Lane Thomas Has Turned Everyday At-Bats Into Mixed-League Value

Kansas City Royals outfielder Lane Thomas is no longer just a platoon bat. Since Kyle Isbel (foot) landed on the injured list June 10, Thomas has hit .262/.331/.524 with seven home runs and 12 doubles across 126 plate appearances. He is playing against righties and lefties now, usually in a prominent lineup spot. The full-season line sits at .240 with nine homers, 34 RBI, 29 runs, and five steals over 250 at-bats. Only 11% of Yahoo leagues have Thomas rostered. That is still low for an everyday outfielder offering some power, a little speed, and enough on-base ability to keep the counting stats moving. Isbel began a rehab assignment Tuesday, so the outfield will get crowded again. Thomas has done too much with the opportunity to simply fall back into a strict platoon. He is a worthwhile mixed-league pickup while the role and production are both working.

Lane Thomas Emerging as a Balanced Contributor to Target on the Waiver Wire

Kansas City Royals outfielder Lane Thomas got off to a very slow start to the 2026 season, hitting .208 with one home run across his first 125 plate appearances. However, the 30-year-old has begun to turn it on in the summer months, hitting .254 with six home runs across 144 plate appearances since the calendar flipped to June. Thomas owns a strong 12.4% walk rate for the season, which gives him a safe on-base floor and helps keep his bat in the lineup. With Royals outfielder Kyle Isbel (foot) currently on the injured list due to plantar fasciitis, Thomas has emerged as the everyday center fielder in Kansas City. As long as he continues to see regular playing time, Thomas profiles as a useful compiler with some power/speed upside for fantasy managers to target on the waiver wire.

Lane Thomas Says he's Fully Healthy

Kansas City Royals outfielder Lane Thomas (foot) said on Thursday that he's fully healthy this spring after he had surgery to fix plantar fasciitis in his right foot last September, according to Sports Radio 810. Thomas was a total bust for the Cleveland Guardians last year due to injuries. He was limited to only 39 regular-season games and hit .160/.246/.272 with a .518 OPS, four home runs, 11 RBI, 10 runs scored, and four stolen bases in 142 plate appearances in his seventh year in the majors. Despite the lost season, the 30-year-old veteran could see most of the playing time in left field for the Royals in 2026 after signing a one-year, $5.25 million deal in December. The previous two seasons with the Washington Nationals and Guardians, Thomas hit .255/.312/.439 with a .751 OPS, 43 homers, 149 RBI, and 52 steals in 286 games, so there is bounce-back potential if he's fully healthy. At the very least, he could be a sneaky waiver-wire pickup for his speed.

Lane Thomas Agrees to One-Year Deal With Royals

Free-agent outfielder Lane Thomas has agreed to a one-year, $5.25 million deal with the Kansas City Royals, with an additional $1 million available through incentives, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic. Thomas battled injuries last season and struggled at the plate, slashing .166/.245/.290 with five home runs and five stolen bases over 177 plate appearances with the Cleveland Guardians. The 30-year-old has yet to recapture his 2023 breakout form, when he hit 28 home runs, stole 20 bases, and posted a .268/.315/.468 slash line with a 109 wRC+. For the Royals, Thomas is expected to open the season as the starting left fielder and will likely slot into the lower part of the batting order. Fantasy managers can safely take a wait-and-see approach for now, but he's a name to monitor early in the season in case he rediscovers his previous level of production.

Lane Thomas to Miss 3-4 Months of Action After Foot Surgery

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas (foot) underwent successful surgery on Tuesday. Thomas needed to have surgery to address the plantar fasciitis issue that has bothered him throughout most of the season. He's expected to miss roughly 3-4 months of action following the surgery. That being said, Thomas won't be available if the Guardians make the playoffs, but he should be ready to go in time for spring training. It was basically a lost season for Thomas who only managed to play in 39 games.

Lane Thomas Goes Hitless in First Rehab Start

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas (foot) went 0-for-3 on Tuesday in Double-A Akron with the RubberDucks in his first rehab game back since injuring his foot and being placed on the injured list on July 6. Thomas was diagnosed with right foot plantar fasciitis and has missed a good portion of the season, so, understandably, he got off to a slow start. He started at designated hitter on Tuesday, and he will likely start in the outfield on Wednesday. At this time, the Guardians are four games back in the AL Wild Card Race, so they hope to get Thomas back on the team to try and help with their playoff push. Although the 30-year-old has struggled at the plate this season, slashing .160/.246/.272 in 125 at-bats, he owns a career .242/.309/.418 slash line in seven MLB seasons. He also brings a good arm and speed to the outfield.

Lane Thomas Takes On-Field Batting Practice

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas (foot) took on-field batting practice on Monday, and the team is hopeful that he can return at some point in September, according to manager Stephen Vogt. However, there is still no timetable for Thomas to return from plantar fasciitis in his right foot that landed him on the injured list on July 6. Even in deeper fantasy leagues, there's just not much incentive to keep Thomas stashed at this point. The 30-year-old veteran has been injured for most of the year in his first season with Cleveland. He has played in only 39 games to this point and hasn't been good when he's been healthy, either, going 20-for-125 (.160) with four home runs, 11 RBI, 10 runs and four stolen bases. With Thomas still away from the team, the Guards will continue to trot Angel Martinez out as their primary center fielder.

Lane Thomas "Progressing Really Well"

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas (foot) is "feeling a lot better" and "progressing really well" as he works back from plantar fasciitis in his right foot, manager Stephen Vogt said. Thomas has been running and participating in some baseball activities as he moves toward a potential September return. The 29-year-old has gone through a slow recovery process since he landed on the 10-day IL on July 5, continuing a frustrating season for him. Thomas has been on the IL three times (twice for foot issues, once for a wrist injury) and has seen his production crater when he has taken the field. After combining for a .250/.309/.428 line with 60 homers and 60 stolen bases from 2022-24, Thomas has hit a meek .160/.246/.272 line with four HRs, 11 RBI, 10 runs scored, and four steals across 142 plate appearances in 2025.

Lane Thomas has Complicated Foot Issues

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas (foot) has met with a doctor to discuss the next steps needed as he recovers from a foot injury. He has what is considered a "complicated case" of plantar fasciitis, seemingly keeping him out of action for the next while. While he has undergone treatment to help alleviate the problems, his foot has not responded well. Thomas will be out of action for an indefinite period. The 29-year-old outfielder missed action because of plantar fasciitis in May, and then reinjured himself with the same ailment at the beginning of July. Thomas has struggled mightily this season, hitting just four home runs while racking up four stolen bases in just 39 games. It is unclear if and when he will return this season.

Lane Thomas Progressing Slower Than Expected with Foot Injury

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas (foot) is progressing "a little slower" than the team expected, according to Guardians manager Stephen Vogt. Thomas was placed on the 10-day injured list in early July due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He recently received a pain-killing injection over the All-Star break. Thomas has had a rough season in 2025, slashing .160/.246/.272 with four home runs and four stolen bases in 142 plate appearances. The 29-year-old has posted the lowest barrel rate (4.8%) and hard-hit rate (30.1%) of his career so far this year. Thomas' speed (32 stolen bases in 2024) is a big part of his value to fantasy managers, so a nagging foot injury is bad news for his outlook the rest of the way.
