Mariners Acquire Miles Mastrobuoni From Cubs

The Seattle Mariners acquired infielder Miles Mastrobuoni from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations, the Cubs announced. The move comes after the Cubs designated Mastrobuoni for assignment last week. The 29-year-old infielder will now head to the American League West and will provide the M's with infield depth heading into the 2025 season. Mastrobuoni, a former 14th-round selection by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016 out of the University of Nevada, Reno, debuted in the big leagues in 2022 with Tampa but played in only eight games. He hit .221/.282/.268 with a homer, nine RBI, 15 steals and 33 runs scored in 110 games for the Cubbies the last two years as a reserve. He's a serviceable utility infielder but has very little offensive upside, and with minor-league options remaining, there's a good chance he'll open the year at Triple-A Tacoma.

Cubs Acquire Matt Festa, Designate Miles Mastrobuoni For Assignment

According to Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports, the Chicago Cubs have acquired right-handed pitcher Matt Festa from the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations. In a corresponding move, the Cubs designated infielder Miles Mastrobuoni for assignment. Festa was initially designated for assignment by Texas earlier this week but will now look to compete for a spot on the Cubs Opening Day Roster. Last season, Festa posted a 5.70 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP across 23 2/3 innings of relief in the majors. Mastrobuoni was deployed as a depth option in the Chicago infield last season and held a .191/.245/.224 line across 50 games. If Festa were to earn a spot on the roster, he would likely see time as a low-leverage relief option.

Matt Mervis Sent Down, Miles Mastrobuoni Promoted

Chicago Cubs infielder Miles Mastrobuoni was called up from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday in a corresponding move that sent Cubs first base prospect Matt Mervis back down to the minor leagues. Mervis disappointed fantasy managers in his second major league stint and will most likely not receive another chance until later in the summer. Mervis posted a .115/.148/.154 line in nine games with the Cubs this season, which is not too different from his .167/.242/.289 line he had across 27 games last year. Mastrobuoni played in 61 games last season with the Cubs and put up a modest .241/.308/.301 stat line. The 28-year-old should be expected to reclaim his utility role once again this season after starting games at second base, third base, and in the outfield last season. He is nothing more than a desperation play in DFS when he is in the Cubs lineup.

Cubs Acquire Miles Mastrobuoni From The Rays

The Chicago Cubs acquired second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni from the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday in exchange for a Single-A pitcher, according to sources. Mastrobuoni can play both the infield and outfield. The 27-year-old made his major-league debut with the Rays this year and went 3-for-16 with a stolen base, a run scored and six strikeouts in his first eight big-league games. Down on the farm in 129 games for Triple-A Durham, the left-handed hitter batted a strong .300/.377/.469 with an .846 OPS, a career-high 16 home runs, 64 RBI, 92 runs scored and 23 stolen bases in 573 plate appearances for the Bulls. Mastrobuoni will likely compete for a utility role with Chicago in spring training next season.
