Padres starter Jered Weaver (hip) announced his retirement on twitter today. The 34-year-old has been on the disabled list since May 21 and is 0-5 on the season with a horrendous 7.44 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. The former ace of the Los Angeles Angels has seen his velocity dip into the low-80's in recent years, and has not been effective since the 2014 season. Weaver finishes his 12-year career with a 3.65 ERA and three all-star appearances, all with the Angels.
San Diego starter Jered Weaver (hip) remains on the 10-day disabled list, but he is slowly making his way back toward a potential return. Weaver threw three innings in a simulated game on Friday with no complications. Manager Andy Green said he doesn't want to rush the 34-year old back too soon, so there is no current timetable for his activation. Weaver has an 0-5 record and 7.44 ERA this season.
Jered Weaver Throwing Bullpen Sessions More Frequently
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Jered Weaver (hip) has been throwing bullpen sessions every two days to keep him loose and increase the range of movement in his delivery. Weaver was placed on the 10-day disabled list with left hip inflammation but not before seeing his ERA inflate to 7.44 as a Padre. Weaver himself sounds cautiously optimistic about a potential return to the mound. "If I get it back, I get it back. If not, it was a good ride. But I'm not ready to give up. I still know I can get it back, so I just keep working." The next step will be a rehab appearance in the minors, but it's unclear when that might happen. Weaver really isn't attractive in any fantasy format.
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Jered Weaver (hip) isn't done yet. The 34-year-old starter has thrown two bullpen sessions since being put on the disabled list May 20 for left hip inflammation. He is determined to keep pitching despite a woeful start to this season, his first away from the Angels. "I wouldn't still be sticking around if I didn't think I could get it back." Weaver owns a 7.44 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and has given up 16 home runs in 42 1/3 innings. He should be left alone in fantasy leagues, even if he rejoins the rotation, as he is nothing more than an innings eater at this point.
Jered Weaver Placed On 10-Day DL After Terrible Outing
A day after getting torched for seven runs in less than one inning, San Diego Padres veteran starting pitcher Jered Weaver has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with hip inflammation. Pitcher Jose Valdez will replace him on the roster. The move to San Diego hasn't been a good one for Weaver, as he's 0-5 with a 7.44 ERA. Weaver missed time during the 2015 season with the same injury. The right-hander should be left to the waiver wire in nearly all fantasy formats.
Jered Weaver Torched by Arizona, Doesn't Survive First Inning
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Jered Weaver may not be in the San Diego starting rotation much longer after Friday night's performance. Weaver couldn't make it out of the first inning after surrendering seven runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning. The damage came from two home runs, including a three-run shot right off the bat from Diamondbacks third baseman Jake Lamb and a two-run blast by infielder Brandon Drury. The final insult came when starting pitcher Taijuan Walker drove in a run, ending Weaver's night and possibly his career. Weaver was already on thin ice, but it appears now that he has exhausted everything that may have been left in the tank. He has an 0-5 record and a 7.44 ERA on the season.
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Jered Weaver did exactly what he needed to in order to keep his job in the rotation on Sunday. Weaver threw six innings of one-run ball against the White Sox before being let down by the bullpen and robbed of his first victory as a Padre. Weaver wasn't dominating, striking out only three batters, but he did keep the ball from leaving the yard for the first time in eight starts. Weaver may have preserved his status on the roster, but he still holds practically no fantasy value. His steadily declining strikeout rate is down to 5.05 per nine innings, and he is still 0-4 on the season.
