David Hess Cleared To Resume Baseball Activities

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher David Hess (illness) announced on Friday that he has been cleared to resume baseball activities. The four-year major-league veteran had been dealing with a cancerous tumor in his chest, undergoing chemotherapy starting in October of 2021. Hess will now move towards a return to the mound. He has amassed a career ERA of 6.25 with 161 strikeouts in 210 1/3 major-league innings with Baltimore, Miami, and Tampa Bay.

David Hess Acquired By Marlins

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher David Hess was traded to the Miami Marlins for right-handed pitching prospect Justin Sterner and cash considerations, according to the Miami Herald. Hess was impressive at Triple-A Durham this season, earning a 2.81 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP and 37 strikeouts to just five walks across 32 innings, including two starts. The 27-year-old right-hander bolsters the Miami bullpen. He is unlikely to be a factor in redraft leagues this season, but he could be a name to watch in deeper dynasty and keeper formats in case his career blossoms late. Jordan Holloway was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Hess on the active roster.

David Hess Moved To Bullpen, Josh Rogers To Start Wednesday

The Baltimore Orioles are moving starting pitcher David Hess to the bullpen for the second time this season. Josh Rogers will start in his place on Wednesday against the A's. Manager Brandon Hyde said the team will likely play with the No. 5 spot in the rotation the rest of the year. Hess is 1-9 with a 7.20 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 53 K's, 27 walks and a league-high 20 home runs allowed in 65 innings (13 starts, one relief outing), so this move was long overdue. Rogers has a 7.88 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in eight innings of relief for Baltimore this year. He had an even worse 8.49 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 4.6 K/9 in three starts in 2018, so he should not be a streaming option next week in any league.

David Hess Gets Knocked Around In Tuesday's Start

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher David Hess turned in an ugly outing in Tuesday's 11-4 blowout to the Yankees. Hess pitched five innings, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits (including three home runs) and four walks with five strikeouts. The 25-year-old started the season strong but has gone downhill since and now owns a bloated 6.75 ERA with 38 strikeouts and 18 walks in 45 1/3 IP. Hess should not be owned anywhere at this point. He is slated to make his next start against the Rockies in Colorado and it is very possible he could put up a similarly ugly outing.

David Hess Will Start on Wednesday

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher David Hess will rejoin the starting rotation for Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox. Hess was demoted after going 1-4 with a 5.88 ERA to start the season. However, Alex Cobb (back) landed on the injured list, so Hess will make the start on Wednesday. He's not worth grabbing in most fantasy formats, so most owners can avoid this update.

David Hess Moving To Bullpen

Baltimore Orioles pitcher David Hess will head to the bullpen to clear space for John Means in the starting rotation, according to manager Brandon Hyde. Hess is 1-4 with an ugly 5.88 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 18 strikeouts in 26 innings in his six appearances (five starts) for the O's so far this year. He should be well off anyone's fantasy radar for the time being. Means, on the other hand, has been one of Baltimore's most effective pitchers in the early going, posting a 1.74 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 23 K's in 20 2/3 frames in his seven outings (three starts).

David Hess Takes Loss Friday In Decent Start

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher David Hess fell to 1-2 in Friday's 6-4 loss to the Red Sox. Hess allowed three runs on six hits (including a solo home run) and no walks with three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings pitched. The 25-year-old has gotten off to a good start this season with a 3.32 ERA, but his four home runs allowed and 15 strikeouts over 19 innings leave something to be desired. Hess is scheduled to face the hot Rays on the road in his next start and should be avoided by fantasy players.

David Hess Allows No Hits In First Start Of Season Monday

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher David Hess turned in a strong performance in Monday's 6-5 win over the Blue Jays. Hess pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on no hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. The results were great and the 25-year-old also showed a bump in velocity (average fastball velocity of 93.8 mph) compared to an average of 91.9 mph last season. The increase in velocity may help Hess improve on a lackluster 2018 season, but fantasy players will need to see more outings like this before giving him a vote of confidence. Hess will look to replicate his success in his next start, likely against a Yankees lineup far from full strength right now.

David Hess To Start Sunday

Baltimore Orioles pitcher David Hess will make the start on Sunday against the White Sox. Hess is 3-10 this year with a 5.17 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and very mediocre 6.0 K/9 in 18 outings (16 starts) for the Orioles. Even against the weak White Sox lineup, you'd have to be pretty desperate to roll with Hess on Sunday in deeper fantasy leagues.

David Hess May Miss His Start Saturday

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher David Hess (eye) was hit in the eye with a football on Friday and might need to be scratched from his start on Saturday against the Rays. If he can't go, Yefry Ramirez would be the candidate to replace him. As if the Orioles weren't already enough of a mess already, this had to happen. Neither Hess nor Ramirez are worthy fantasy streamers anyway.
