Angels
Los Angeles Angels pitchers Sam Bachman (shoulder) and Jose Quijada (elbow) have continued their throwing programs in spring training. Bachman is recovering from right-shoulder surgery last September and was planning to throw from 75 to 90 feet on Monday. Quijada, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery on his left elbow last May, was planning to throw up to 120 feet on Monday. Bachman will begin the 2024 season on the injured list and is expected to miss at least the first month of the 2024 season. He's not a lock to join the big-league roster when he's activated. Quijada will open the year on the 60-day injured list and probably won't make his 2024 debut until after the All-Star break.

Jose Quijada Transferred To 60-Day Injured List
Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Jose Quijada (elbow) has been transferred to the 60-day injured list. The 28-year-old reliever underwent Tommy John surgery last May and will miss the majority of the 2024 season. He's got a shot to make it back late in the second half of the year but even when he does come back, he's not on the fantasy radar. Quijada owns a career 4.89 ERA over 108 2/3 career innings.

Jose Quijada Undergoing Tommy John Surgery
Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Jose Quijada (elbow) requires Tommy John surgery, which will end his 2023 season. It's a tough blow for Quijada, who managed to record four saves in April and staked his claim atop the closer's depth chart for the Halos. He was battered for five runs by the Royals on April 21, though, ultimately ceding ninth-inning duties to Carlos Estevez. Quijada's injury further solidifies Estevez as the reliever to own in fantasy leagues, with fairly little opposition in the Angels bullpen contending with him at this time. Estevez has been superb in save opportunities this year, going a flawless 6-for-6 in those scenarios while posting an excellent 1.23 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 14.2 innings of action.

Jose Quijada Records His Fourth Save Friday
Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin called on southpaw Jose Quijada for the ninth inning in Friday's 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals. He struck out a pair while allowing one hit, a single, and picked up his fourth save of the season. Quijada has yet to give up a run this season over eight innings and has recorded eight strikeouts and one walk. Carlos Estevez, the presumed closer who has a couple of saves himself, got the eighth inning on Friday. The Angels closer situation should still be considered a committee, but it looks like Quijada is leading the pack.

Jose Quijada Gets First Save Wednesday
Los Angeles Angels left-hander Jose Quijada picked up his first save of the season on Wednesday after pitching the ninth inning of the 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners. He allowed one hit but struck out one and kept the Mariners from scoring. It was Quijada's second appearance of the season, and thus far, he owns a 0.00 ERA with one strikeout across two innings. The Angels closer situation is pretty murky right now, as most in the baseball community figured a mix of Carlos Estevez, Jimmy Herget, and Ryan Tepera would share opportunities. But after posting a 3.98 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 30.8% strikeout rate over 40.2 innings in 2022, manager Phil Nevin might feel comfortable using Quijada in the ninth inning on occasion. It would be wise to stay away from the arms in the Angels bullpen until the situation becomes clearer.

Jose Quijada Earns Save For Angels Tuesday
Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Jose Quijada got the first shot at a save after the team traded away closer Raisel Iglesias in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Athletics. Quijada came in to pitch the ninth inning with a two-run lead and turned in a 1-2-3 outing with no strikeouts, picking up his second save of the season. With Iglesias gone, it remains to be seen how the Angels will approach save situations for the rest of the season, although they may not see that many. Quijada has a solid 3.15 ERA with a 10.80 K/9 rate through 20 innings pitched this season, but he also has a high 5.40 BB/9 rate. With several other veteran relievers in the bullpen, fantasy managers should wait to see what approach the Angels take. That said, Ryan Tepera or Archie Bradley seem like better speculative adds, as both have had past closing experience.

Jose Quijada Placed On Injured List
Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Jose Quijada (oblique) has been placed on the 10-day injured list. This move is retroactive April 8, so hopefully Quijada won't miss significant time. The 26-year-old was made one appearance this season, but was impressive during the second half of the year in 2021. The Angels have recalled left-hander Brian Moran to fill the open roster spot. He posted a 2.16 ERA with 65 strikeouts over 50 innings in Triple-A last season.
