DJ Stewart, Tyrone Taylor To See More Time

With New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte (knee) sidelined, the obvious candidates on the roster to see more action in the outfield are DJ Stewart and Tyrone Taylor. Second baseman Jeff McNeil could see more time in the outfield, too, which would open up the possibility of moving an infielder up from Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets have used Jose Iglesias often against lefties to spell the slumping McNeil at the keystone. Brett Baty, who has played three games for Syracuse at second since his demotion last month, and prospect Luisangel Acuna are infielders on the 40-man roster. The only other outfielder on the 40-man roster is speedster Duke Ellis, but he's only played eight major-league games. Ben Game and Trayce Thompson are other options not on the 40-man roster for the Mets.

Brett Baty, DJ Stewart Sitting On Wednesday

New York Mets third baseman Brett Baty and outfielder DJ Stewart are both on the bench on Wednesday for the series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers with left-hander James Paxton on the hill. Mark Vientos will handle third-base duties and hit cleanup, while Tyrone Taylor will play left field and bat sixth against Paxton. The struggling Baty has been in a strict platoon with Vientos of late and will head back to the bench with the club facing a southpaw on Wednesday. If the 24-year-old cannot figure it out at the plate soon, he could star losing even more playing time to Vientos, who has an impressive 1.085 OPS since being called up from Triple-A Syracuse on May 15. Against a lefty, Vientos will be a popular DFS value play on Wednesday.

DJ Stewart Still Receiving Playing Time

New York Mets outfielder DJ Stewart was in danger of losing time due to the return of designated hitter J.D. Martinez, but that may not seem to be the case. Even though Stewart has ceded primary designated hitter duties to Martinez, Stewart has seen starts in left and right field, which could still make him worth holding on to in NL-only formats. On the season, Stewart has posted a mediocre .185/.365/.415 line with four home runs. However, he has shown an excellent eye at the plate with a 20.0% walk rate, which is the best among qualified hitters. Manager Carlos Mendoza values his patience at the plate and will continue to reward him with opportunities in the foreseeable future. Stewart should remain rostered in NL-only formats, especially points leagues or rotisserie leagues that score on-base percentage.

DJ Stewart Grabbing Pine Again On Tuesday

New York Mets outfielder DJ Stewart will start on the bench on Tuesday as the team faces the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. This will be the third straight game that Stewart has started on the bench, although the previous two games were against left-handed pitching. Stewart does have two home runs in his first 25 at-bats of the 2024 campaign, but he's also gone only 5-for-25 (.200) with seven RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored. Catcher Francisco Alvarez is serving as the designated hitter and batting sixth, while Omar Narvaez is doing the catching and hitting ninth on Tuesday against Pirates rookie right-hander Jared Jones. The 30-year-old Stewart might find himself on the bench more often than not moving forward unless he picks things up offensively.

DJ Stewart Goes Deep On Thursday

New York Mets outfielder DJ Stewart went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run during Thursday's 16-4 rout of the Atlanta Braves. It was Stewart's second homer in his past three games, although the two long balls are his only hits this season. The 30-year-old has seen steady playing time as the designated hitter in the early going, but this seems likely to change whenever J.D. Martinez joins the roster. Stewart can be utilized as a bench bat in NL-Only formats while he is on a power surge, but he can be left on the waiver wire everywhere else.

DJ Stewart Absent From Thursday’s Lineup Again

New York Mets outfielder DJ Stewart (wrist) is not seen in Thursday's lineup for the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies as a result of left wrist soreness. The 29-year-old, wearing an .899 OPS in 160 plate appearances this summer, also missed Wednesday's matchup with the ailment and needs at least another day to heal. Stewart should be considered day-to-day, and fantasy managers might want to start looking for another hot bat to ride in the home stretch with Stewart cooling down a bit lately. Jeff McNeil will park in right field and bat sixth against left-hander Ranger Suarez for this one.

DJ Stewart Dealing With Wrist Injury

New York Mets outfielder DJ Stewart (wrist) was scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Miami Marlins and was sporting a large ice wrap on his wrist before the game. With Stewart out, Rafael Ortega drew the start in left field and was hitting sixth in the batting order against Marlins right-hander Eury Perez. For now, consider Stewart to be day-to-day and check back to see if he's available on Thursday for the start of a series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The 29-year-old left-handed hitter has played pretty well for the Mets in just 50 games this year, hitting .264 (37-for-140) with 11 home runs, eight doubles, 26 RBI and 20 runs scored in 160 plate appearances.

DJ Stewart Goes Yard In Return To Play In Loss

New York Mets outfielder DJ Stewart (back), who was back in Saturday's lineup in right field, went 1-for-4 with a home run in the 8-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins. The 29-year-old returned following a three-game bout with lower-back tightness, and he made no mistake on a Louie Varland fastball down the heart of the plate for an eighth-inning solo homer. Stewart has filled in admirably for the injured Starling Marte (groin), slashing a robust .265/.345/.637 with 11 blasts, 22 RBI, and 14 runs scored during 118 plate appearances. The former first-round pick's hot streak is worth riding in deeper-mixed/NL-only formats while it lasts, and Stewart could be working his way onto New York's Opening Day roster in 2024 if he maintains some degree of this surprising string of success.

DJ Stewart Missing Another Game

New York Mets outfielder DJ Stewart (back) is sitting for the second straight game on Wednesday as the team takes on the Washington Nationals in D.C. Stewart is dealing with lower-back tightness and should be considered day-to-day. With the 29-year-old left-handed hitter out again, Rafael Ortega will draw a start in right field and hit ninth against Nationals right-hander Joan Adon. Stewart has only seen 98 at-bats since being called up by the Mets, but he's hitting a decent .265/.348/.622 with a .971 OPS, 10 home runs, 21 RBI and 13 runs scored in only 39 games in Queens. He should be valuable in deeper fantasy leagues against right-handed pitching if he continues to see regular playing time the rest of the way.

DJ Stewart Dealing With Back Tightness

New York Mets outfielder DJ Stewart (back) sat out of Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals due to lower-back tightness. Stewart's injury is considered minor, so fantasy managers should view him as day-to-day for now. The 29-year-old left-handed hitter has played well since the Mets brought him up in June, as he's currently hitting .265 (26-for-98) with 10 home runs, five doubles, 21 RBI and 13 runs scored in 39 games and 114 plate appearances. Stewart is just two homers shy of his career-high in home runs (12), which was set in 100 games with the Baltimore Orioles in 2021. With the Mets playing out the string down the stretch in 2023, Stewart should continue to see playing time against right-handed pitching once he's past his back issue.
