Masahiro Tanaka Allows Two Runs Over Two Innings

New York Yankees starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka made his 2020 spring training debut on Wednesday, allowing two runs on two hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Tanaka comes into 2020 after having posted his worst career strikeout rate (19.6%) last season, and his swinging-strike rate (10.7%) dipped to its lowest level since 2016. Tanaka tweaked his pitch mix last season to feature more sliders and four-seam fastballs at the expense of his splitter, but the results were less than ideal, even as the slider generated an arsenal-best 16.68% swinging-strike rate. Its encouraging to see Tanaka get two strikeouts over two innings early, but its too early to read into anything for now.

Masahiro Tanaka Working On Cutter

New York Yankees starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka is reportedly working with former Yankee Andy Pettitte on his cutter. Tanaka effectively ditched the pitch last season, throwing it just 1.56% of the time. Over the past three years, Tanakas cutter has allowed a poor .424 xwOBA, the worst of any pitch in the 31-year-olds arsenal. Adding another effective pitch would be beneficial for Tanaka, who owns a disappointing 4.34 ERA and 4.22 FIP for the last three years. Fantasy owners should monitor Tanakas pitch mix and be encouraged if his cutter becomes a weapon.

Masahiro Tanaka Has Bone Chips Removed From Elbow

New York Yankees starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove bone spurs from his right elbow, according to general manager Brian Cashman. It's a notable procedure, but Tanaka should have enough time to heal up before spring training of 2020. The Japanese right-hander went 11-9 with a 4.45 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 149 strikeouts in 182 innings (31 starts) for the Bombers in 2019. He was up and down most of the year and allowed the second most home runs (28) in his career. Keep an eye on how Tanaka heals in the offseason, but he should be a reliable innings-eater for fantasy owners again next season.
