Drew VerHagen Could Return On Saturday

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Drew VerHagen (hip) came through his one-inning minor-league rehab stint well on Thursday. If he recovers well on Friday, he could come off the 15-day injured list on Saturday to rejoin the Cardinals' bullpen. The 32-year-old reliever gave up a run on Thursday for Double-A Springfield, but he looks to be on the verge of returning to the big-league roster. VerHagen hasn't been fantasy relevant this year with his 4.78 ERA (4.85 FIP), 1.46 WHIP, 18 walks and 38 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings pitched over 35 relief outings for the Red Birds. In eight major-league seasons, he's sporting a 5.19 ERA (4.92 FIP), 1.47 WHIP and 212 strikeouts in 258 1/3 innings over 181 appearances (eight starts).

Drew VerHagen To Have Season-Ending Hip Surgery

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Drew VerHagen (hip) will have season-ending hip surgery shortly, according to a team official. VerHagen injured his hip in April and won't make it back for the rest of the 2022 season. The 31-year-old had signed a two-year, $5.5 million deal with St. Louis in free agency. He'll end the season with just 21 2/3 innings under his belt in 19 relief outings, posting a 6.65 ERA, 1.89 WHIP, 18 strikeouts and 14 walks for the Red Birds. VerHagen wasn't on the fantasy radar to begin with.

Steven Matz Activated, Drew VerHagen To Injured List

The St. Louis Cardinals have activated left-hander Steven Matz (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. In a corresponding move, the team placed right-hander Drew VerHagen (hip) on the 15-day injured list with a right hip impingement. VerHagen's move to the injured list is retroactive to July 15. Matz had been out since late May with a left shoulder impingement. He'll be looking to turn his season around after he compiled an ugly 6.03 ERA and 1.39 WHIP across his first nine starts of the year.

Drew VerHagen To Make A Rehab Start On Thursday

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Drew VerHagen (hip) is expected to throw a bullpen session in St. Louis on Tuesday and then make another rehab start at Double-A Springfield on Thursday. VerHagen was placed on the injured list on April 22 due to a right hip impingement, and he received an injection in his hip the following day. He gave up one run while walking one and striking out two in 1 2/3 innings in a rehab outing for Triple-A Memphis on May 3. VerHagen didn't make an expected rehab start for Memphis on May 7, but manager Oliver Marmol said it wasn't due to a setback in his recovery. Once he's ready to return, the 31-year-old should return to a long-relief role in St. Louis' bullpen.

Drew VerHagen Suffers Hip Injury On Thursday

St. Louis Cardinals right-handed pitcher Drew VerHagen (hip) was removed from Thursday's game against the Miami Marlins after sustaining a hip injury. He was originally lined up to pitched multiple innings on Thursday, working behind starter Jordan Hicks, but the injury limited him to just one inning. VerHagen signed a two-year deal with the Cardinals this offseason. He's made three appearances so far this year and has compiled a 5.79 ERA and a 1.93 WHIP over 4.2 innings. There's no word yet on the severity of the injury or whether he's expected to land on the injured list.

Cardinals Sign Drew VerHagen To Two-Year Deal

The St. Louis Cardinals reopened MLB free agency on Friday by signing right-hander Drew VerHagen to a two-year, $5.5 million deal, according to a source. VerHagen pitched for the Detroit Tigers from 2014-19 and played in Japan the last two seasons. He will make up to $2.5 million this year and $3 million in 2023, with up to $ million in performance bonuses each season. The 31-year-old has a 5.11 ERA and 18.3% strikeout rate in 199 career innings at the big-league level over six seasons, all with the Tigers. Of his 127 outings in the majors, VerHagen has made only eight starts, so he'll function as relief depth for St. Louis in 2022. In two years in Japan as a starter, he had a 3.49 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a 25% strikeout rate.

Drew VerHagen Designated For Assignment

The Detroit Tigers announced that they are designating reliever Drew VerHagen for assignment. VerHagen, who is out of minor-league options, will have to clear waivers before the Tigers can assign him to the minors. He had allowed seven earned runs in 10 innings of work on the year.

Drew VerHagen To Make Spot Start

Detroit Tigers pitcher Drew VerHagen will start for the Tigers tomorrow against the Orioles if he is not used as a long reliever tonight. VerHagen will be starting in place of the injured Michael Fulmer and has made one career MLB start. He is a good pitcher to stack against, as he had a 4.90 ERA in 97 1/3 innings at Triple-A Toledo, and he has a 4.47 ERA in 42 MLB appearances.
