Erik Swanson Could Return Thursday

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Erik Swanson (forearm), who has been sidelined since spring training with carpal-tunnel syndrome in his forearm, had a clean three-up, three-down inning in a minor-league rehab outing on Tuesday for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. The Toronto Sun's Rob Longley suggests that Swanson could be activated from the injured list and return to the big-league bullpen for the first time all year on Thursday for the start of a home series against the Athletics. The 31-year-old has allowed eight runs (six earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out four in six rehab outings with Buffalo, Single-A Dunedin and the rookie-level Florida Complex League. Swanson had an ERA over 5.00 in 45 appearances for the Jays last year, but he could bounce back as a solid late-inning setup man for Toronto if his forearm injury is in the rearview mirror.

Erik Swanson Sent To FCL To Start Rehab Assignment

The Toronto Blue Jays have sent relief pitcher Erik Swanson (forearm) to the Florida Complex League to begin his rehab assignment. The 31-year-old has been dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome in his right forearm. Swanson was initially expected to begin his rehab assignment in April but faced numerous setbacks. However, it appears the high-leverage reliever has progressed and will begin his rehab assignment. Fantasy managers should continue to keep an eye on his status as he could be in contention to return to the majors before the end of the month. While Swanson struggled during the 2024 season, he was a valuable setup man in the Toronto bullpen in 2022 and 2023. During these two seasons, Swanson tallied a combined 43 holds with an impressive 2.39 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP.

Erik Swanson Hopes To Start Rehab Assignment This Week

A second opinion on Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Erik Swanson's forearm showed no structural damage, and he was scheduled to throw a bullpen session in Florida on Tuesday. Swanson is hoping that he will throw in some minor-league rehab games by the end of the week at the rookie-level Florida Complex League. The 31-year-old veteran was moved to the 60-day injured list earlier this week after having a setback with his right forearm last week. He's dealing with a median-nerve entrapment but could return to Toronto's bullpen later this month as long as he doesn't suffer another setback on his rehab assignment. Swanson has yet to pitch in 2025 because of his injury, but once he's ready, he'll be looking to rebound from a rough 2024 campaign that saw him post a 5.03 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 37 K's and 14 walks in 39 1/3 relief innings in his second year in Toronto.

Erik Swanson Set For Further Evaluation

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Erik Swanson (forearm) is headed back to Toronto to undergo further evaluation. The reliever was set to begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday but was scratched due to a setback. Fantasy managers should pay close attention to his status as the team could opt to slow down his recovery process if his forearm has not fully healed. Swanson has been sidelined with carpal tunnel syndrome in his forearm. Last season, the 31-year-old battled injuries, logging just 39 1/3 innings of work. However, during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Swanson was a reliable high-leverage option in the Toronto bullpen. During these two years, he held a 2.23 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and tallied 43 holds. When he does make his season debut, he should reclaim a high-leverage role in the bullpen.

Erik Swanson Starting Rehab Assignment On Tuesday

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Erik Swanson (forearm) is slated to report to Low-A Dunedin on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment. The right-hander has been sidelined at the start of the campaign due to carpal tunnel syndrome in his forearm. However, Swanson has progressed well and is nearing his return to the major leagues. Fantasy managers should pay close attention to his status during his rehab assignment, as he could be cleared to return to Toronto sometime next week. Last summer, the 31-year-old had a disappointing campaign as he posted a 5.03 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP across 39 1/3 innings of work. However, he was an effective reliever during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. During this time frame, Swanson logged 120 1/3 innings to the tune of a 2.39 ERA and a stellar 1.01 WHIP. During this stint, he was deployed as the setup man in Toronto, as he tallied 43 holds. When cleared to return, he should have a similar high-leverage role in the bullpen.

Erik Swanson, Ryan Burr Progressing

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Erik Swanson (elbow) threw 16 pitches and recorded four outs in an extended spring game on Friday, while righty Ryan Burr (shoulder) is scheduled to throw off a mound on Saturday, according to Sportsnet's Shi Dividi. Swanson is attempting to recover from carpal tunnel in his right elbow, but he appears to be making good progress and could be back with the Blue Jays as soon as next week once he begins an official rehab assignment. Burr is recovering from right-shoulder inflammation that dates back to the start of spring training, but he resumed throwing bullpen sessions on April 12 and could be cleared to go on a short rehab assignment sooner than later. Both Swanson and Burr will bolster Toronto's bullpen when they are ready, but they aren't really on the fantasy radar.

Erik Swanson Throws Bullpen On Friday

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Erik Swanson (forearm) threw his first bullpen session on Friday since receiving a cortisone injection. Swanson opened the campaign on the 15-day injured list due to carpal tunnel syndrome in his right forearm. While he is still several weeks away from a return, this is a good sign to see him throwing on the mound. Last season, Swanson was only able to log 39 1/3 innings of work and held a high 5.03 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP. However, during the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, Swanson was a valuable high-leverage option in the bullpen. In 2022, Swanson enjoyed a career season, posting a stellar 1.68 ERA and 0.90 WHIP while tallying 14 holds. In 2023, Swanson tallied 29 holds across 66 2/3 innings of work. When healthy, he will be a viable target in leagues that reward holds.

Erik Swanson Diagnosed With "Median Nerve Entrapment"

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Erik Swanson (forearm) has been diagnosed with a "median nerve entrapment" in his right forearm. His MRI exam showed no structural damage, but he received a cortisone injection and will back off from throwing for a couple of days. There's no timetable for when the 31-year-old veteran will be cleared to pitch in games again, but all things considered, it's positive news. He is fully expected to begin the regular season on the injured list, but perhaps Swanson will be able to make his 2025 debut at some point in April if he can resume throwing sooner than later. Swanson had a disappointing 5.03 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 37:14 K:BB in 39 1/3 relief innings in 2024 in his second year in Toronto and was even sent to the minors for a bit. He had a 2.60 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with eight saves in three prior seasons, though, so if he can get healthy, he could easily bounce back as a late-inning setup man for Toronto.

Erik Swanson To Meet With Doctor On Thursday

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Erik Swanson (elbow, forearm), who has been dealing with elbow and forearm discomfort in camp, has an in-person meeting with Dr. Keith Meister in Texas on Thursday. Manager John Schneider said Swanson is going to see Meister due to the issues "being a little bit of a recurring theme. Wanting to nail down exactly what's going on and get that opinion on it." The team will have more information on Swanson later this week, but as things currently stand, it would be a surprise if the 31-year-old veteran was ready or Opening Day in a few weeks. Swanson was sent to the minors at one point last season and finished with an ugly 5.03 ERA (6.06 FIP), 1.27 WHIP, 37 strikeouts and 14 walks in 39 1/3 relief innings for Toronto in his second season with the team. He should be able to rebound in 2025, but he's going to need to get healthy first.

Erik Swanson Likely To Open The Season On Injured List

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Erik Swanson (forearm) will likely open the season on the injured list. Swanson felt discomfort in his right elbow after throwing a bullpen and is set to undergo an MRI. Even though the team is still waiting for the results, the reliever is expected to open the season on the IL. Last season, Swanson posted a 5.03 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP across 39 1/3 innings of work. He tallied just 37 punchouts and served up walks at a modest 8.3 percent rate. However, during the 2023 campaign, Swanson was a dominant piece in the Toronto bullpen as he held a 2.97 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP. Across 66 2/3 innings, he tallied 75 punchouts and earned a career-high 29 holds while operating as the primary setup man. While Swanson is sidelined early in the campaign, fantasy managers should expect Yimi Garcia and Chad Green to be the setup options while Jeff Hoffman sees most of the save opportunities.
