Braves Call Up Jonathan Lucroy

The Atlanta Braves called up catcher Jonathan Lucroy from Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday and optioned catcher William Contreras to Gwinnett in a corresponding move. The team also transferred left-hander Grant Dayton (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list. The veteran Lucroy had five hits in 14 at-bats with the Washington Nationals earlier this season but had a slash line of just .220/.351/.330 with two home runs and 16 RBI in 31 games with Gwinnett before the call-up. The 35-year-old will split time with Kevan Smith behind the dish, and he may not even be much of an option in two-catcher leagues. He's behind the plate and batting eight on Wednesday against Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Wil Crowe. Contreras hit just .204 (29-for-142) but did have seven home runs and 21 RBI for Atlanta.

Jonathan Lucroy Signs With Braves

Free-agent backstop Jonathan Lucroy secured a minor-league contract with the catching-starved Atlanta Braves on Friday. The 34-year-old veteran has played parts of 12 seasons in the majors and appeared in five games with the Washington Nationals earlier this season before being released. During that brief stretch, he hit .357. Atlanta would be Lucroy's eighth team since 2017 and he hasn't been fantasy relevant for a few years now. However, he could be in line for some decent playing time after the club lost No. 1 catcher Travis d'Arnaud to a season-ending injury. The club is currently holding down the fort with rookie William Contreras and 38-year-old Jeff Mathis.

Jonathan Lucroy To Catch Max Scherzer Tuesday

The Washington Nationals will activate catcher Jonathan Lucroy to catch starting pitcher Max Scherzer in the team's first regular season game of the season on Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves. Lucroy needs eight more days to reach 10 years in the major leagues. The 34-year-old backstop will be replacing Yan Gomes, who was among those on the roster that were placed in the league's COVID-19 protocols. Lucroy was recently signed to a minor league deal and will be a short-term replacement while the Nationals are short-handed in the early going. He will hit eighth on Tuesday against Atlanta left-hander Drew Smyly. You can avoid Lucroy in most season-long leagues, and he'll be a cheap yet low-upside DFS selection in Washington's first game of the 2021 season.

Jonathan Lucroy Signs With Nationals

The Washington Nationals signed catcher Jonathan Lucroy on Saturday night. Lucroy spent spring training with the White Sox but did not make their roster. Washington has yet to play this season thanks to a coronavirus outbreak. Perhaps this signing is a hint that either Yan Gomes or Alex Avila is one of the sidelined players, but that's just speculation, so wait to hear more. As far as Lucroy is concerned, he hasn't had a wOBA or wxOBA better than .291 since 2017, or better than .311 since 2016. He may become a player to pick up in two-catcher leagues if he plays and shows something, but before then, waivers is where he ought to be.

Jonathan Lucroy Joins White Sox On Minor League Deal

The Chicago White Sox and catcher Jonathan Lucroy have come to terms on a Minor League contract. Lucroy will be looking to make the Opening Day roster as a backup to Yasmani Grandal, whom the team has utilized at both first base and designated hitter since joining Chicago. With James McCann having departed for the Mets, the White Sox will give the veteran Lucroy a chance to earn the No. 2 job. Lucroy appeared in one game last season with Boston, but did not log a plate appearance. His last full season came in 2019, which was split between the Angels and Cubs, where he delivered a .232/.305/.355 slash line in 101 games. No longer the stalwart of fantasy leagues that he was from '13-16, Lucroy will simply enter spring camp looking to nab a roster spot.

Jonathan Lucroy Clears Waivers, To Remain With Red Sox

Boston Red Sox catcher Jonathan Lucroy will report to the teams alternate training site after clearing waivers Saturday. Currently, the Red Sox are rolling with the duo of Christian Vazquez and Kevin Plawecki behind the dish. Since having been an All-Star with the Brewers in 2016, Lucroy has appeared for six different organizations, unable to become a fantasy relevant option in most leagues. Its difficult to see Lucroy becoming anything but a selective DFS play in 2020, but an absence from Vazquez could pave the way for Lucroy to get the call back to Boston.

Red Sox DFA Jonathan Lucroy

The Boston Red Sox have designated catcher Jonathan Lucroy for assignment. The team announced the move on Wednesday and will move forward with Christian Vazquez and Kevin Plawecki behind the plate. The former All-Star has fallen off of a cliff over the last three years and at age 34, its fair to question if he will get another shot with a new team. Lucroy only appeared in one game as a defensive replacement with the Red Sox.

Jonathan Lucroy Could See Time At First Base

Boston Red Sox catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who worked with pitchers Ryan Brasier, Colten Brewer and Brandon Workman during the shutdown, could see some time at first base in 2020. Boston will likely start the year with catchers Lucroy, Christian Vazquez and Kevin Plawecki on the active roster. Lucroy has taken ground balls at first base in summer camp and has made 35 career starts at the position. He is a right-handed hitting option to platoon with the left-handed hitting Mitch Moreland. The 34-year-old veteran has bounced around quite a bit since leaving the Brewers in 2016 and hit just .232 with eight homers and 36 RBI in 101 games with the Angels and Cubs in 2019. At best, he might be a cheap DFS play against left-handed pitchers this year.

Jonathan Lucroy Expected To Be Part Of Red Sox 60-Player Pool

Despite not being listed on the initial 47-player list invited to camp due to the framework of his contract, Boston Red Sox catcher Jonathan Lucroy is expected to be included in the pool of players invited to camp ahead of July 1, according to a source. The veteran will join five catchers who were on the Red Sox initial list released ahead of Sunday's deadline, including Jett Bandy, Juan Centeno, Kevin Plawecki, Christian Vazquez and Connor Wong. Lucroy was productive during the spring with six hits, three RBI, three runs scored, seven walks, a pair of doubles and an .881 OPS through 27 plate appearances. The 34-year-old will be competing for the backup catcher job but does not project to carry any significant fantasy value if he is to make the Opening Day Red Sox roster.

Jonathan Lucroy Had Surgery On Neck

Boston Red Sox catcher Jonathan Lucroy (neck) said he had surgery for a herniated disc in his neck that had been bothering him for the last three years. "I'd like to sit here and make excuses and say it's the reason I haven't been good, but I'm not going to. It did affect me," Lucroy said. The 33-year-old was an All-Star in 2016 with the Rangers and Brewers, but he's fallen off since then offensively. He remains a strong defensive backstop, but he'll have to battle with Kevin Plawecki this spring to be Christian Vazquez's backup in Beantown. At best, Lucroy will be catching depth in AL-only leagues if he wins the backup gig out of camp.
