Byron Buxton Could Waive his No-Trade Clause

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton wants to play for a winner and may reconsider his stance for certain teams if the Twins continue to break up their roster, a major-league source told The Athletic's Dan Hayes. Buxton, a two-time All-Star, has three years and $45 million left on his current contract. He also has full no-trade protection through next season and the ability to block trades to five teams in 2027 and 2028. The Twins organization is in a precarious state this offseason after trading away shortstop Carlos Correa and most of their bullpen over the summer. Baseball Prospectus estimates the team's current payroll at $95 million, which is a steep drop-off from where the Twins have been the last five seasons. Buxton's decision on whether to waive his no-trade clause could depend on whether Minnesota trades away one or both of starting pitchers Joe Ryan and Pablo Lopez.

Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez on the Trade Block?

The rebuilding Minnesota Twins have two of the best trade chips in right-handed starting pitchers Joe Ryan and Pablo Lopez, and could continue their aggressive rebuild by trading them away this offseason, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. Lopez is under team control for two more years at $21.5 million per year, while Ryan has two years of club control and is salary-arbitration eligible after making $3 million in 2025. Ryan, 29, ended his season by giving up five or more runs in four of his last seven outings, but overall, he had a career-best 3.47 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 194:39 K:BB over his 171 innings in his fifth big-league season. Ryan was an All-Star for the first time in his career. Lopez, meanwhile, had an injury-plagued campaign, missing two months early in the year with a Grade 2 teres major strain before being shut down with a right-forearm strain in late September. The 29-year-old is already considered fully healthy, though, and should be a full-go in spring training.

Pablo Lopez to Have Normal Offseason

Minnesota Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said on Tuesday that right-hander Pablo Lopez (forearm) is "fully healthy" and will "be able to have a normal offseason routine," according to Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic. Lopez missed time early in the 2025 season with a Grade 2 teres major strain and was shut down in late September due to a mild right-forearm strain. The 29-year-old has since recovered and should be a full-go for spring training and the 2026 regular season next year. It's great news for the Twins, as Lopez was pitching like a top-of-the-rotation starter when he was healthy. The Venezuelan hurler finished his third year in Minnesota with a 5-4 record, career-low 2.74 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 73 strikeouts, and 20 walks in 75 2/3 frames over his 14 starts. Lopez is a peg below a true ace for fantasy purposes, and his home ballpark should continue to be a plus for his 2026 value if he remains with the Twins.

Luke Keaschall to Miss Rest of Season With Thumb Injury

Minnesota Twins rookie second baseman Luke Keaschall (thumb) will miss the rest of the season with a sprained left thumb. The 23-year-old will visit a specialist next week to determine whether he'll require surgery. A second-round pick in 2023, Keaschall rose quickly through the Twins' system and debuted with the club on April 18. Keaschall's career got off to a rough start, though, as he suffered a broken bone in his right arm in his seventh game and didn't return until the first week of August. Injuries aside, Keaschall's performance was one of the few positives to take from an awful season for the Twins. In 49 games and 207 plate appearances, he slashed an outstanding .302/.382/.445 with four homers, 28 RBI, 25 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases.

Luke Keaschall Absent on Wednesday

Minnesota Twins infielder Luke Keaschall (thumb) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Wednesday's game against the Texas Rangers. This doesn't come as a shock after Keaschall was removed from Tuesday's game. Keaschall suffered a left thumb injury while stealing second base. For now, Keaschall should be considered day-to-day, but this injury could end his season. The rookie infielder has been solid at the plate during his 200-plus plate appearances in the big leagues. He's slashing .302/.382/.445 with four home runs, 28 RBI, and 14 steals in 49 games. Fantasy managers should check back on Thursday for another update on his status.

Luke Keaschall Exits Tuesday With Left-Thumb Sprain

Minnesota Twins second baseman Luke Keaschall (thumb) exited Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Rangers with a left thumb sprain, per the Athletic's Dan Hayes. Keaschall went 0-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base before being replaced defensively by Edouard Julien in the fourth inning. The 23-year-old described his thumb as swollen and will undergo an MRI on Wednesday. Keaschall has put forth a solid rookie performance since rejoining the Twins at the beginning of August, slashing .302/.382/.445 with four home runs, 28 RBI, and 14 stolen bases in 207 plate appearances.

Pablo Lopez Goes to Injured List

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez (forearm) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday. This comes after Lopez was forced to make an early exit from Friday's start due to a forearm strain. The team is calling it a mild strain, so Lopez will head to the shelf for the rest of the season. The Twins are not of playoff contention, so that'll be the last time we see Lopez in 2025. He'll finish the season with a 2.74 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and a 73/20 K/BB ratio across 75.2 innings of work. Fantasy managers can go ahead and drop Lopez in redraft formats. In a corresponding move, right-hander Mick Abel has been recalled from Triple-A. Abel figures to take over his spot in the rotation over the last week or so.

Pablo Lopez Expected to Undergo MRI on Forearm

Minnesota Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez (forearm) exited Friday's 6-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians with forearm tightness and is expected to undergo an MRI on Saturday, per Matthew Leach of MLB.com. Lopez suffered the injury on a diving play in the third inning, but he stayed in through the fourth and allowed two earned runs on the night. This could bring an early end to an injury-marred season for Lopez, who returned on Sept. 5 after missing three months with a teres major strain in his shoulder. Lopez has made 14 starts this year and gone 5-4 with a 2.74 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, 73 strikeouts, and 20 walks in 75 2/3 innings.

Matt Wallner Goes on Injured List With Oblique Strain

The Minnesota Twins announced on Friday that they placed outfielder Matt Wallner (oblique) on the 10-day injured list with a right-oblique strain and recalled outfielder DaShawn Keirsey Jr. from Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move. With the Twins out of postseason contention, that will be it for Wallner for the rest of the 2025 season. The 27-year-old former first-rounder played in a career-high 104 games this year in his fourth year in the big leagues and had a disappointing .202 average (68-for-336) in 392 trips to the plate. However, the left-handed hitter did club 22 home runs and added 40 RBI, 47 runs scored, and four stolen bases. With Wallner out for the last week-plus of the season, James Outman figures to see more playing time in Minnesota's outfield. Outman is in right field and is batting ninth on Friday against the Cleveland Guardians and left-hander Parker Messick.

Matt Wallner Dealing with Back Spasms

Minnesota Twins outfielder Matt Wallner (back) left Wednesday night's game against the Yankees in the fifth inning after going 0-for-1 with a walk. Wallner is considered day-to-day, but since the Twins have a day off Thursday, he could return to action Friday without missing a start. The 27-year-old lefty is hitting only .202 on the season, but does have a new career-high 22 homers in his 104 games. He has a .262 ISO and .334 wOBA and is a solid source of lefty power in the Minnesota outfield despite his low average. He has been part of a crowded rotation in the outfield, so he could get fewer games over the last couple of series if his back continues to be an issue.

Eduardo Tait  • C  •  Twins

Eduardo Tait Helps Cedar Rapids to Victory in Game 2

Minnesota Twins catching prospect Eduardo Tait helped High-A Cedar Rapids to a 5-3 playoff victory over High-A Beloit (Miami) on Thursday, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of doubles, driving in two runs and scoring twice in the contest. The win evened the series at one game apiece in the best-of-three series, with the winner headed to the Midwest League championship. Tait was a big riser in the prospect ranks this year, debuting at No. 93 overall and now sitting at No. 52. The Panamanian backstop began the season at Single-A in the Philadelphia organization, coming to the Twins in the Jhoan Duran trade, and moved to High-A in late July. The 19-year-old got going in late August, hitting .281 over his final 14 games, which included seven multi-hit efforts. Look for the Twins' second-ranked prospect to test the upper levels of the minors next season, and the offensive-minded catcher should be monitored in dynasty leagues.

Royce Lewis  • 3B  •  Twins

Royce Lewis Launches Two Homers Monday Night

Minnesota Twins third baseman Royce Lewis went yard twice in Monday's 12-3 thumping of the Angels. Lewis finished 2-for-5 with four RBI on his pair of two-run blasts, and both his homers came off Caden Dana before the starter left in the fifth inning. Lewis is up to 12 homers on the season now, and seven of those smashes have come in his last 20 games. Over that span, Lewis is hitting .273 with a .376 wOBA and a 33.9% hard-hit rate. He's still only hitting .237 on the season, but he's been heating up enough lately to still be a clear part of the team's core going forward. Lewis has also been more aggressive on the bases lately, with six stolen bases in his last 20 games, giving him seven on the season. He's racking up good numbers at this point and can be a solid pickup for the stretch run if he's available on the waiver wire.

Byron Buxton Absent with Knee Issue

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (knee) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Monday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. This doesn't come as a surprise after Buxton was forced to exit Sunday's contest due to a knee contusion. It wouldn't be shocking to see Buxton take a few days off to recover. This doesn't sound like the type of issue that will land Buxton on the shelf. Austin Martin, James Outman, and Matt Wallner will cover the outfield for Monday's contest. Fantasy managers should check back on Tuesday for another update on Buxton's status.

Byron Buxton Exits Early With Knee Contusion

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (knee) exited the team's game against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday with a left-knee contusion. Buxton suffered the injury on a hit by pitch in the top of the fifth inning, but he stayed in until the Twins replaced him in center field with James Outman in the bottom of the sixth. Buxton finished the afternoon 1-for-2 with a solo home run, giving him the first 30-homer season of his career. The oft-injured 31-year-old standout has played in 109 games - his most since 2017 - and slashed a robust .271/.332/.562 with 74 RBI, 85 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases in 467 plate appearances. Fantasy managers should stay tuned for updates on Buxton's knee.

Ryan Jeffers  • C  •  Twins

Ryan Jeffers Out on Saturday

Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers (head) is out of the lineup on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals. Mickey Gasper will fill in behind the plate and hit seventh versus right-hander Stephen Kolek. Jeffers will take a seat for the second straight game after leaving early in an 11-8 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. He was diagnosed with a head contusion after taking two foul tips off the mask, but the 29-year-old may not require a stint on the injured list. Jeffers has played in 114 games this season and hit .262/.353/.394 with nine homers, 44 RBI, and 47 runs scored in 442 plate appearances.

Pablo Lopez Sharp in Return From Injury

Minnesota Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez made his first start in over three months on Friday and held his own in a 2-1 defeat against the Kansas City Royals. Lopez (5-4) took a hard-luck loss, his fourth of the year, after tossing six innings of two-run, six-hit ball and logging four strikeouts against one walk on 92 pitches (58 strikes). It was the first start since June 3 for Lopez, who had been on the injured list with a teres major strain in his shoulder. After a successful return, the 29-year-old now owns a 2.84 ERA with a 1.08 WHIP, 65 strikeouts, and 15 walks over 66 2/3 innings this season. The Twins haven't announced a date for Lopez's next start yet.

Ryan Jeffers Exits Thursday's Contest With a Head Injury

Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers (head) left Thursday's contest after taking a foul ball off his head while catching. He will likely undergo testing for a concussion, with more news regarding his status coming on Friday. At this time, Jeffers is considered day-to-day, and fantasy managers will want to wait for news later in the day on his status for the upcoming three-game series they have starting Friday against the Kansas City Royals. With the Twins firmly out of contention to make the postseason in 2025, sitting at 62-78, it's unlikely the Twins will try to rush Jeffers back into the lineup. On the season, Jeffers is slashing a modest .262/.353/.394 with nine home runs, 44 RBI, and 47 runs scored. Mickey Gasper entered the game for Jeffers and will likely see more playing time should Jeffers miss any time.

Pablo Lopez Expected to Return on Friday

Minnesota Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez (shoulder) is expected to return to the mound on Friday for a start against the Kansas City Royals, according to Dan Hayes of The Athletic. Lopez suffered a teres major strain in his right shoulder and has not pitched in the big leagues since June 3. Before the injury, he was 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 61 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings (11 starts). Lopez worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his final rehab appearance with Triple-A St. Paul on August 31, so he could be close to full-go on Friday.

Byron Buxton Resting Against White Sox

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton is resting in Thursday's series finale against the division-rival Chicago White Sox at Target Field. Josh Outman will take over in center field and will bat eighth against White Sox left-handed opener Fraser Ellard. Buxton has been seeing the ball well at the plate, but he'll get a day off after starting each of the team's last seven games. The 31-year-old veteran has managed to mostly stay healthy in 2025 and has played in over 100 contests for just the third time in his 11 major-league-seasons while slashing .273/.333/.559 with a career-best 29 home runs, 72 RBI, 83 runs scored and 21 stolen bases in 456 plate appearances. Fantasy managers should get him back in their starting lineups for Friday's series opener on the road against the division-rival Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

David Festa  • SP  •  Twins

David Festa Shut Down for the Season

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher David Festa (shoulder) will be shut down for the rest of the 2025 season. Festa reported having returned discomfort in his shoulder following a rehab start on Thursday. The team has scheduled Festa to visit with a specialist over the next week. Regardless of that visit, Festa won't return to the mound in 2025. The team wants to make sure Festa doesn't require any surgeries that could impact his availability for the 2026 season. He'll finish this season with a 5.40 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a 53/19 K/BB ratio across 53.1 innings with the Twins. There should be another update on his status in the coming days.
