Matt Wallner Goes on Injured List With Oblique Strain

The Minnesota Twins announced on Friday that they placed outfielder Matt Wallner (oblique) on the 10-day injured list with a right-oblique strain and recalled outfielder DaShawn Keirsey Jr. from Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move. With the Twins out of postseason contention, that will be it for Wallner for the rest of the 2025 season. The 27-year-old former first-rounder played in a career-high 104 games this year in his fourth year in the big leagues and had a disappointing .202 average (68-for-336) in 392 trips to the plate. However, the left-handed hitter did club 22 home runs and added 40 RBI, 47 runs scored, and four stolen bases. With Wallner out for the last week-plus of the season, James Outman figures to see more playing time in Minnesota's outfield. Outman is in right field and is batting ninth on Friday against the Cleveland Guardians and left-hander Parker Messick.

Matt Wallner Dealing with Back Spasms

Minnesota Twins outfielder Matt Wallner (back) left Wednesday night's game against the Yankees in the fifth inning after going 0-for-1 with a walk. Wallner is considered day-to-day, but since the Twins have a day off Thursday, he could return to action Friday without missing a start. The 27-year-old lefty is hitting only .202 on the season, but does have a new career-high 22 homers in his 104 games. He has a .262 ISO and .334 wOBA and is a solid source of lefty power in the Minnesota outfield despite his low average. He has been part of a crowded rotation in the outfield, so he could get fewer games over the last couple of series if his back continues to be an issue.

Matt Wallner Reinstated From Paternity List

The Minnesota Twins have activated outfielder Matt Wallner (personal) from the paternity list and optioned catcher Jhonny Pereda to Triple-A St. Paul. Wallner will return after missing three games to provide some punch to the Twins' lineup. The 27-year-old has smacked a career-high 16 homers while hitting .218/.325/.496 with 27 RBI and 34 runs scored in 274 trips to the plate. Wallner's .278 ISO ranks ninth in the majors among hitters who have amassed at least 250 plate appearances. The lefty has done most of his against righties, though, and he'll face a tough test on Tuesday against New York Yankees southpaw Carlos Rodon.

Matt Wallner Expected to Return on Tuesday

Minnesota Twins outfielder Matt Wallner (personal) is expected to rejoin the team in the Bronx on Tuesday for their game against the New York Yankees after being away since Saturday for the birth of his child. Wallner should be a lineup regular for the Twins after they traded away plenty of players at the July 31 deadline. The 27-year-old is hitting a career-low .218 (51-for-234) with 77 strikeouts and 34 walks, but he's also recorded a career-high 16 home runs, 27 RBI and 34 runs scored in 74 games. Wallner's .233 expected batting average means he could still have a little run in him this year, but he's also in just the eighth percentile in strikeout rate. Fantasy managers are simply chasing the former first-rounder's power from the left side in the middle of Minnesota's lineup.

Matt Wallner Homers in Win

Minnesota Twins outfielder Matt Wallner has struggled throughout most of the season, but came up with a big hit on Thursday. Wallner was quiet until crushing a two-run home run off right-hander Zach Pop in the seventh inning. He ended his night 1-for-4 with one home run, two RBI, and a walk in the blowout win. Wallner has decent potential, but hasn't been productive this season and isn't worth rostering in most fantasy formats right now.

Matt Wallner Out Against a Lefty on Tuesday

Minnesota Twins outfielder Matt Wallner is out of the starting lineup on Tuesday for the series opener against the Cincinnati Reds with a left-hander on the mound. Utility man Willi Castro is making the start in right field at Great American Ballpark and will bat third against Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott. Wallner hasn't been good overall this year, but he's been much worse against lefties, going 3-for-20 in limited at-bats against them with one of his five home runs and eight strikeouts in 23 plate appearances. Wallner has gone hitless in his last three games with four strikeouts and has gone 6-for-41 (.146) with three homers, three RBI, four walks and 13 strikeouts in 12 games this month. Castro, a switch-hitter, has made much more contact in 2025, hitting .290/.365/.483 with an .848 OPS in 176 at-bats. He's hit .327 (18-for-55) with three of his seven homers against southpaws, making him a DFS sleeper target.

Matt Wallner Activated from Injured List

The Minnesota Twins have activated outfielder Matt Wallner (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list prior to their contest against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday evening. Wallner hit the injured list on April 17 due to a strained left hamstring. Before his injury, Wallner held a solid .263/.373/.474 slash line with five doubles, two triples, one home run, and a 19:9 K:BB. Under the hood, he generated an above-average .351 xwOBA with an elite 76.5 mph average bat speed. Through his six rehab outings with Triple-A St. Paul, the 27-year-old flashed high upside power as he launched five home runs with a .320/.370/.960 line. In 2024, Wallner enjoyed a strong finish to the campaign, holding a .272/.376/.538 line during the second half of the campaign. Fantasy managers should expect Wallner to have close to an everyday role in the starting nine going forward.

Matt Wallner to Return on Saturday

The Athletic's Dan Hayes reports that Minnesota Twins outfielder Matt Wallner (hamstring) will likely come off the 10-day injured list and rejoin the team on Saturday. Wallner went 8-for-25 with five home runs in six minor-league rehab games and is now ready to rejoin the big-league roster after suffering a hamstring strain in mid-April. The 27-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder should see plenty of playing time against right-handed pitching upon his return after hitting .263 (15-for-57) with a home run, three RBI and seven runs scored before going on the IL. The former first-rounder in 2019 out of Southern Mississippi has plenty of power upside after combining for 27 long balls and 78 RBI in 151 games in 2023 and 2024 with the Twins. Wallner has struggled against lefties, but there's 30-homer upside in his lumber if he can stay healthy.

Matt Wallner Starting Rehab Assignment on Wednesday

Minnesota Twins outfielder Matt Wallner (hamstring) is starting his minor-league rehab assignment on Wednesday night and will serve as the designated hitter for the Triple-A St. Paul Saints, according to The Athletic's Dan Hayes. Wallner could be approaching his return to the big leagues after landing on the 10-day injured list on April 17 with a Grade 3 left-hamstring strain. However, given his long layoff, the 27-year-old outfielder will likely need a lengthy rehab assignment, so there's no guarantee he'll be back with the Twins before the end of May. The former 39th overall pick in 2019 out of Southern Mississippi had gone 15-for-57 (.263) with a home run, three RBI and seven runs scored in 18 games in April before suffering his hamstring injury. When fully healthy and back on the active MLB roster, Wallner should see regular playing time at outfield and DH against righties.

Matt Wallner Could Miss Most Of May

Minnesota Twins outfielder Matt Wallner (hamstring) could miss most of May due to his left hamstring strain. Team president Derek Falvey noted that the severity of his injury could keep him sidelined for the upcoming month. Wallner exited their contest on April 15 with this injury and was then placed on the 10-day injured list. Before his injury, Wallner was enjoying a solid start to the campaign, holding a .263/.373/.474 slash line with five doubles, two triples, and one home run. Under the hood, the 27-year-old has generated a .351 xwOBA with an elite 76.5 mph bat speed, which are both above the average marks. In addition, Wallner has also drawn walks at an impressive 13.4 percent rate. While he remains sidelined, Trevor Larnach and DeShawn Keirsey should see time in right field.
