Francisco Cervelli Sustains Another Concussion, Hits IL

Miami Marlins catcher Francisco Cervelli was placed on the injured list prior to Sundays contest against Washington due to a concussion, which has once again proven to be his bugaboo. Nearly forced into retirement due to concussions, Cervelli has returned this year and produced an .808 OPS in 62 plate appearances. With Jorge Alfaro back, the Marlins have a full-time catcher, but Cervelli presented a high-upside DFS selection this year when in the lineup. When hell be able to return from the injury is unknown at this stage.

Francisco Cervelli Lands On The Injured List

Miami Marlins catcher Francisco Cervelli was placed on the injured list after Saturday's game due to a concussion. It's unclear when Cervelli suffered the injury, but he essentially removed himself from Game 2 of Saturday's double header. Cervelli has dealt with several concussions in the past, so there is certainly some legitimate concern here. The Marlins will go forward with Jorge Alfaro as their starting catcher, but they'll need to make some kind of roster move before Sunday's game to ensure they have someone as a backup. The team's emergency catcher is presumably Logan Forsythe, but they'll of course want to have an actual second catcher on the roster.

Francisco Cervelli Departs Saturday’s Contest Early

Miami Marlins catcher Francisco Cervelli departed the second leg of Saturdays doubleheader against the Nationals early, forcing Jorge Alfaro back behind the dish after having caught Game 1. Cervelli has proven to be an adept second catcher for the Marlins, having reeled off an .808 OPS through his first 53 at-bats this season. Entering play Saturday, he had collected a hit in seven of his last eight games. With Alfaro back in the equation, Cervelli holds little season-long intrigue, except potentially in two-catcher formats. An extended absence would likely force Alfaro to see even more playing time than usual.

Francisco Cervelli Drives In Three Runs On Friday

Miami Marlins catcher Francisco Cervelli had a nice game on Friday, driving in three runs with a second inning home run. It ended up being his only hit in the game, but that'll do for the Marlins and for his fantasy owners. Cervelli is hitting .227 with an .837 OPS. His true value comes from the way he handles the makeshift Marlins pitching staff, but he has the pop to occasionally put a ball over the fence. Once Jorge Alfaro (COVID-19) returns, Cervelli will return to a part-time role, but until then, he'll continue to serve as the Marlins starting catcher.

Marlins Agree With Francisco Cervelli

The Miami Marlins agreed to a one-year deal with catcher Francisco Cervelli on Monday, according to a source. The deal is believed to be worth $2 million. Cervelli had more concussion problems in 2019 and played in just 48 games as a result with the Pirates and Braves. He hit a weak .213/.302/.348 with three home runs and 12 RBI. In his new home he'll serve as a backup to Jorge Alfaro and mostly be a veteran leader in the clubhouse with a rebuilding franchise. Cervelli could be forced into immediate retirement if he suffers another head injury, and he'll have no fantasy appeal leading into the 2020 season.

Braves Sign Francisco Cervelli

The Atlanta Braves signed free-agent catcher Francisco Cervelli to a major league contract on Saturday and optioned catching prospect Alex Jackson to Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move. Jackson has some appeal in the long term for his raw power (25 homers for Gwinnett), but there's a lot of swing and miss in his game. Cervelli is finally over his latest head injury, but he was hitting an atrocious .193/.279/.248 with a homer and five RBI in just 109 at-bats with the Pirates this year before he was released. He'll help spell Tyler Flowers behind the plate until Brian McCann is healthy. Cervelli should be ignored in fantasy.

Pirates Release Francisco Cervelli

The Pittsburgh Pirates released catcher Francisco Cervelli (concussion) on Wednesday. The 33-year-old was on a minor league rehab assignment but had been out since late May and was hitting just .193/.279/.248 with a homer and five RBI in 109 at-bats this season. Cervelli had a career-high 12 homers -- his first time ever with double-digit dingers -- and 57 RBI in 2018. He's had a long history of head injuries over his career, and it might be a long shot that he resurfaces at the big league level again if another team gives him a shot.

Francisco Cervelli Will No Longer Catch

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli (concussion) has decided to change positions and will no longer be a catcher. After suffering another concussion recently, Cervelli has decided that he no longer wants to play catcher. He began fielding grounders and taking some fly balls as well. He's played some first base and a little second and third as well. It's unclear where Cervelli will play, but it sounds like he's officially done behind the plate.

Francisco Cervelli Hoping To Return Next Weekend

As Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli recovers from a concussion that he sustained last month, he hopes to begin a rehab assignment this week before returning to the major league roster over the following weekend. He was cleared a week ago of all symptoms but has yet to begin any baseball workouts. Cervelli was having a poor year before landing on IL batting .193 with one homer, 11 runs, and five RBI in 34 games. Upon his return, everyday playing time won't be guaranteed as Elias Diaz has thrived in his place batting a crisp .285 with 19 RBI. Cervelli has a long concussion history and will be eased into action, making him ignorable in all formats.

Francisco Cervelli Not Experiencing Concussion Symptoms

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli (concussion) no longer has concussion symptoms, according to director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. However, Cervelli has yet to be cleared to begin working out, although that could change when he visits with a specialist later this week. The backstop has been out since he was hit on the back of the head by a broken bat on May 25 against the Dodgers. He was hitting just .193 (21-for-109) with one homer and five RBI on the year before his injury, too, so Cervelli belongs on the waiver wire in most formats. Elias Diaz has been the starting catcher in the meantime and has performed enough to be an option in two-catcher leagues.
