Kohl Stewart News
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kohl Stewart will make the start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. He will take the spot of Kyle Hendricks who is getting his start pushed back to Saturday. Stewart holds a 3.12 ERA and 7/3 K/BB ratio over 8 2/3 innings in two starts with Chicago. He won't be a reliable streaming option or DFS choice for Friday's slate. He can be avoided in most fantasy formats going forward.
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kohl Stewart picked up his first win of the season versus the San Diego Padres on Monday. Stewart was recalled from Triple-A Iowa with scheduled starter Trevor Williams (appendicitis) sidelined after undergoing an emergency appendectomy on Sunday morning. The former top pitching prospect performed well in his spot start and went five innings with three hits, one run (zero earned), one walk and struck out two on the afternoon. Depending on when Williams is expected back, Stewart could see another turn in the rotation. Stewart would be lined up to face a tough San Francisco Giants offense on Saturday and it would be wise to avoid him in that matchup. Stewart doesn't have long term value at the moment and should remain on the waiver wire.
The Chicago Cubs signed free-agent right-hander Kohl Stewart to a one-year, $700,000 deal on Thursday. Stewart will offer depth for Chicago's starting rotation but can also serve a multi-inning relief role if needed. He has pitched in parts of only two major league seasons and comes with five years of club control. The 26-year-old will be stretched out to handle multiple innings in spring training but could wind up as a long man out of the bullpen, which won't give him any fantasy appeal. The Cubs rotation, as things stand now, includes Kyle Hendricks, Zach Davies, Alec Mills and Adbert Alzolay. Chicago also has a handful of prospects that could contribute, and they continue to search for potential starters on the free-agent market. Stewart opted out of the 2020 season with Baltimore due to concerns over COVID-19 since he has Type 1 diabetes. He has a 4.79 ERA in 17 games (six starts) with 34 strikeouts and 26 walks in 62 big league innings since being the fourth overall pick in 2013 by the Twins.
