Derek Law to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery on Flexor Tendon

Washington Nationals right-handed reliever Derek Law (forearm) will undergo season-ending surgery on a partially torn flexor tendon, according to Spencer Nusbaum of the Washington Post. Law will need nine to 10 months to recover and doesn't expect to return until July. The 34-year-old didn't pitch in the majors at all this season after beginning the campaign on the 15-day injured list with a flexor strain. Law progressed enough to pitch in rehab games over the past few weeks, but this will now go down as a lost season for him. He was an important cog in Washington's bullpen last season, as he racked up a whopping 90 innings in 75 appearances and recorded a 2.60 ERA with 17 holds and a 1.18 WHIP. As a soon-to-be free agent, Law may have thrown his last pitch in a Nationals uniform.

Derek Law Resumes Rehab Assignment

Washington Nationals right-handed reliever Derek Law (forearm) resumed a minor-league rehab assignment on Wednesday with Triple-A Rochester and threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout and a walk, according to MASN's Mark Zuckerman. Law reported a reoccurrence of arm soreness last week but is now pitching in games again and could rejoin the big-league bullpen before the All-Star break. The 34-year-old has not pitched for the Nationals yet in 2025 but has already made four appearances on the farm. In his first year in D.C. in 2024, Law was a key reliever for the Nats, going 7-4 with a 2.60 ERA (3.32 FIP), a 1.18 WHIP, one save, a career-high 76 strikeouts and 24 walks in 90 innings out of the bullpen. When he's ready to return, he'll likely be eased back in for the second half of the season.

Derek Law Transferring to Triple-A

Washington Nationals reliever Derek Law (forearm) will have his minor-league rehab assignment moved from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Rochester, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com. The veteran has been held out of the season until this point due to forearm inflammation that occurred during spring training. He yielded four hits and three earned runs (one home run) over 2 2/3 innings pitched for the Senators. The stats aren't great, but the important thing is that Law built himself up to 33 pitches in his most recent outing. He'll have some ups and downs as he continues to build stamina. The 34-year-old boasted a stellar 2.60 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 90 innings last season.

Derek Law Starting Rehab Assignment on Thursday

Washington Nationals right-handed reliever Derek Law (forearm) is starting a minor-league rehab assignment with Double-A Harrisburg on Thursday. Law will make the start for the Senators and will require additional rehab outings since inflammation in his right forearm has held him out for the entire 2025 season to this point. But when the 34-year-old veteran is ready to rejoin Washington's bullpen, he should have a key late-inning setup role in front of closer Kyle Finnegan. Law had a nice 2.60 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with seven wins, 17 holds and a save in 90 innings pitched in D.C. a year ago. While Law probably won't be in line for many save situations the rest of the year, he could be pretty valuable for fantasy managers in leagues that count holds.

Derek Law Throws Sim Game on Monday

Washington Nationals right-handed reliever Derek Law (forearm) threw a simulated game on Monday and will rejoin the team later this week if he recovers well, according to The Washington Post's Andrew Golden. If Law feels good on Tuesday, he could be cleared to start a minor-league rehab assignment later this week as he recovers from a strained right forearm. The 34-year-old veteran hurler has been out all season, so he'll likely have a lengthy rehab assignment down on the farm. His career-high workload in 2024 of 90 relief innings took a toll on him in his eighth year in the big leagues and first with Washington a year ago. In his 75 outings out of the bullpen, Law had a sharp 2.60 ERA (3.32 FIP), a 1.18 WHIP, one save, a career-high 76 K's and 24 walks. He also had 17 holds. When Law returns, he could return to a key late-inning, high-leverage role by season's end.

Derek Law Throwing On Flat Ground

Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez said that right-handed reliever Derek Law (forearm) threw from 60 feet on flat ground on Monday and felt good. Law has been dealing with a right-forearm injury since late in the 2024 season and has been on the injured list for the first month-plus of the 2025 campaign as a result. The 34-year-old veteran is starting to ramp up his throwing program, but he still has a ways to go before being activated from the 15-day injured list and will probably require a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment. Law might not make his season debut for the Nats until late-May or early June. Last year for the Nationals he was a solid contributor in a career-high 75 relief outings, posting a 2.60 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with one save, a career-high 76 strikeouts and 24 walks in 90 innings pitched.

Derek Law Will Not Be Ready For Opening Day

Washington Nationals right-handed pitcher Derek Law (elbow) is not expected to be ready for Opening Day. According to Spencer Nusbaum of the Washington Post, Law believes he will be placed on the 15-day injured list to begin the season. Law has been slowly increasing his workload during camp after battling an elbow injury last season that has continued to linger. Last season, the 24-year-old held a 2.60 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP. Across this stint, Law tallied just 76 strikeouts but showed strong command as he served up walks at a solid 6.6 percent rate. He also generated an elite 3.8 percent barrel rate and a 35.2 percent hard-hit rate. When Law returns to action, fantasy managers should expect him to be a reliable source of holds, as he tallied 17 last season while typically pitching in the seventh inning.

Derek Law Intent On Breaking Nats' Workload Record

In 2025, Washington Nationals relief pitcher Derek Law has his sights set on breaking the team's innings pitched record for a reliever. As such, the 34-year-old is just starting to ramp up, throwing to live batters for the first time this spring despite being fully healthy. The intent is to not put any unnecessary stress on his arm before the season begins, especially after throwing 90 innings in 2024, the second-most for a relief pitcher in all of baseball last season. To beat the record, the righty will have to surpass 93 innings pitched to pass the current record-holder, Saul Rivera. The veteran posted a good 2.60 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP on the way to setting a career high in holds with 17, but isn't known for having strikeout stuff like many relievers of today, logging a 7.6 K/9 and a 14.2 percent K-BB%. With that being the case, Law is really only worthy of a roster spot in leagues that reward holds or NL-only formats.

Derek Law Agrees With Nationals On Minor-League Deal

Free-agent reliever Derek Law agreed with the Washington Nationals on Wednesday on a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to major-league spring training, according to sources. The deal would pay Law $1.5 million with $500,000 in incentives for games pitched if he's in the majors. The contract also includes three opt-out clauses. The 33-year-old veteran right-hander has seven years of big-league experience and had a 3.60 ERA (4.62 FIP) and 1.38 WHIP with two saves, 26 walks and 45 strikeouts in 55 innings over 54 appearances (three starts) for the Cincinnati Reds last year. If Law makes the Nationals roster out of spring training, he'd likely serve in a middle-relief bullpen role. Fantasy managers can ignore him.

Derek Law Goes On The Injured List

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Derek Law landed on the 15-day injured list on Friday, retroactive to May 17. The 32-year-old has appeared in 20 games this season, amassing a 3-4 record (two starts) with a 2.57 ERA, two holds, and one save. Unfortunately, the sprained elbow will keep him off the field, although his absence won't negatively impact many fantasy managers.
