Paul Skenes News
Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Paul Skenes, the No. 1 pick in last year's MLB Draft, spun another gem during his sixth minor league appearance of the season on April 30. The 21-year-old right-hander tossed six shutout innings, recording seven strikeouts along the way. He surrendered just one walk and four hits. 2024 has certainly treated Skenes well; the former LSU standout has allowed just one earned run through 23 innings of work, dropping his FIP to 0.91. He has also forced plenty of weak contact (52.5 GB%) and hasn't allowed a homer since he was in college. No team ever wants to rush their prospects to the majors, but there may be no better time than the present for Pittsburgh to promote Skenes. He has proven that he can mow down Triple-A batters, so he should get his shot in the majors sooner rather than later.
Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Paul Skenes proved he was human on Wednesday when he gave up his first run of the season. Last year's first overall tossed 4 1/3 innings and allowed five hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and struck out seven. Skenes, 21, continues to be as advertised and now have a 0.53 ERA with 34 strikeouts in just 17 innings. The right-hander is one of the top prospects in the game and doesn't have much left to prove, but the Pirates are going to be extra cautious with their future ace before taking the training wheels off and promoting him to the big-league. Skenes is worth stashing ahead of time in most leagues.
Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Paul Skenes was electric on Thursday, dominating minor-league hitters for Triple-A Indianapolis. Skenes pitched 3 innings of shutout ball, allowing just a hit and two walks while striking out a whopping eight. He also built up to 65 pitches in this one. The Pirates said earlier in the day that Skenes will need more seasoning in the minors before he is called up, but it's going to be really tough to keep him down there if he keeps pitching like he has been. He needs to be rostered in all leagues at this point, as his call-up feels like an inevitability.

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher prospect Paul Skenes is the new top prospect for pitchers by MLB.com. After going first overall in the 2023 draft, there were talks of Skenes making a push for the majors last season. That never came to pass, however, and the big righty will now look to leave Spring Training as a member of the Pirates' 26-man roster. The 6'6" flamethrower has an 80-rated fastball, a slider that comes in rated at 70, and good enough control to use those weapons against any hitter. Skenes is a dynasty darling and should be drafted in most redraft leagues as well. If your draft occurs before word comes out where Skenes will start the season, he is worth the stash. He currently has a 266.7 ADP but that can jump up quickly if the Pirates announce him making the club. Skenes may use the spring to work on a third pitch, his changeup, so don't be discouraged if he has a rough start. He is head and shoulders above other minor league pitchers at this point and can help fantasy managers as soon as he takes the hill in the majors.
