Rockies Place Kyle Freeland on 15-Day Injured List With Shoulder Inflammation

The Colorado Rockies announced on Wednesday that they placed left-hander Kyle Freeland (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 13) with left-shoulder inflammation. The team reinstated left-hander Jose Quintana (hamstring) from the 15-day IL in a corresponding move, and he will start Wednesday's game on the road against the Houston Astros. It's unclear if the 32-year-old Freeland will be ready to return from the IL when he's eligible near the end of this month. Freeland was pitching well in the early going in 2026, allowing only four earned runs with four walks and 13 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings pitched in his first three starts. He was scratched from his last scheduled start over the weekend on Sunday in San Diego due to shoulder tightness. If it's just inflammation bothering Freeland and nothing else, this shouldn't be an extended stay on the IL. For at least several turns through the starting rotation, the veteran Quintana will get another shot with the Rockies.

Kyle Freeland Scratched Due to Shoulder Soreness

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Freeland (shoulder) was scratched from his start on Sunday against the San Diego Padres. Right-handed reliever Jimmy Herget started the game in his absence, but fellow right-hander Valente Bellozo handled the bulk of the innings with five runs on eight hits (including two homers), four walks, and three strikeouts over 4.1 innings of work. Losing Freeland is brutal for the Rockies, as he had been one of their most dependable starters so far. Through three games, he owns a 2.30 ERA, 7.47 K/9, and 2.30 BB/9. Two of his three starts have come away from Coors Field, which could be part of the reason for his solid results, as well as his 0.57 HR/9 and 50% ground ball rate. He has also tapped into a little more velocity, averaging 92.2 mph on his fastball. That's the third-highest average fastball velocity of his career, as well as his highest mark since 2020. It remains to be seen whether Freeland will miss additional time due to his new shoulder issue. At the very least, it's a situation worth monitoring in the coming days.

Kyle Freeland to Start for Rockies on Opening Day

The Colorado Rockies announced on Tuesday that left-hander Kyle Freeland will make the start on Opening Day on March 27 against the Miami Marlins on the road. It will be Freeland's fifth career Opening Day start. The 32-year-old veteran southpaw had a league-high 17 losses in 2025 in his ninth big-league season, also posting a 4.98 ERA (4.18 FIP), 1.42 WHIP, and 124:38 K: BB in 162 2/3 innings over 31 starts for Colorado. It's hard to trust many Rockies starting pitchers at one of the most hitter-friendly home fields in baseball in Coors Field. But Freeland was actually worse away from home last year, and with a career ERA of 4.54 in 1,260 1/3 innings in the majors with the Rockies, only fantasy managers in NL-only leagues should be rostering Freeland in 2026. He's the No. 222-ranked starting pitcher for fantasy purposes at RotoBaller. His Opening Day matchup in Miami isn't a bad one, though, which will make him a cheap DFS sleeper for those willing to roll the dice.

Kyle Freeland to Make Spring Debut on Wednesday

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Freeland (back) is scheduled to make his spring debut in an exhibition game against Team USA on Wednesday. This will be the first appearance of the spring for Freeland, who has been slowed by a lingering back issue. He was able to throw a few bullpen sessions without any issues, so it appears the back injury is behind him. This isn't expected to be a long outing, but Freeland has time to build up his stamina ahead of Opening Day. The southpaw posted a 4.98 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and a 124/38 K/BB ratio across 31 starts with the Rockies last season. Freeland could offer some streaming appeal, but pitching is Coors Field is never a favorable situation for pitchers.

Kyle Freeland Nearing Spring Debut

Colorado Rockies left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland (back) completed a successful bullpen session this week and could make his spring training debut as early as this coming week. The southpaw has been dealing with a minor back injury, but appears to be progressing quite well. Managers should continue to monitor his status, but he does not appear to be in danger of missing the start of the regular season. Last summer, Freeland logged 163 2/3 innings with the Rockies and held a 4.98 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP. He struck out only 124 batters but had solid command of his pitches, allowing walks at a 5.4% rate. When healthy, Freeland figures to serve as the No.1 option in the Colorado rotation. Given his minimal strikeout upside and high ratios, Freeland only holds value as a low-end streamer in deeper 15-team leagues in favorable matchups.

Kyle Freeland to Start Saturday

Colorado Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland (finger) will start Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. There was some question as to whether Freeland would be able to pitch after leaving his previous start with a blister on Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He's good to go in Pittsburgh, which owns the majors' second-worst wOBA against lefties (.276). The Pirates should be a favorable matchup for Freeland, but regardless of opponent, it's hard to trust the struggling 32-year-old. He has gone 3-12 with a 5.16 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, and 85:31 K:BB in 120 1/3 innings this season.

Kyle Freeland Exits Monday's Start Early Due To Blister

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Freeland (finger) exited Monday's 4-3 win over the Dodgers with a blister on his pitching hand, per MLB's Manny Randhawa. Freeland made it through four innings, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts. He came out to warm up for the fifth inning but was ultimately relieved by Jaden Hill. Fantasy managers should look for more news in the coming days, but blisters have proven pesky for numerous pitchers over the last several seasons. Freeland has provided valuable innings for the Rockies this season but has offered limited fantasy production, going 3-12 with a 5.16 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, and a 6.36 K/9 in 23 starts and 120 1/3 innings. His next scheduled start would be a favorable matchup at the Pirates if he were able to take the mound.

Kyle Freeland Tosses Quality Start on Thursday

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Freeland bounced back on the mound during Thursday's outing against the Houston Astros. Freeland got off to a rough start by allowing three runs over the first two innings. After that, Freeland settled down and threw four scoreless innings. He finished this outing with three earned runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts over six innings of work. He exited the game with the lead, but sadly the bullpen blew it, so Freeland gets a no-decision here. He'll take a 5.49 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, and 61/20 K/BB ratio into this next start against the Boston Red Sox. Freeland won't be a recommended streaming option for that one.

Kyle Freeland Reinstated and Starting on Friday

The Colorado Rockies officially reinstated left-hander Kyle Freeland (back) from the 15-day injured list on Friday and optioned right-hander Anthony Molina to Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move. Freeland will make the start for Friday's series opener in Milwaukee against the Brewers. The 32-year-old veteran required a minimum stay on the IL and skipped a minor-league rehab assignment, so there's a good chance he will be on a strict pitch count in his first start back against a tough opponent on the road. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues should probably be looking to stay away from Freeland, who has gone 1-8 this year with a 5.13 ERA (3.63 FIP) and 1.53 WHIP with 57 K's and 15 walks in 73 2/3 innings over his 14 starts. In his first start against Milwaukee on April 8, Freeland allowed five earned runs on eight hits while striking out five in a loss in 6 1/3 innings.

Kyle Freeland Expected to Start on Friday

Colorado Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland (back) had a successful bullpen session on Tuesday and is expected to return from the 15-day injured list and make the start on Friday in Milwaukee against the Brewers. Freeland will be returning to Colorado's starting rotation for the first time since landing on the IL on June 15 with back stiffness. Although he shouldn't be limited from a workload perspective after a minimum IL stay, the 32-year-old veteran southpaw will be a pretty shaky fantasy starter in his return this weekend against a strong offense. In his third start of the year against the Brew Crew on April 8, Freeland allowed five earned runs on eight hits (one homer) while walking none and striking out five in 6 1/3 innings for a loss. The former first-rounder has struggled in 2025 to a 1-8 record, 5.13 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with only 57 K's in 73 2/3 innings over 14 starts.
