Nick Anderson News
The Atlanta Braves and right-handed reliever Nick Anderson agreed to a major-league contract on Friday, according to sources. The 32-year-old will play on a split deal that will pay $875,000 if he's in the big leagues and $180,000 if he's in the minors in 2023. Anderson cleared outright waivers with the Tampa Bay Rays to become a free agent on Thursday, and he quickly latched on with the Braves. He's made just six major-league appearances in the last two years due to injuries, but he's proven that he can be a high-leverage bullpen arm when healthy. Anderson has a career 2.89 ERA (2.57 FIP), a 0.96 WHIP, eight saves and 137 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings over three MLB seasons to this point.
The Tampa Bay Rays outrighted right-handed relief pitcher Nick Anderson on Wednesday, according to sources. Anderson is now on waivers and the other 29 teams can now add him to their major-league roster. If he clears waivers, he will remain in Tampa's minor-league system. Injuries have derailed Anderson's career since 2020. He pitched in just six innings for the Rays in 2021 and wasn't seen at all this year. The 32-year-old veteran relief arm will be intriguing to a team looking for bullpen help. In the shortened 2020 season, he had a 0.55 ERA (1.35 FIP), a 0.49 WHIP, six saves and 26 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings pitched, so if he can get healthy again, he could return to a high-leverage role at the back of a bullpen.
Tampa Bay Rays reliever Nick Anderson (elbow) is having his rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A Durham. According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Anderson will pitch for the Durham Bulls on Saturday. The 32-year-old is working his way back from right elbow surgery, which he underwent last October. He began his rehab stint at the Florida Complex League about a week ago. He made two appearances there and allowed two hits, one walk and one unearned run while striking out two over 1.1 innings.

After a fantastic rookie season that included being shipped across the state from Miami to Tampa, Nick Anderson was ALL the hype for 2020 relief pitchers. He certainly followed it up with an impressive encore, with two wins, six saves, 0.55 ERA, 0.49 WHIP, and 26 K in just 16.1 IP across the shortened 2020 season while finishing as the RP6 in fantasy. Those stellar numbers came in as top six in ERA, top three in FIP, and the league-best WHIP among all relievers.Anderson relied on his fastball more in the shortened season, and it appeared to set up his slider perfectly as he also led all relievers in O-Swing% and registered a filthy 21.5 SwStr%. Despite the dominant stuff, fantasy owners should be aware that Anderson struggled mightily in the postseason, surrendering nine ER in 14.2 IP, while Diego Castillo came up clutch for Kevin Cash and earned three saves. Despite the possible lack of save opportunities compared to other top-10 fantasy relievers, Anderson's current ADP of 146 still offers potential value for the ratios and high strikeout-upside. But if your draft build is aiming for saves specifically, it might be best to look elsewhere.
