Konnor Griffin to Make Pirates Opening Day Roster?

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Colin Beazley and Noah Hiles both included Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin on their projected Opening Day roster. Nothing is official from the Pirates. Kriffin has so far gone 5-for-24 (.208) with three home runs, eight RBI, three runs scored, no walks, and six strikeouts in 26 plate appearances over nine Grapefruit League games in spring training. The 19-year-old phenom has looked the part and is mature beyond his years, not to mention all of the physical skills he has on defense and at the plate. In his first minor-league season in 2025, Griffin spent time at three different levels and hit a combined .333/.415/.527 with a .941 OPS, 21 home runs, 94 RBI, 117 runs scored, and 65 stolen bases in 122 games. There isn't anything he can't do on the diamond. The only question now is whether the Bucs feel he needs a tad bit more seasoning before being given the starting duties at the 6 in the Show. Either way, Griffin is going to make a potentially big impact in all fantasy leagues in 2026.

Konnor Griffin Launches Third Spring Training Home Run

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin launched his third home run of the spring during their contest on Sunday afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals. The top prospect hit a two-run shot in the game's opening frame off right-handed pitcher Kyle Leahy. While Griffin has shown immense upside, hitting three home runs over his first six games, he has posted a modest .214 AVG with a low .267 OBP as all three of his total hits have left the yard. Fantasy managers should continue to pay close attention to his production in camp, as he could contend for an early-season promotion or even crack the Opening Day lineup. Last summer, Griffin made his MiLB debut and was nothing short of dominant across his first 122 games, posting an elite .333/.415/.527 line with 21 home runs and 65 stolen bases. Given his five-category upside, he should be viewed as a high-end stash target in all formats if he were to fall short of the Opening Day roster.

Pirates Expected to Approach Konnor Griffin With Long-Term Extension This Spring

The Pittsburgh Pirates are expected to approach shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin with a long-term contract extension this spring, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Despite being only 19 years old with just 21 games of experience beyond High-A in the minor leagues, Griffin is the No. 1 prospect in the sport and is trending toward beginning the 2026 season as Pittsburgh's starting shortstop. If the 2025 Minor-League Player of the Year isn't on the Opening Day roster, it shouldn't be long before he makes his MLB debut. Passan writes that Griffin has "top-of-the-scale power and speed with a nifty glove and a shotgun-blast arm." His work ethic is also off the charts. If he makes the Opening Day roster, Griffin would be the first teenage hitter to debut on Opening Day since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1989. A contract extension this spring would accelerate his timetable to the big leagues and continue to raise his ADP in fantasy baseball drafts.

Konnor Griffin Back in the Lineup After Injury Scare

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin (foot) is back in the Grapefruit League lineup on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles, starting at shortstop and hitting eighth. Griffin was hit by a pitch on his foot in Wednesday's spring training contest and was removed as a precaution. The 19-year-old No. 1 overall prospect in baseball said after the game on Wednesday that he was fine. Despite still being a teenager and having played only 21 games above High-A in the minors, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal says that he's "trending toward" being the Pirates' Opening Day shortstop. Griffin has lived up to all the hype so far this spring and clubbed two home runs in the spring training game on Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox. All aspects of his game are polished well beyond his years, and his power/speed upside is through the roof. Griffin has all the makings of a future superstar and perennial All-Star.

Konnor Griffin "Trending Toward Being" Opening Day Shortstop

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal said on Foul Territory on Thursday that it looks like Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin is "trending toward being" the team's Opening Day shortstop. It was seen as a bit of a stretch going into spring training, since Griffin is only 19 years old and has played just 21 games in the minors above High-A. However, he's the consensus No. 1 prospect in baseball, and Rosenthal says the Pirates think he can be the hitting version of a "unicorn" that right-hander Paul Skenes is. It puts a lot of expectations and pressure on Kriffin, but despite still being a teenager, he is "put together physically," is mature beyond his years, and has a good head on his shoulders. Rosenthal thinks it's possible that Griffin can be one of those rare players like Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols, Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Trout, and Juan Soto that can immediately come to the big leagues and succeed. The hype is real and will continue to inflate his ADP going into the 2026 season.

Konnor Griffin Exits Early After Being Hit in the Foot

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin (foot) left Wednesday's Grapefruit League game in the sixth inning after he was hit in the foot with a pitch, according to DK Pittsburgh Sports. Griffin stayed in the game to run the bases, but he didn't come out to play the field in the seventh inning. It doesn't appear to be a very serious injury, though, as Griffin said, "I'm good." Pittsburgh might give the 19-year-old a day or two off in camp to rest his foot, but it doesn't sound like anything that will prohibit the young infielder from winning the Opening Day starting shortstop gig. Griffin has played in only 21 minor-league games beyond High-A, but his power/speed upside might be too much for the Pirates to pass up to begin the 2026 season, which is why they're considering signing him to a long-term extension before he has even set foot on a big-league diamond in a regular-season game. His draft stock will continue to improve in all fantasy formats if he continues to play well in spring training.

Konnor Griffin Open to Long-Term Extension With Pirates

Top prospect Konnor Griffin and the Pittsburgh Pirates are open to a long-term contract extension, according to Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The 19-year-old is the consensus No. 1 prospect in baseball going into the 2026 season, and he appears to be the favorite this spring to open the 2026 regular season as Pittsburgh's starting shortstop. He hit two homers in a Grapefruit League game against the Boston Red Sox already in spring training. Griffin has played in only 21 minor-league games above High-A, so fantasy managers in all formats would be wise to expect some growing pains if he breaks camp with the big-league roster. With positive reports coming out of camp, Griffin's ADP continues to rise. He should be rostered in all fantasy formats, and he's ranked as RotoBaller's No. 19 shortstop in fantasy because of his elite power/speed upside at a premium position.

Konnor Griffin Slugs Two Home Runs on Tuesday

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin had a monster spring training showing against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in his team's 16-7 victory. Griffin, who will turn 20 years old in late April, is widely considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball. While Pirates manager Don Kelly recently called it a "tough ask" for Griffin to be ready for the team's Opening Day roster, the young phenom may force his way to the big leagues in 2026. Across 563 plate appearances spread across three Minor League levels in 2025, Griffin slashed .333/.415/.527 with 21 home runs, 94 RBI, 117 runs scored, and 65 stolen bases. He finished the year at Double-A Altoona, where he hit .337/.418/.542 with five home runs, 22 RBI, 20 runs scored, and six stolen bases across 98 plate appearances. Pittsburgh may choose to send Griffin back to the Minors to begin 2026, but he may be worth stashing in redraft formats ahead of his eventual MLB debut.

Konnor Griffin Unlikely to Make Pirates Opening Day Roster?

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Don Kelly told Pittsburgh sportscaster Shelby Cassesse that "it would be a tough ask" for shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin to make the Opening Day roster, according to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan. "Keep in mind he's only had a handful of at-bats at Double-A," Kelly said. Spring training games have yet to begin, but it sounds like the Bucs are pretty set on having Kriffin, the consensus top prospect in the game, start at Triple-A Indianapolis in 2026. The ninth overall pick in 2024 made it all the way to Double-A Altoona in his first pro season in 2025, slashing a combined .333/.415/.527 with a .941 OPS, 21 home runs, 94 RBI, 117 runs scored, and 65 stolen bases in 122 games played at three different levels. Griffin will still be a stash candidate in all single-year leagues, even if he doesn't make the Opening Day roster, but keep in mind that the Pirates generally have not rushed their top prospects to the majors.

Can Konnor Griffin Win Shortstop Job in Pittsburgh?

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin, the consensus top prospect in baseball entering the 2026 season, made it look way too easy in his first year of pro ball in 2025, reaching Double-A at just 19 years old. The former ninth overall pick by the Bucs in 2024 hit .333/.415/.527 with a .941 OPS, 21 home runs, 94 RBI, 117 runs scored, and 65 stolen bases in 122 games (563 plate appearances) with Single-A Bradenton, High-A Greensboro, and Double-A Altoona. The Pirates might want to practice some patience with Griffin since he has played in just 21 games above A ball, but MLB.com speculates that it might be hard for Pittsburgh to keep him off the Opening Day roster if he continues to do what he did last year in spring training. Griffin has plus-plus speed, amazing athleticism, and is physical at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds. He has all the makings of a future superstar. Griffin should already be rostered in all keeper leagues, and his current 241 ADP should only continue to rise this spring in single-year leagues.
