Vargas had a busy week as the Twins tried to get him through waivers earlier, only to have the Cincinnati Reds claim him. The Twins then got Vargas back two days later after Cincinnati waived the slugger. Vargas is blocked by both Joe Mauer and Logan Morrison at the big league level and will probably need an injury to make a big league impact this season.

Cave hit 20 homers in the minors in 2017 and according to chief baseball officer Derek Falvey, has an "overall appealing skill set." Manager Paul Molitor told reporters that he might get Cave at-bats with the team as early as Saturday.

He drew some interest from pro teams in Japan and Korea two winters ago but the Twins were unwilling to sell his contract. With a new front office in place, perhaps there is a chance they allow Vargas to pursue a career overseas if foreign teams come calling again. If he remains with the Twins, Vargas is blocked by Joe Mauer, Miguel Sano, Mitch Garver, and Robbie Grossman, so big league at-bats may be hard for him to come by.
