Kansas City Royals pitcher Miguel Almonte was traded to the Los Angeles Angels after he was demoted. Almonte was initially demoted to make room for newly-acquired journeyman outfielder Abraham Almonte, and he was reportedly traded due to concerns about his health. Almonte's shoulder has reminded the Royals of the ongoing struggle they've had with one-time prospect Kyle Zimmer, so management apparently decided to move on from him quickly, per Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star. The Royals will receive cash in return.
The Kansas City Royals recalled right-handed pitcher Miguel Almonte on Saturday in a corresponding move to the placement of Matt Strahm on the disabled list. Almonte has been impressive across Double-A and Triple-A this season as he's carried a 1.42 ERA through seven starts (six at Double-A) and four relief appearances. He's also racked up 47 strikeouts in 38 innings, 12 of which have come in nine Triple-A innings. He's recently been used in a short relief role, but he's shown the ability to switch between starting and relief roles, so he may see a spot start this week. However, with Danny Duffy slated to return either next Sunday or immediately after the All Star Break, expect Almonte's role to be short-lived.
