The St. Louis Cardinals released relief pitcher Jason Motte on Thursday. He will be a free agent and will reportedly listen to offers from other teams, but the veteran right-hander is willing to come back to the Cardinals and play at Triple-A Memphis if he does not get any other offers to his liking. He struggled this spring in Grapefruit League play, allowing six runs on 13 hits and two walks in just 5 1/3 innings. He'd be no more than a long reliever even if he did find a job in a big league bullpen, giving him no fantasy value.
The St. Louis Cardinals signed free-agent relief pitcher Jason Motte to a minor league contract on Friday. Motte pitched in the Cardinals system from 2006 until 2014. He's bounced aroundwith the Cubs, Rockies and Braves over the past three seasons. Last year, he posted a 3.54 ERA in 40 2/3 innings of work. He'll be competing for a role in middle relief and won't have any fantasy value.
Jason Motte Leading Strong Bullpen Performance In May
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Jason Motte ranks at the top of the Atlanta bullpen without a single run allowed during the month of May. Relievers Arodys Vizcaino and Sam Freeman have matched that with a 0.00 ERA this month, though Motte leads with 10 relief appearances. The team has seen consistent performance from their primary arms out of the pen. Closer Jim Johnson has been perfect in save opportunities with a 1.08 ERA. Reliever Jose Ramirez sits at the bottom of the top options with a 1.17 ERA in his seven appearances. While the starting rotation has often struggled to keep opposing offenses from scoring, valuable relief efforts have kept the team close to the .500 mark.
