The New York Mets and Norichika Aoki agreed upon a free agent deal on Saturday. Aoki, recently released by the Toronto Blue Jays, is expected to join the Mets in time for the second game of their doubleheader today. The Mets needed to add outfield depth after trading Curtis Granderson and losing Michael Conforto to injury. Aoki has hit .274 with five home runs in 83 games with the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays.
Norichika Aoki Dealt To Blue Jays For Francisco Liriano
Norichika Aoki has been acquired by the Blue Jays for starter Francisco Liriano, per mlb.com. Aoki and minor leaguer Teoscar Hernandez have been packaged to bring long-time starter Liriano to Houston in a move that bolsters the Astros pitching depth. It will be interesting to see how Liriano will be used by the Astros, a starter whose ERA is 5.88 and has struggled with control issues his whole career. Aoki isn't a fantasy asset but a quality depth outfielder that is hitting .272 this season with 19 runs batted in through 202 at-bats. Liriano will most likely pitch in the bullpen and support Francis Martes with long relief duties and Aoki will slip right back into his role as a rotational outfielder for Toronto. The move, however, depreciates Liriano's fantasy stock even more than it already was.
Norichika Aoki's Strong June Provides Value Off Astros Bench
Norichika Aoki went 3-for-5 with two doubles in the Astros win on Thursday. Aoki has had a nice month to this point, hitting .326 through 43 at-bats in June. Aoki's role is to come off the bench and provide some strong at-bats as a rotational outfielder for Houston. His .348 slugging is all you need to know about Aoki's power potential and is best suited as a fourth outfielder. Aoki is hitting .329 in 79 at-bats on the road this season but Aoki has neither the potential or the playing time to be fantasy viable.
Houston Astros outfielder Norichika Aoki went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in the Astros' 12-6 loss to the Angels on Sunday. Aoki is now 7-for-20 in his last six starts with three runs batted. Aoki is hitting .269 this season with one home run and 11 runs batted in as the fourth Houston outfielder. Aoki lacks the power and the playing time to truly be considered a fantasy asset at this time.
Norichika Aoki Hits RBI Single As Astros Win 11th In a Row
Houston Astros outfielder Norichika Aoki singled off of Royals right-hander Ian Kennedy, driving in the first of seven Astros runs Monday night. Aoki came into the game with a career .426 batting average against Kennedy, and the RBI was his ninth of the season. Aoki is a key bench player for Houston but lacks the power and playing time to be considered a fantasy option in the outfield.
Houston Astros outfielder Norichika Aoki singled twice in the Astros' 7-6 win on Thursday. After hitting .300 in the month of April, this month has been a different story. In his last 17 games, he is 9-for-50 and is slashing .214/.277/.238 in the month of May. Aoki is a rotational player, at best, in the Astros outfield, but his dip in production has made him a non-factor in fantasy. He has been especially ineffective at home this season, hitting only .189 through 53 at-bats at Minute Maid Park.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Norichika Aoki is stuck in a 6-for-35 slump and has only one extra-base hit in his last 14 games played. Aoki sprinted out of the gates, spraying hits all over the field and was hitting .354 on April 26 before the offensive nosedive. He has especially struggled at home, hitting only .187 in 38 at-bats as opposed to .347 in 49 at-bats on the road. The Astros offense is clicking right now, and Aoki has been a contributor to their 29-12 record. But his offensive slide should certainly affect his playing time, making him a less than attractive option in fantasy.
