David Hess News
Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher David Hess (illness) announced on Friday that he has been cleared to resume baseball activities. The four-year major-league veteran had been dealing with a cancerous tumor in his chest, undergoing chemotherapy starting in October of 2021. Hess will now move towards a return to the mound. He has amassed a career ERA of 6.25 with 161 strikeouts in 210 1/3 major-league innings with Baltimore, Miami, and Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher David Hess was traded to the Miami Marlins for right-handed pitching prospect Justin Sterner and cash considerations, according to the Miami Herald. Hess was impressive at Triple-A Durham this season, earning a 2.81 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP and 37 strikeouts to just five walks across 32 innings, including two starts. The 27-year-old right-hander bolsters the Miami bullpen. He is unlikely to be a factor in redraft leagues this season, but he could be a name to watch in deeper dynasty and keeper formats in case his career blossoms late. Jordan Holloway was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Hess on the active roster.
The Baltimore Orioles are moving starting pitcher David Hess to the bullpen for the second time this season. Josh Rogers will start in his place on Wednesday against the A's. Manager Brandon Hyde said the team will likely play with the No. 5 spot in the rotation the rest of the year. Hess is 1-9 with a 7.20 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 53 K's, 27 walks and a league-high 20 home runs allowed in 65 innings (13 starts, one relief outing), so this move was long overdue. Rogers has a 7.88 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in eight innings of relief for Baltimore this year. He had an even worse 8.49 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 4.6 K/9 in three starts in 2018, so he should not be a streaming option next week in any league.
