Ha-Seong Kim Opts Out, Becomes Free Agent on Monday

Atlanta Braves infielder Ha-Seong Kim opted out of his contract on Monday and has become a free agent, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Kim had offseason shoulder surgery and didn't make his 2025 debut with the Tampa Bay Rays until July 4. The 30-year-old South Korean native then dealt with a handful of other nagging injuries and was limited to just 48 games. Kim ended the campaign with the Atlanta Braves and hit a combined .234/.304/.345 with five home runs, 17 RBI, 19 runs scored, and six stolen bases in his 191 plate appearances. He opted out of the $16 million that he was owed for the 2026 season, but there's a chance that he'll return to Atlanta and serve as their starting shortstop to begin next season. Kim probably had his high-water mark in 2023 with the Padres, when he had 17 homers, 60 RBI, and 38 steals in 152 games, and his aggressive playing style leaves him vulnerable to injury.

Ha-Seong Kim Activated From 10-Day Injured List

The Atlanta Braves have activated shortstop Ha-Seong Kim (back) from the 10-day injured list. Kim, out since Aug. 21 with inflammation in his lower back, is now in position to make his debut with the Braves. The team claimed him off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, likely setting the stage for Kim to overtake Nick Allen as the Braves' regular shortstop for the rest of the season. Kim had a rough time in Tampa Bay, where the former San Diego Padre didn't debut until July 4 after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery. He has been on the IL twice this summer with back problems and has hit a subpar .214/.290/.321 with two homers, five RBI, five runs scored, and eight stolen bases over 24 games and 93 plate appearances. With Kim likely to exercise a $16 million player option for 2026 in the offseason, the Braves are gambling that he'll rebound with a change of scenery.

Ha-Seong Kim Joining Braves

The Atlanta Braves claimed shortstop Ha-Seong Kim (back) off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. To make room for Kim, the Braves transferred third baseman Austin Riley (abdomen) to the 60-day injured list. Kim has been on the 10-day IL with inflammation in his lower back since Aug. 21, but the Braves are expected to activate him before they face the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. After spending his first four seasons with the San Diego Padres, Kim joined the Rays on a two-year, $29 million guarantee last winter. The Rays knew when they signed Kim that he could miss the beginning of the season after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder. As it turns out, he didn't debut with the Rays until July 4. Since then, back problems have forced Kim to the IL twice. The 29-year-old ended up playing just 24 games for the Rays and hitting a lackluster .214/.290/.321 with two homers, five RBI, five runs scored, and six stolen bases in 93 plate appearances. Tampa Bay will move forward with prospect Carson Williams as its primary shortstop, while Kim could bump the light-hitting Nick Allen out of a starting role in Atlanta.

Ha-Seong Kim Not Expected to Return Until Monday

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Ha-Seong Kim (back) is not expected to return from the 10-day injured list until Monday, at the earliest, according to Ryan Bass of Bally Sports. MLB rosters expand to 28 players on Monday, and that's when Kim figures to return to the big leagues after dealing with back inflammation that landed him on the shelf on Aug. 21. The 29-year-old didn't make his debut with Tampa until early July after having offseason surgery on his shoulder, and he's pretty much been banged up with various ailments ever since. The South Korean native has only suited up for 24 games in his first year with the team and has gone 18-for-84 (.214) with two home runs, five RBI, five runs and six stolen bases. With prospect Carson Williams now in town, it's unclear if Kim will return to everyday duties at shortstop when he rejoins the Rays.

Ha-Seong Kim Takes Grounders on Wednesday, Nearing Return

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Ha-Seong Kim (back) is coming along well in his recovery from lower-back inflammation. After Kim took infield grounders on Wednesday, manager Kevin Cash said the Rays are "happy with the progression." Kim, who landed on the 10-day IL on Aug. 20, could return as early as Saturday. After recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, Kim debuted July 4 and has hit a disappointing .214/.290/.321 with two homers, five RBI, five runs scored, and six stolen bases in 93 plate appearances. Back issues have forced the 29-year-old to the IL twice since late July. Standout shortstop prospect Carson Williams has filled in for Kim and gone 6-for-19 with a homer, five RBI, a stolen base, and 8:1 K:BB in his first 20 trips to the plate in the majors.

Ha-Seong Kim Lands on Injured List With Back Stiffness

The Tampa Bay Rays placed shortstop Ha-Seong Kim (back) on the 10-day injured list on Thursday with back stiffness and are calling up top infield prospect Carson Williams from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Kim was scratched from Wednesday night's game against the New York Yankees and will now miss the next week and a half as well with yet another injury. The 29-year-old didn't make his debut with the Rays this year until July 4 after recovering from offseason surgery, and he's been banged up with other injuries as well ever since his return. Kim has played in only 29 games in his first year in Tampa and is sporting a weak .214/.290/.321 slash line with two homers, five RBI and six stolen bases. The Rays haven't released their lineup for Thursday's game against St. Louis, but expect Williams to be at the 6.

Ha-Seong Kim Scratched With Lower-Back Tightness on Wednesday

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Ha-Seong Kim (back) was scratched on Wednesday against the New York Yankees because of tightness in his lower back, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays started Tristan Gray at short in Kim's place. Kim is considered day-to-day, so it doesn't seem like a serious issue, though it's worth noting he spent time on the 10-day injured list earlier this summer with a low-back strain. After recovering from offseason surgery on his right shoulder, Kim debuted on June 4 and has struggled over 24 games and 93 plate appearances. The former San Diego Padre has hit .214/.290/.321 line with two homers, five RBI, five runs scored, and six stolen bases.

Ha-Seong Kim Resting on Friday

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Ha-Seong Kim will head to the bench ahead of Friday's game against the Seattle Mariners. This appears to be a routine rest day for Kim who has struggled since returning from the injured list. Kim has gone 3-for-18 at the plate with seven strikeouts since his return on August 1. Taylor Walls will cover shortstop and bat eighth versus right-hander Luis Castillo on Friday. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups and get Kim on their bench.

Ha-Seong Kim Reinstated and Starting on Friday

The Tampa Bay Rays reinstated infielder Ha-Seong Kim (back) from the 10-day injured list on Friday before their series opener against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers and left-hander Clayton Kershaw. Kim will immediately slot back in at the 6 and will hit second against Kershaw, who he has hit .222 against with a home run and two RBI in his career. The 29-year-old middle infielder missed the minimum amount of time due to lower-back tightness and now returns as the team's everyday shortstop. The South Korean native didn't make his debut with Tampa until July 4 after having offseason shoulder surgery and has been banged up off and on ever since his return. He offers modest power and speed and has gone 7-for-31 (.226) with a homer, three RBI and four stolen bases in his first 10 games played with the Rays. Kim is ideally middle-infield insurance in deeper leagues.

Ha-Seong Kim Lands on Injured List With Back Strain

The Tampa Bay Rays placed infielder Ha-Seong Kim (back) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 22) on Friday with a lower-back strain and reinstated outfielder Jonny DeLuca (shoulder) from the 60-day IL in a corresponding move. Taylor Walls is starting at shortstop and batting eighth on Friday against Cincinnati Reds right-hander Nick Martinez and should be Tampa's primary option at the 6 with Kim sidelined again. Kim didn't make his Rays debut until July 4 after having offseason surgery, and now he finds himself back on the IL after only 10 games played. The 29-year-old has gone 7-for-31 (.226) at the plate with a homer, three RBI and four steals. Kim also dealt with a calf injury after his season debut and is more susceptible to injuries due to his reckless style of play, mainly on the basepaths. Walls is a glove-first player who has hit .214 (52-for-243) on the year with three homers but 13 steals.
