Nomar Mazara Signs Minor-League Deal With O's

The Baltimore Orioles agreed to a minor-league deal with free-agent outfielder Nomar Mazara on Tuesday. The San Diego Padres designated Mazara for assignment in late August and he cleared waivers. The 27-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder actually had a decent season for the Friars, slashing .264/.316/.352 with two home runs, 18 RBI and 16 runs scored in 171 plate appearances and 55 games before the Padres swung the blockbuster trade with the Washington Nationals to acquire right fielder Juan Soto. Mazara will be hoping to win a roster spot out of spring training with the Orioles heading into the 2023 season.

Nomar Mazara Adds Three Hits Tuesday

San Diego Padres outfielder Nomar Mazara added three hits in four at-bats Tuesday with a double and a run scored. Mazara was called up to the majors on June 2 and has become a regular contributor, slashing .301/.356/.434 while starting nearly every game in right field. His two homers, 10 runs scored, 13 RBI, and zero steals aren't much to speak of, but fantasy managers could do worse than to roster the fifth hitter in what should be a consistently excellent Padres lineup, especially for free off the waiver wire.

Nomar Mazara To Be Called Up By Padres

The San Diego Padres will be calling up outfielder Nomar Mazara from Triple-A, according to Robert Murray of MLB Insider. The 27-year-old has been swinging a hot bat at Triple-A this year. Over 35 games, he's slashed .367/.454/.641 with seven home runs, 27 RBI and 32 runs. Mazara was a highly-touted prospect coming up through the Texas Rangers' organization several years back. He struggled to find consistency during his time in the majors with the Rangers and has been bouncing around the league since parting ways with the organization in 2019. He figures to be a reserve outfielder for the Padres once he joins the team.

Nomar Mazara Reassigned To Minors

San Diego Padres outfielder Nomar Mazara has been reassigned to Triple-A El Paso. The former top prospect had a chance at making the Opening Day roster. However, a poor performance in spring training has resulted in a trip to the minors. The sixth-year veteran once put together three straight seasons of 20 home runs with the Texas Rangers. Sadly, he has played less than 100 games total over the last two seasons. His departure to the minors increases the likelihood that CJ Abrams makes the Opening Day roster. Hopefully, Mazara should rejoin the big league team at some point, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect much out of him.

Nomar Mazara Lands With Padres

The San Diego Padres signed outfielder Nomar Mazara to a minor league deal that includes an invite to big-league spring training. Mazara was eligible to sign a minor league during MLB's lockout because he didn't finish the 2021 season on any team's 40-man roster after he was released by the Detroit Tigers in June. Mazara made his big-league debut at 20 years old in 2016, batting .266/.320/.419 with 20 home runs in 568 plate appearances in his rookie season. But the left-handed slugger never was able to break out and he posted below-average offensive numbers for the Texas Rangers before he was traded to the Chicago White Sox. He struggled with Chicago in 2020 before slashing just .212/.276/.321 in 181 plate appearances for Detroit last year. The 26-year-old represents a low-cost depth option for a Padres team with plenty of questions at the corner outfield spots.

Nomar Mazara Released By Tigers On Wednesday

Detroit Tigers outfielder Nomar Mazara was released on Wednesday and will become a free agent, the team announced on Twitter. Mazara had been looking for a bounce-back performance from a disappointing 2020 campaign, but he was not able to produce with Detroit as he slashed .212/.276/.321 with three home runs, 19 RBI and 12 runs scored in 50 games. After averaging almost 20 home runs a year through his first four seasons with Texas, Mazara's numbers have dropped off a cliff over the past two years. There could be any number of factors for this, but it is possible he could be dealing with lingering after effects of COVID-19, which he contracted during the 2020 season and did not appear to play at 100 percent after he came back last year. Any managers that had him rostered can safely drop him to the waiver wire now, and don't bother picking him up until he can show a significant turnaround wherever he lands.

Nomar Mazara DFA'd, Willi Castro Optioned Friday

In a series of roster moves on Friday, the Detroit Tigers designated outfielder Nomar Mazara for assignment and optioned infielder Willi Castro to Triple-A Toledo. Outfielder Derek Hill and infielder Isaac Paredes were called up from Toledo in corresponding roster moves. For Mazara, the 26-year-old hasn't been able to recapture his form since leaving Texas two years ago. Mazara averaged over 19 homers and 77 RBI with a .261 batting average in four seasons with the Rangers. In 50 games for the Tigers, Mazara posted three homers, 19 RBI, 12 runs scored and a .212/.276/.321 slash line. For Castro, the demotion comes as a disappointment due to his sleeper status entering 2021. The 24-year-old has six homers, 28 RBI, 34 runs scored and four stolen bases with a .214/.278/.341 line in 280 plate appearances this season compared to six homers, 24 RBI and 21 runs scored with a .349/.381/.550 line in 140 plate appearances in 2020. Both Hill and Paredes are in the starting lineup for Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins on Friday. Hill could have some value in AL-only leagues if he's able to build on his strong season at Triple-A.

Nomar Mazara Scratched On Saturday

Detroit Tigers outfielder Nomar Mazara (illness) has been scratched from Saturday's game against the Minnesota Twins. He is reportedly dealing with a non-COVID related illness and will sit this one out. Niko Goodrum will move into the outfield, while Zack Short plays shortstop against righty Bailey Ober. Neither player is a reliable streaming option despite having an above average matchup here. Both players have struggled with the bat and there should be better options available.

Nomar Mazara Has Enjoyed A Productive Last Few Weeks

Detroit Tigers outfielder Nomar Mazara has 11 hits in his last 42 plate appearances dating back to June 14. That's good for a .306 batting average. The 26-year-old has also collected four RBI, three extra-base hits and two runs scored during that span. It's a rather small sample size, but it's a positive sign for both the Tigers and fantasy managers that have Mazara on their roster. The outfielder is hitting just .213 on the season with a .283 on-base percentage and three home runs in 166 plate appearances. Given his overall struggles this year, Mazara is only a candidate to be rostered in deeper leagues. That being said, if he continues to hit like he has in the last few weeks, he might be worth a look for managers in desperate need of outfield reinforcements in shallow leagues.

Nomar Mazara Drives In Two Runs On Saturday

Detroit Tigers outfielder Nomar Mazara had a solid day at the plate in Saturday's 9-8 win over the Chicago Cubs. Mazara went 2-for-5 with a walk, a double, two RBI and a run. The double was his first of the year and this was his third multi-hit game of the season. Mazara is slashing .228/.302/.386 through 17 games on the year. He's been seeing regular playing time lately and has been typically hitting in or around the heart of the order. He can be left on waivers in all fantasy leagues at this point, but if he heats up, he'll be worth roster consideration in AL-only leagues and deep leagues.
