for fantasy managers, though, as he posted a weak 4.58 ERA (4.66 FIP), a 1.22 WHIP, two saves, 20 strikeouts, and six walks in just 19 2/3 innings in 2025 with the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers. Sewald should be the Diamondbacks' first choice for save chances to begin the year, but Kevin Ginkel and Ryan Thompson could also be sprinkled in, and this could quickly evolve if Sewald struggles. Fantasy managers are better off staying away.

Justin Martinez  • RP  •  Diamondbacks

Justin Martinez Throwing on Flat Ground

Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed reliever Justin Martinez (elbow) is still throwing on flat ground up to 120 feet, according to Arizona Sports' Alex Weiner. Martinez underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on June 25 of last year and will open the 2026 season on the 60-day injured list. In a best-case scenario, he won't be available to return to high-leverage duties at the back end of Arizona's bullpen until the second half of the season. Fellow reliever A.J. Puk (elbow), who had an internal-brace procedure on his left arm, is slightly ahead of Martinez and is throwing short bullpen sessions. With both Martinez and Puk out for the first half of the season, veteran Paul Sewald might be the favorite for saves in the desert. The 24-year-old Martinez has 13 saves for Arizona in the last two seasons and is probably the team's preferred closer when healthy, but he could very well be eased back into high-leverage duties in the second half this year when he's back.

A.J. Puk  • RP  •  Diamondbacks

A.J. Puk Throwing Short Bullpens

Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed reliever A.J. Puk (elbow) has started throwing "shortbox bullpens," which means the catcher sets up closer to the pitcher, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. Puk is opening the 2026 regular season on the 60-day injured list after having an internal-brace procedure on his left elbow on June 20 of last year. Barring a setback, he's expected to return to the D-backs' bullpen around the All-Star break in mid-July. With fellow reliever Justin Martinez (elbow) also recovering from Tommy John surgery, Arizona's bullpen will be very vulnerable in the first half of the season. Veteran Paul Sewald could be the favorite for save opportunities, but manager Torey Lovullo could also mix and match with arms like Taylor Clarke, Jonathan Loaisiga, and Kevin Ginkel. It's truly a bullpen situation that fantasy managers should be looking to avoid, if at all possible.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr.  • LF  •  Diamondbacks

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to Play in Minor-League Games

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (knee) will play in minor-league games soon as a designated hitter, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. Gurriel has taken part in defensive drills and shagging, but he has yet to play the outfield in a game this spring. He's getting close to playing on defense, though. "Defensively is the next piece of the puzzle because you're gonna be chasing a baseball and you can't predict what your body's gonna need to do, what start-stop action you're gonna have with your lower half," manager Torey Lovullo said. "So we're getting very close to that." Gurriel tore the ACL in his right knee on Sept. 1 of last year and underwent surgery on Sept. 11. The 32-year-old veteran was hoping that he'd be ready for Opening Day, but that was never a realistic target date for his return. The D-backs are hoping that he can make his 2026 debut in early May. In mixed leagues, fantasy managers can leave Gurriel on the waiver wire to begin the season.

Ketel Marte Dealing With Lower-Leg Soreness

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte (leg) was scratched from the team's exhibition lineup on Tuesday as a precaution due to what manager Torey Lovullo called lower-leg soreness, according to Arizona Sports' Alex Weiner. "He just felt like 'I'm good, I don't need that at-bat. I'm a little bit sore. So, let me take this time off,'" Lovullo said. "So that made sense to me." There is no concern that Marte will miss Opening Day on Thursday. Fantasy managers should expect to have Marte available through the weekend as the 2026 regular season kicks off. As long as he's healthy, the 32-year-old Dominican infielder is a must-start in all fantasy formats as one of the best second basemen in the game. The three-time All-Star had 28 home runs and 72 RBI in 126 games in 2025 while slashing .283/.376/.517 in 556 plate appearances. Marte does have a history with injuries, but regardless, he's ranked as RotoBaller's No. 2 fantasy second baseman.

Merrill Kelly  • SP  •  Diamondbacks

Merrill Kelly to Pitch in Camp Game on Saturday

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly (back) will start the 2026 season on the 15-day injured list to build up his workload, and he will start a backfield game at the team's spring training complex this Saturday, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. If all goes according to plan, Kelly will make rehab outings for Triple-A Reno on April 3 and April 3 and then prepare to rejoin Arizona's starting rotation for his next appearance in his 2026 debut. The 37-year-old veteran pitched into the third inning in Monday's exhibition game against the Cleveland Guardians and got his pitch count up to 52. He allowed five runs, including two home runs, but he felt good about how his body felt. Kelly still has some work to do to fine-tune his mechanics, but barring a setback, he should be ready to return in April. He had a 3.52 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 167:48 K:BB in 184 innings over 32 starts in 2025 with Arizona and the Texas Rangers in his seventh year in the big leagues. Kelly is a savvy vet when healthy, but his fantasy upside is limited due to a below-average strikeout rate and increased injury volatility at his age.

Ketel Marte Scratched With Soreness, "No Concern" for Opening Day

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that second baseman Ketel Marte was scratched from Tuesday's exhibition game against the Cleveland Guardians due to soreness, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. There is "no concern" about Marte's status for Opening Day on Thursday. Ildemaro Vargas is starting at the keystone on Tuesday against Cleveland with Marte sitting out. The 32-year-old Dominican is the second-ranked fantasy second baseman at RotoBaller, behind only the Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. In a hitter-friendly home environment in Phoenix, the three-time All-Star has at least 25 home runs in each of the last three years while recording at least 72 RBI as well. Marte's 145 wRC+ led all qualified players at second base in 2025 for the second straight year. Additionally, he has hit .283 over the last three seasons for the D-backs. It doesn't get much better than Marte at the second base position in MLB.

Merrill Kelly Placed on 15-Day Injured List

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Merrill Kelly (back) will open the season on the 15-day injured list, manager Torey Lovullo told Alex D'Agostino of Diamondbacks on SI. The move was widely expected, but now confirmed by the Snakes' skipper as he announced the team's Opening Day rotation. Kelly entered camp as the Diamondbacks' projected No. 1 starter before dealing with the back issue. Now, he'll open the year on the IL. Lovullo didn't offer a timetable for his return, but the starter could pitch in a game as soon as April 7, if the team chooses to backdate his IL placement. Missing only 12 days would be a decent outcome for Kelly, who is looking to build on an impressive 2025 campaign that included a 3.76 FIP, 8.17 K/9, and 2.35 BB/9.

Paul Sewald  • RP  •  Diamondbacks

Is Paul Sewald a Late-Round Sleeper Saves Candidate in Arizona?

The Arizona Diamondbacks signed right-handed reliever Paul Sewald to a low-cost, one-year deal this past winter. The 35-year-old posted middling results across 19 2/3 innings split between the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers in 2025, pitching to a 4.58 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 20 strikeouts. However, Sewald has a history with the Diamondbacks, recording 29 saves across 62 appearances with the team in 2023 and 2024. With top Arizona relievers Justin Martinez (elbow) and A.J. Puk (elbow) both set to open 2026 on the Injured List, Sewald may be the favorite to begin the season as the team's primary closer. While Diamondbacks right-handers Ryan Thompson and Kevin Ginkel have also been mentioned as options to work the ninth inning, neither has as much closer experience as Sewald. If Sewald can pitch well enough to hold on to the job, he could be a sleeper saves candidate that is currently undervalued in fantasy drafts.

Demetrio Crisantes  • SS  •  Diamondbacks

Demetrio Crisantes Beginning Regular Season at Double-A

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop prospect Demetrio Crisantes will begin the 2026 regular season at the Double-A level. Crisantes spent his entire 2025 campaign at High-A but showed enough development to move up to the next level in the Arizona system. Last summer, Crisantes appeared in only 34 High-A games while dealing with a shoulder injury, but he was productive during this stint. The infielder would hold a .252/.358/.415 slash line with eight doubles, four home runs, and six stolen bases. In 2024, he would spend most of his campaign at Low-A Visalia and carried an elite .907 OPS over a 63-game stint. While the former seventh-round pick is unlikely to make his MLB debut this summer, he remains on track for a 2027 promotion and is a name to continue to monitor in dynasty formats.

Pavin Smith  • 1B  •  Diamondbacks

Pavin Smith Back in Action on Thursday

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith (forearm) is at first base and is batting third for Thursday's Cactus League game against the Chicago White Sox. Smith is back after missing some time with a minor forearm injury, so he'll be ready to go for Opening Day a week from now. The 30-year-old left-handed hitter is expected to be on the strong side of a platoon between first base and designated hitter for the Snakes in 2026. The former seventh overall pick in 2017 out of the University of Virginia hit .258/.362/.434 with a .797 OPS, eight home runs, 28 RBI, 36 runs scored, and two steals in 87 games played in 2025 in his sixth year with the D-backs. Smith played in only eight games after July 5 due to two injuries in the second half of the season. He has decent power from the left side, but his high strikeout rate and limited playing time limit his fantasy appeal to a late-round bench stash in deep-mixed leagues.

Gabriel Moreno  • C  •  Diamondbacks

Gabriel Moreno Returning to Spring Lineup

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (forearm) is serving as the team's designated hitter and will bat fifth in Thursday's Cactus League game versus the Chicago White Sox. Moreno will return after missing a few spring training games due to tightness in his right forearm, which mostly affected him while throwing the baseball. The 26-year-old starting backstop should be fine for Opening Day next week. He'll be hoping to get some more timing down before the start of the 2026 regular season, as he's gone just 5-for-28 (.179) with a homer, three RBI, one walk, and six strikeouts in nine Cactus League games played. Injuries have been an issue for Moreno in his four years in the big leagues, as he's only played over 100 games once, back in his second year in the league and first with Arizona in 2023. Moreno slashed .285/.353/.433 with a career-high .786 OPS, nine homers, and 40 RBI in 83 games in 2025. Treat Moreno as a low-end No. 1 catcher/high-end No. 2 option in upcoming fantasy drafts.

Tommy Troy  • SS  •  Diamondbacks

Will Tommy Troy be Fantasy Relevant in Redraft Leagues in 2026?

Arizona Diamondbacks infield prospect Tommy Troy impressed during his first taste of big-league camp this year, going 12-for-32 (.375) with eight singles and four doubles. The D-backs' fourth-ranked prospect wasn't necessarily expected to make the Opening Day roster, however, his performance reinforced the success he saw in 2025. The former first-round draft pick began the 2025 campaign at Double-A, and after 87 games there, he earned a promotion to Triple-A, where he was just as effective over 38 games. In all, the right-handed slugger produced a .289/.382/.451 slash line with 15 home runs, 24 steals, and better-than-average strikeout (16.9 percent) and walk rates (11.5 percent). The 24-year-old could be called up for his MLB debut around midseason, and at an offensively-challenged position like second base, Troy could be an interesting waiver wire addition whenever he gets the chance in Arizona.

Ryan Waldschmidt  • CF  •  Diamondbacks

Ryan Waldschmidt to Begin Season at Triple-A Reno

Arizona Diamondbacks outfield prospect Ryan Waldschmidt will begin the 2026 campaign at Triple-A Reno, according to Sam Dykstra of MLB.com. The D-backs' top-ranked prospect was invited to big league camp this year and held his own, going 10-for-39 (.256) with a home run, a stolen base, and producing some eye-opening exit velocities on his batted balls. The former first-round draft pick impressed in 2025, playing half of the season at High-A and the other half at Double-A with strong results at both stops, culminating in a .289/.419/.473 slash line with 18 home runs and 29 steals in 134 games. The 23-year-old could make his major league debut early this season if he hits the ground running in Reno, and with an intriguing contact/power/speed skillset, the right-handed slugger could become one of the higher-priority stash candidates in deeper leagues early on.

Corbin Carroll  • RF  •  Diamondbacks

Corbin Carroll Homers for First Time Since Returning From Injury

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll hit his first home run of the spring in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Chicago Cubs, a shot to left-center field off right-hander Edward Cabrera, reports Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic. The homer had a 105.5 mph exit velocity. Carroll also hit a line drive to right field earlier in the game that came off his bat at 106.6 mph. The 25-year-old former National League Rookie of the Year has only been the designated hitter for Arizona since returning from surgery on a broken hamate bone in his right hand, but he's expected to be cleared to play the field soon, and he should be ready to go for Opening Day late next week. Fantasy managers should like what they saw from Carroll on Wednesday at the plate as far as his pop goes following hand surgery. With the ability to contribute across all fantasy categories in a hitter-friendly home ballpark, Carroll is a top-25 overall fantasy player in 2026.
