Nick Gonzales News
Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales (heel) went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs on Sunday for Double-A Altoona. Gonzales is one of the Pirates' top-rated prospects, but he missed all of June and July with a heel injury. Since his return on Aug. 6, Gonzales has hit .269 with one homer, nine RBI and 10 walks to go along with a stolen base. Contact hitting has always been the name of Gonzales' game, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect much power out of his bat, but his ability to get on base is what will make him valuable in the future. Gonzales has played some shortstop this season, but managers should expect him to remain at second base in the future. With his ability to make strong contact, managers in dynasty leagues should consider keeping tabs on the second baseman.
Pittsburgh Pirates second base prospect Nick Gonzales (heel) went 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a stolen base in his second rehab game for the Pirates of the Florida Complex League. Gonzales had been sidelined since the beginning of June with a heel injury but looks to be back to full health. Gonzales was drafted as one of the best pure hitters out of college in 2020 and was hitting .247 with four homers, 15 RBI and four steals in 43 games for Double-Altoona prior to his injury. A consensus top-30 prospect, Gonzales could be up in the big leagues as soon as 2023 for the rebuilding Pirates. For now, the rest of the season will likely feature Gonzales getting more seasoning on the farm, but he remains a strong contact hitter when he is fully healthy. Redraft fantasy managers can ignore Gonzales, but he warrants attention in dynasty leagues.
Pittsburgh Pirates second base prospect Nick Gonzales went 2-for-3 with a walk on Wednesday for Double-A Altoona. With the nice performance, Gonzales has now hit safely in six straight games. Arguably the Pirates top prospect, Gonzales got off to a slow start this season and is starting to show why he is so highly regarded. For the season, the New Mexico State product is hitting .243 with six doubles, three homeruns, 10 RBI and three stolen bases. Gonzales has elite bat speed and also provides pop from the right side of the plate that has allowed him to hit the ball all over the field. His defense is his biggest question mark, but that shouldn't stop him from rising through the Pirates system. The Pirates have a reputation for keeping their young stars on the farm, but it wouldn't be a shock to see Gonzales get a taste of the big leagues this summer. He should be on the radar of all dynasty managers.
