Anthony Alford, Luis Oviedo Rehabbing In Minors

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Anthony Alford (wrist) was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment on April 16 with Single-A Bradenton, and medical director Todd Tomczyk said on April 13 that Alford had resumed all baseball hitting activities with minimal to no symptoms. Relief pitcher Luis Oviedo (ankle), meanwhile, will move from Bradenton to Double-A Altoona to continue his rehab assignment. Oviedo didn't give up a run over 2 1/3 innings at Bradenton, but he did walk three batters and hit another. Alford began the year on the injured list, but he could join the Pirates this week as a platoon outfielder. Oviedo sprained his right ankle in spring training, but he, too, could rejoin Pittsburgh sometime this week.

Luis Oviedo Will Start For Pirates Tuesday Night

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Luis Oviedo will get the start in the series opener with the Brewers on Tuesday night. Oviedo is being called upon to make this start after Pittsburgh traded away starting pitcher Tyler Anderson to the Phillies earlier in the day on Tuesday. He had only recently been activated from the injured list, after missing time due to a quad strain. Prior to the injury, he had struggled working out of the bullpen earlier this year, going 1-1 with a 7.23 ERA, 1.768 WHIP and 21.8 percent strikeout rate over 18 2/3 innings of work. There's not really much upside for Oviedo in this matchup, so managers can ignore him in the majority of formats.
