Boston Red Sox third baseman Jhonny Peralta was released on Thursday. Peralta had spent his entire time with the Triple-A affiliate Pawtucket. In 41 plate appearances Peralta managed to hit just .200 with four runs and five RBI while striking out 11 times. The veteran was signed June 23 to provide emergency depth at third base. With call-ups Deven Marrero and Tzu-Wei Lin filling in admirably for the big club the Peralta experiment is over. The move will also open up a roster spot for standout prospect Rafael Devers to be promoted.

The team now has 10 days to trade him or release him. Given his track record, he'll likely find another team interested in his services this season, but his days as a starter are almost certainly over. He can be safely dropped in mixed leagues.

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Jhonny Peralta may not be on the Cardinals for long, according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com. Peralta is the only player in baseball with at least 50 at-bats to not have an extra-base hit or an RBI. With third baseman Jedd Gyorko taking charge of third base and infielder Greg Garcia jumping ahead of Peralta on the backup depth chart, Peralta may be the odd-man out when the Cardinals need to make a roster move. He holds no fantasy value at this point.
Stephen Piscotty and Jhonny Peralta Likely to Come Off the DL on Friday
St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak indicated on Tuesday that outfielder Stephen Piscotty and infielder Jhonny Peralta are both likely to be activated from the disabled list on Friday. Piscotty suffered a hamstring injury while Peralta was dealing with complications from an upper respiratory infection. Piscotty is likely to find everyday playing time when he comes back, but Peralta will fill more of a utility role.
St. Louis Cardinals infielder Jhonny Peralta will be sent to Memphis to join the Cardinals' Triple-A team as part of a rehab assignment. He will report to Memphis in a few days and work his way back to the roster. He likely won't find much playing time once he returns to St. Louis, with third baseman Jedd Gyorko playing extremely well with everyday playing time.
