Lucas Gilbreath News
Colorado Rockies left-hander Lucas Gilbreath (elbow, shoulder) progressed on his minor-league rehab assignment from High-A Spokane to Triple-A Albuquerque at the end of July. Gilbreath has pitched two games for the Isotopes, throwing 2 2/3 innings and giving up no runs while walking two and striking out three. "Gilbreath is going to throw [Aug. 7] and [Aug. 9]," manager Bud Black said. "He's doing fine." The 28-year-old southpaw had Tommy John surgery in March of 2023 and also had a setback with his left shoulder, but he's doing fine now and should be an option for Colorado's bullpen to close out the 2024 season. Gilbreath hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2022 and has one save, a 3.78 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 94 appearances (one start) over 85 2/3 innings since debuting in 2021.

Lucas Gilbreath Back On Track
Colorado Rockies left-hander Lucas Gilbreath (elbow, shoulder) has recovered from a shoulder issue that slowed his return from Tommy John surgery. Gilbreath threw a third side session on Saturday and appears to be back on track after initial pre-shoulder projections that he could be ready by May. "[His side] went great, he threw all his pitches," manager Bud Black said. "He's headed to Arizona [July 7]. He's going to start to face hitters. He'll be in some games within a week in Arizona, and then probably we'll jump him up a level. He's getting closer. He was really close, and then the shoulder strain, but the elbow hasn't been an issue. We just got to get him conditioned for games." The 28-year-old southpaw had Tommy John surgery in March of 2023 and probably isn't going to make his 2024 debut until some point in August, barring another setback.

Lucas Gilbreath Shut Down With Shoulder Injury
Colorado Rockies left-hander Lucas Gilbreath (elbow, shoulder), who has been rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, was pitching in the first game of his minor-league rehab assignment on April 23, when he felt discomfort at the back of his shoulder and was shut down and moved to the 60-day injured list. Gilbreath pinpointed the injury to his "teres major, in the armpit, almost -- not the labrum, and the rotator cuff in general is in really good shape." He's currently in a rest period for an injury that isn't considered major, but it's nevertheless a setback as he tries to return from Tommy John surgery. It's a tough development for the 28-year-old southpaw, but he still could return to Colorado's bullpen this year. Gilbreath didn't pitch at all in 2023 and won't be an option in fantasy once he does return.

Lucas Gilbreath To Have Tommy John Surgery
Colorado Rockies left-hander Lucas Gilbreath (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery next week, which will knock him out for the entire 2023 season. Depending on how his recovery goes, he could also miss the start of the 2024 campaign. The 27-year-old southpaw reliever appeared in 47 games out of the bullpen for Colorado in his second season with the team in 2022 and posted a 4.19 ERA (3.53 FIP), 1.46 WHIP, 26 walks and 49 strikeouts in 43 innings pitched. He had a 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, one save and 44 strikeouts in 47 outings (one start) over 42 2/3 innings in his rookie season with the Rockies in 2021. Gilbreath can obviously be avoided in all fantasy drafts.

Lucas Gilbreath May Need Tommy John Surgery
Colorado Rockies southpaw Lucas Gilbreath (elbow) may need Tommy John surgery after undergoing an MRI exam. Gilbreath's 2022 campaign finished with a platelet-rich plasma injection in his elbow, and it appears that surgery could be the next step. In a recent report, the 26-year-old said, "We're still looking into different options," but all signs are pointing towards Tommy John surgery. Gilbreath posted a 4.19 ERA (3.53 FIP) with 49 strikeouts across 43 innings. He composed a 26.2% strikeout rate along with a 13.9% walk rate. The southpaw is entering his third pro season, which is already in jeopardy. There could be other options out there, but whichever path Gilbreath chooses will likely hinder his 2023 season.

Lucas Gilbreath Allows A Run As Opener
Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Lucas Gilbreath took a no-decision on Wednesday when he allowed one run on two hits with two walks over one inning in an 8-7 loss to the Angels. Gilbreath served as the opener on Wednesday and was making his first start of the season. Things did not go well as he coughed up two hits and walked two batters while allowing Jose Iglesias to knock in a run. Four of the five relievers that the Rockies used ended up giving up runs so the bullpen strategy did not end up working out. Gilbreath will return to the pen and carry an ugly 6.41 ERA, 1.68 WHIP, and 19:13 K/BB ratio with him.
