Jose Lobaton News
The Chicago Cubs have placed catcher Jose Lobaton (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder sprain. Lobaton injured his shoulder when he went down hard running through first base in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday. Lobaton was hitless in 11 at-bats this season. The Cubs are now onto their fifth backup catcher of the season with the club calling up catcher Taylor Gushue. Gushue will be making his big league debut when he enters a game. Gushue was having a productive season for Triple-A Iowa with a .272 batting average to go along with five home runs and 27 RBI. Catcher Willson Contreras remains the man behind the dish for the Cubs and Gushue can be avoided in all formats.
Chicago Cubs catcher Jose Lobaton (shoulder) could be slated to miss extended time with a shoulder injury. In Tuesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Lobaton took a tumble while attempting to run out a ground ball. He fell onto his shoulder and was in a great deal of pain. After the game, Cubs manager David Ross said that he feared Lobaton could have suffered a separated shoulder. If that's the case, he'll indeed be out for awhile. Lobaton is scheduled for X-rays on Wednesday. He's been the team's primary backup to Willson Contreras lately, but the team will likely need to find another backup for now.
New York Mets catcher Jose Lobaton will be designated for assignment on Tuesday, the team announced. This is one of several roster moves the Mets announced on Monday, coinciding with the release of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and the recalling of first baseman Dominic Smith and second baseman Ty Kelly. With Kevin Plawecki back from injury and in a platoon with Devin Mesoraco, it didnt make much sense to hold onto Lobaton on the 40-man roster. Across 53 plate appearances for the Mets this season, the 33-year-old is slashing .152/.264/.239 without any home runs in 53 plate appearances. Hell probably get a minor league deal if he wants one somewhere, perhaps with the Washington Nationals with whom hes spent the last five seasons.
