Joe Rock Offers Speculative Waiver Appeal After Promotion

Chicago White Sox pitcher Joe Rock is joining the major-league roster as David Sandlin heads back to Triple-A Charlotte. Rock was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays last month and has been stretching out as a starter in the minors since joining the organization. He has limited MLB experience, with three career relief appearances, so fantasy managers should view this as a speculative move until his role becomes clearer. Rock's fantasy appeal comes from the chance that Chicago could use him for length, especially with the White Sox continuing to shuffle arms. He posted a 5.40 ERA over 13 games with Triple-A Durham before the trade, and only slightly improved with Charlotte, posting a 4.00 ERA over nine frames, so there is a clear risk in the profile. Given his unclear role, Rock is only worth monitoring in deeper formats for the time being.

Ian Seymour, Joe Rock Promoted to Major Leagues

The Tampa Bay Rays promoted left-handed pitching prospects Ian Seymour and Joe Rock to the major leagues. Seymour made his MLB debut earlier this season and was quite effective during his first taste, posting a 1.69 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP through 10 2/3 innings. He has spent most of his time with Triple-A Durham and has flashed high strikeout upside, tallying 104 strikeouts across 86 innings of work. Rock has logged two innings in the major leagues this season and allowed two runs and four hits. Through 81 2/3 innings with the Durham Bulls, Rock posted a modest 4.63 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. He tallied only 71 strikeouts and allowed 33 walks. With Zack Littell now in Cincinnati, Seymour could have an opportunity to start, while Rock will likely shift to the bullpen.

Rays Promoting Joe Rock to the Majors

The Tampa Bay Rays are promoting left-handed pitching prospect Joe Rock to the major leagues. In a corresponding move, the Rays are designating right-handed pitcher Forrest Whitley for assignment. Rock is considered the No. 21-ranked prospect in the system on MLB.com. The left-hander has yet to earn the call to the majors since being selected in the 2021 MLB Draft out of Ohio State. This season, Rock has appeared in 15 games for Triple-A Durham (14 starts) and posted a modest 4.81 ERA with a 1.49 WHIP. During this stretch, Rock has struck out 63 batters and allowed a high 30 walks. With the Tampa Bay rotation full, fantasy managers should expect Rock to be deployed out of the bullpen. Given that he will likely have a low-leverage role, he is best to leave on the waiver wire.
