Mike Pelfrey Announces Retirement

Free-agent starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey announced his retirement on Wednesday. The former first-round pick of the Mets, Pelfrey spent 2017 with the White Sox and was 3-12 with a 5.93 ERA. Pelfrey spent the first seven years of his big league career with the Mets, followed by three seasons with the Twins, before finishing up with the Tigers and White Sox. The 34-year-old will enter the coaching ranks at Newman University, located in Wichita, Kansas.

Reynaldo Lopez Will Start Friday, Mike Pelfrey Sent To Bullpen

The Chicago White Sox will be calling up Reynaldo Lopez to make his first start of 2017 this Friday. Lopez is scheduled to take on the Kansas City Royals at home. The right-hander was acquired by the White Sox in the offseason trade which sent outfielder Adam Eaton to the Washington Nationals. Lopez is regarded as the No. 6 prospect in the Chicago farm system and is the 59th ranked prospect overall in MLB. He has made 22 starts in Triple-A this season, posting a 6-7 record, 3.79 ERA, and 131 strikeouts in 121 innings of work. The White Sox have moved Mike Pelfrey to the bullpen to make room for Lopez in the big league rotation. Pelfrey has a 5.31 ERA in 21 appearances for the Sox this season.
