Konnor Griffin Set to Ramp Up Baseball Activities

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin (finger) is set to "swing a bat/catch a ball" at the end of this week, per Alex Stumpf of DK Pittsburgh Sports. Griffin is working his way back from an injury to his left ring finger that has kept him out since early July. The 20-year-old has had an injury-marred first year in the big leagues, as he also missed time earlier in the year due to a flexor strain. Still, Griffin has been productive when healthy, hitting .276/.332/.404 with five home runs, 25 RBI, 36 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases across 247 plate appearances. While Griffin appears to be making progress towards a return, he could still be a week or two away from beginning a rehab assignment. The Pirates also have little incentive to rush the young phenom back to the big leagues, as they are actively fading from the National League playoff picture. Griffin profiles as a high-upside waiver wire target if he makes it back to the big leagues, but his redraft value for the remainder of 2026 is an open question.

Konnor Griffin Participating in Baseball Activities

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin (finger) suffered a torn left ring-finger sagittal band on a diving play on July 5 and was expected to be in a splint for six weeks. Griffin has been participating in baseball activities, playing catch and swinging with his top hand, according to MLB.com. He has also been standing in against the Trajekt machine. Griffin was originally placed on the 10-day injured list on July 7 and was moved to the 60-day IL on July 11. He still has a ways to go before potentially returning to the major-league roster, but barring a setback, the shortstop phenom will have a chance to be back in early September. The 20-year-old former ninth overall pick in 2024 is still rostered in over 60% of Yahoo leagues, even though he might only help fantasy managers for the last couple of weeks of the 2026 season. Before suffering a finger injury, Griffin was batting .276/.332/.404 with a .736 OPS, five homers, 25 RBI, 20 steals, and 35 runs scored across his first 225 at-bats. He's going to be a high-end, five-category contributor for a long time to come as long as he stays healthy.

Konnor Griffin Moved to 60-Day Injured List

The Pittsburgh Pirates transferred shortstop Konnor Griffin (finger) to the 60-day injured list on Saturday to open up roster spots for newly-acquired infielder Jacob Gonzalez and left-hander Brandon Eisert, according to Alex Stumpf of MLB.com. The Pirates placed Griffin on the 10-day IL on Tuesday with a torn tendon in his left ring finger, and he was given an eight- to 10-week timeline for a return, so he'll be out well into the second half of the season. The earliest he'll be able to return will be on Sept. 4. It's a tough break for the Bucs and for the 20-year-old rookie phenom, who was holding his own in his first 225 major-league at-bats, hitting .276/.332/.404 with a .736 OPS, five home runs, 25 RBI, 20 stolen bases, and 35 runs scored in his first MLB season in 2026. With Griffin out for the foreseeable future, Jared Triolo has been manning the 6 in Pittsburgh, but Gonzalez could see some time there as well after the Pirates acquired him from the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. Griffin is still rostered in 77% of Yahoo leagues despite his serious finger injury.

Konnor Griffin to Miss 8-10 Weeks With Finger Injury

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin (finger) is officially going on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a torn tendon in his left ring finger, director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk told Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Griffin will be in a splint for six weeks and is expected to be out for eight to 10 weeks. It's a tough break for the Pirates and for Griffin's fantasy managers, as he's not expected to be back until early in September. Jared Triolo will most likely handle most of the playing time at the 6 with Griffin out, with Nick Gonzales being another option in Pittsburgh's middle infield. Griffin, the top prospect in all of baseball going into the start of the 2026 campaign, has been a strong contributor for the Bucs in his first big-league season, slashing .276/.332/.404 with a .736 OPS, five home runs, 25 RBI, 20 stolen bases, and 35 runs scored in his 225 at-bats. He won't have a ton of time left to make an impact in fantasy once he returns from his finger injury, but Griffin's power/speed upside makes him worth stashing in most leagues in the meantime.

Konnor Griffin Could Miss at Least a Month With Torn Tendon in his Finger

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin (finger) is dealing with a torn tendon in his left ring finger, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN. Griffin could play through the injury, but rehab is the likeliest option and would keep him out for at least a month. The Pirates already have outfielder Oneil Cruz (hand) and first baseman Spencer Horwitz (hamstring) on the injured list with the All-Star break looming next week. The 20-year-old rookie phenom recently returned from a forearm injury in late June, and now he could miss another month-plus with his finger ailment. The former ninth overall pick in 2024 has the potential to be a perennial All-Star as one of the best shortstops in the big leagues. In his first MLB season, he has hit .276/.332/.404 with a .736 OPS, five home runs, 25 RBI, 35 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases across his 225 at-bats. Griffin should be stashed everywhere if he returns to the IL, which seems likely, after injuring his finger while making a diving catch in Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals. Nick Gonzales and Jared Triolo are both options to take over at the 6 in Pittsburgh with Griffin hurt again.

Konnor Griffin Reinstated From Injured List on Friday

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin (forearm) has been activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday ahead of his team's weekend set against the Cincinnati Reds. Griffin has been sidelined since late May due to a flexor strain in his throwing arm. Across 208 plate appearances before the injury, the 20-year-old hit .270/.327/.402 with four home runs, 22 RBI, 30 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases. However, Griffin was starting to come into his own at the plate before going down, hitting .306 with an .820 OPS across 108 plate appearances in May. Griffin appeared in a rehab game at Double-A on Wednesday and looked ready to go, hitting a home run and driving in three runs. As long as the injury is behind him, Griffin profiles as an elite source of speed and a high-upside bat across the other four categories upon his return.

Konnor Griffin Starting Rehab Assignment on Wednesday

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Don Kelly said that rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin (forearm) will start a minor-league rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on Wednesday, according to Alex Stumpf. Griffin has been on the 10-day injured list with a strained right forearm, but barring a setback on his rehab assignment, he could rejoin the Pirates' starting lineup this weekend or early next week. When the 20-year-old former ninth overall pick in 2024 is cleared to return from the IL, he will return to serving as the club's everyday shortstop. Griffin was touted as the league's next can't-miss prospect in spring training this year, and while he hasn't exactly been elite, he has more than held his own in 2026 in his first 51 major-league games, slashing .270/.327/.402 with a .729 OPS, four home runs, 22 RBI, 14 steals, and 30 runs scored across 208 plate appearances. Griffin really started to figure it out in 25 games in May before his forearm injury, going 30-for-98 (.306) at the plate with two homers, seven doubles, a triple, nine RBI, seven steals, and 20 runs scored in 108 plate appearances.

Konnor Griffin Trending Toward Rehab Assignment as Pirates Eye Early July Return

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin (forearm) is expected to begin rehab games within the next week, according to general manager Ben Cherington, assuming his progression continues without setbacks. Griffin has been sidelined since May 31 with a right forearm strain and has been working through his throwing program while rehabbing in Florida. The 20-year-old was beginning to heat up before the injury, hitting .317 over a 15-game stretch, which raised his season line to a .270 AVG and a .729 OPS. Expectations are sky-high for the first-round pick in the 2024 draft, as he is expected to return around early July.

Konnor Griffin Advancing in his Throwing Program

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin (forearm) saw Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas on June 2 and began throwing plyometric balls on June 7, according to MLB.com. He started throwing from 90 feet on June 10 and extended to 150 feet with no pain while rehabbing in Florida. Griffin was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 31 with a strained right forearm, but if he can avoid any setbacks as he continues to ramp up, he could rejoin the big-league roster by late June. The 20-year-old will eventually need to embark on a minor-league rehab assignment before the Pirates reinstate him from the IL, but he figures to be back before the All-Star break next month if everything goes according to plan. Before his forearm injury, the former ninth overall pick in 2024 was holding his own in his first 51 big-league games, slashing .270/.327/.402 with a .729 OPS, four homers, 22 RBI, 14 steals, and 30 runs scored across 208 plate appearances. Griffin really started to figure things out in May, going 30-for-98 (.306) with two homers, seven doubles, a triple, nine RBI, seven steals, and 20 runs scored in 25 games. He entered the 2026 campaign as a can't-miss prospect, and he has looked the part.

Konnor Griffin Will Continue Rehab in Florida During Pirates' Upcoming Road Trip

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin (elbow/forearm) is headed to the team's complex in Florida to continue his rehab during the team's upcoming west coast road trip, per Aiden Stepansky of MLB.com. Griffin has been on the 10-day injured list since late May due to a flexor strain in his throwing arm. While Griffin looks to be making some progress, he does not appear to be on the verge of a return to the Pirates lineup just yet. The 20-year-old got off to a solid start to his first season in Pittsburgh before the injury, hitting .270/.327/.402 with four home runs, 22 RBI, 30 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases. Given his importance to the Pirates' long-term outlook, the team could choose to be extra cautious with his recovery. In Griffin's absence, Jared Triolo has taken over as Pittsburgh's everyday shortstop.
