Francis Martes News
Houston Astros pitcher Francis Martes was suspended for 162 games without pay after testing positive for Boldenone, a performance-enhancing drug. Martes was suspended for a similar offense last March, so he'll miss the entire 2020 season for his second violation. The 24-year-old Dominican last pitched in the big leagues in 2017, making 32 appearances (four starts) while posting a 5.80 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and striking out 69 hitters in 54 1/3 innings. He obviously won't be anywhere near the fantasy radar in 2020 and might find it tough to make a big league roster moving forward.
Francis Martes suffered another sub-par performance out of the bullpen during the Astros 14-7 win. Martes is one of the prized prospects of the Astros farm system and was called up to start a few games in June. Since then, Martes has been moved to the bullpen and after a few scoreless outings has been touched up in his last two appearances. In his last two outings, he has allowed five hits, six runs and two walks over his last 1 1/3 innings. His ERA is now 5.51 and has walked 16 batters through 32 2/3 innings and may need to return to the minors for more seasoning. The addition of Francisco Liriano further complicates matters and Martes may be squeezed out before the rosters expand again in September.
Francis Martes earned his first major league win as the Astros topped the A's 8-4 on Tuesday night. It wasn't easy for Martes, who walked three and allowed six hits in only 5 2/3 innings. But he held the A's offense to only three runs to pick up his first win. The highly touted prospect has excellent stuff but control issues are common for young pitchers. Look for Martes to get every opportunity to stick in the starting rotation moving forward and his potential is very high. He is an interesting, albeit dicey, fantasy pickup at this time but could pay huge dividends the rest of the season.
