Matt Carpenter News
According to a tweet from MLB.com's AJ Cassavell on Tuesday, the San Diego Padres have reportedly agreed to a deal with free-agent infielder Matt Carpenter. The deal guarantees him $12 million, with $6 million coming in 2023 and a $6 million player option in 2024. Carpenter will play something of a utility role in San Diego -- some first base, left field, right field, designated hitter and potentially as a backup at second and third base. Carpenter enjoyed a productive stint with the New York Yankees in 2022, hitting .305 with a .412 on-base percentage and 15 home runs in 154 plate appearances before breaking his foot. He saw most of his playing time for the American League East club at designated hitter and in right field while also logging innings at first base, third base and in left field.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal speculates that free-agent corner infielder/designated hitter Matt Carpenter's deep and enduring connections to the St. Louis Cardinals seem to make a potential reunion feasible this offseason. Carpenter was a roommate in rookie ball with current manager Oliver Marmol, and he worked out last offseason with both Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado to retool his swing. He also had hitting sessions with former teammate and new bench coach Matt Holliday. The retirement of Albert Pujols could create an opening for Carpenter, who turns 37 later this month. Carpenter hit a strong .305/.412/.727 with a 1.138 OPS, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 28 runs scored for the Yankees in 2022 but also missed extended time with a fractured foot.
New York Yankees infielder Matt Carpenter (foot) is on the team's roster for the American League Division Series this week against the Cleveland Guardians. Carpenter hasn't played for the Yankees since fracturing his left foot on Aug. 8, but he'll give the team a strong left-handed power bat for their first postseason series. It's unlikely that he'll be in the starting lineup for the Bronx Bombers given all the time he's missed, but it's a notable addition to their bench. Before his injury, the 36-year-old veteran was having an outstanding bounce-back campaign in New York with a .305/.412/.727 slash line, a 1.138 OPS, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 28 runs scored in 128 at-bats.
