The Seattle Mariners signed free-agent veteran outfielder Leonys Martin to a minor-league deal on Thursday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Martin has been playing in Japan for the Chiba Lotte Marines since the middle of 2019. He made his major-league debut with the Texas Rangers back in 2011 and played briefly for Seattle in 2016 and for part of the 2017 season. Overseas, the 34-year-old slashed just .220/.350/.461 over three-plus years. The left-handed-hitting Martin played nine years in the big leagues before heading to Japan and hit .244/.301/.367 with a .668 OPS, 58 home runs, 228 RBI and 126 stolen bases in 770 games played. He'll be a long shot to find regular playing time if he's with the big-league club in 2023.
Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin was designated for assignment on Saturday and will now either be traded or cut by the team in the next week. The move isn't much of a surprise as the 31-year-old has slashed just .199/.276/.343 on the year. Pitcher Aaron Civale was called up to replace Martin on the roster for now. The more intriguing aspect of this move, however, could be the opening up of a roster spot for slugging outfielder Bobby Bradley, who has hit 24 home runs in Triple-A this year. If Bradley gets the call, he is worth a speculative add in AL-only leagues and 16+ team leagues.
Leonys Martin Out Wednesday, Oscar Mercado To Get Start
Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin will get the day off Wednesday against Minnesota Twins left-hander Martin Perez. In his place in center field will be rookie outfielder Oscar Mercado. Mercado has had a decent start to his big league career but needs to lower his strikeout rate and have more patience at the plate if he wants an extended stay in the big leagues. Left-handed pitchers have baffled Mercado, who has a .174/.269/.217 line through 23 at-bats against them, and while the sample size is small, it might be wise to leave him on your bench until he starts to figure things out.
Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Thursday's game against the Chicago White Sox. The speedy veteran outfielder will get the day off against the left-handed pitcher. Oscar Mercado will play center field and bat second versus lefty Manny Banuelos. Mercado is a decent cheap DFS option for Thursday's contest.
Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis and outfielder Leonys Martin are out of the starting lineup against Red Sox left-handed starter David Price on Tuesday. Mike Freeman is starting at second and is hitting ninth, while Oscar Mercado is in center field and batting second. Greg Allen draws into left field and will hit eighth. Mercado is the only attractive daily option on Tuesday evening. The 24-year-old rookie is hitting a nice .323/.417/.516 with a homer, nine runs, four RBI and two steals in his first 31 at-bats in the big leagues. He's mainly useful for his speed in deep mixed and AL-only leagues.
Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin is not in the starting lineup against White Sox left-handed starting pitcher Manny Banuelos on Thursday. Jordan Luplow draws into the lineup and is playing center field and batting fifth. Luplow has seven hits in his 30 at-bats (.233) this season for the Tribe with no home runs, three runs scored and one stolen base. Even in a decent lineup spot, Luplow isn't very attractive for DFS purposes in a Cleveland lineup that has struggled mightily.
Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said that outfielder Leonys Martin (hamstring) was feeling good on Monday and will be back in the lineup on Tuesday. Martin has missed the last two games with a tight hamstring, but the injury isn't very serious. The left-handed hitter is batting just .209/.300/.383 with five home runs and eight RBI this year in an Indians offense that hasn't hit its stride yet in 2019. Hopefully the small break can spark Martin to heat up at the plate. He's worth benching in mixed leagues until he picks things up.
Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin (hamstring) is out of the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Martin experienced hamstring tightness during Saturday's game, so he'll get the day off to rest. He's considered day-to-day, so hopefully he won't land on the injured list. Jordan Luplow will cover center field and bat seventh versus righty Erik Swanson. Luplow doesn't not have any fantasy value at the moment.
Leonys Martin Has Another Three-Hit Game on Tuesday
Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin put together another three-hit game on Tuesday, finishing 3-for-5 with an RBI. Martin has two three-hit games in his last three games, picking his batting line up to .276/.391/.500. Hitting at the top of the lineup, Martin should be a solid multiple-category contributor throughout the season as long as he stays healthy.
Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin had a strong game on Thursday, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a walk, and a single. He scored two runs and drove in two as well. Martin has struggled a bit this season, but seems to have turned it on recently. He's hitting .237 with an .844 OPS out of the top spot in the Cleveland lineup.
